Topics for Oral Test for Grade 2010
Directions: You are allowed 5 minutes to prepare a conversation with your partner
about your chosen topic or the given situation from the following.

注:下面题目或情景中所提供的人名或地名均为虚拟,供同学们参考 。口试时
只要彼此能够围绕所选话题或情景顺利对话即可,完全没有必要背诵。

Topic 1: Travelling
Situation 1: Two friends are discussing their travel plans for the coming summer
vacation. One is eager to see beautiful natural scenery while the other is interested in
culture and history.
Role A: You’d like to go to a place like Jiuzhaigou Valley to appreciate the beauty of
nature, for you have lived in the city for too long and got tired of man-made
environment, and want to refresh yourself in a natural scenery,
Role B: You believe a visit to a place like Xi’an will enrich yourself with the
knowledge of the Chinese culture and history.

Topic 2: Means of Transportation
Situation 2: You and Tom are two tourists talking about the means of transportation
while you go around a city.
Role A: Tom thinks the taxi is on the top of the list. He can go directly from one place
to another without wasting much time on the road. It’s comfortable in a taxi, and he
can rest before reaching the destination.
Role B: You prefer buses and subways. They are much cheaper. Besides, you will
have more chances to communicate with local people and to learn about their culture.

Topic 3: Internet
Situation 3: You and your friend Milton are arguing about the Internet.
Role A: Milton believes that the Internet is playing a more and more important part in
the study and daily life, helping people know the world and get useful information
and enrich their knowledge, etc.
Role B: You have different opinions on the Internet, thinking that it has caused a lot
of problems like spending too much time chatting or playing games on it and
committing crimes with its help, etc.

Topic 4: Marriage
Situations 4: Two women classmates Mary and Jane meet for the time after their
graduation five years ago. They have just got married recently. Both are boasting
about their husbands. Mary holds that her husband is big, strong and handsome as
well as very athletic, because he can swim, ski, play football, cricket and rugby; while
Jane holds that her husband is not only very intelligent, as he can speak 6 languages
such as French, Spanish, Italian, German, Arabic and Japanese, but also very
considerate, because he does most of housework in the family such as cooking,
sewing, and ironing.

Topic 5: Meeting Old Friends
Situation 5: One of your former classmates Xu Yuan at junior middle school just
came back from his/her studies abroad. You are curious about his/her experiences
studying abroad.
Role A: Xu Yuan, the former classmate
Role B: Yourself

Topic 6: Health
Situation 6: Jordan knows the importance of health very well, but he is always busy
and can’t find time for exercise. Make a conversation between Jordan and the doctor.
Role A: Jordan
Role B: A doctor

Topic 7: Shopping
Situation 7: A woman customer wants to by a nice skirt, but she does not have
enough money on her. So she tries to talk the shopkeeper into having some discount
(打折) for her and manages to do so. The shopkeeper gives in by giving her a 20%
discount.
Role A: You’re the customer.
Role B: You’re the shop keeper.

Topic 8: Part-time Jobs
Situation 8: Nowadays more and more students are taking part in part-time jobs.
There are many reasons for this trend. Both A and B are discussing this phenomenon
in more detail, each trying to convince the other one.
Role A is all for the idea of taking part in part-time jobs and he /she puts forward the
advantages.
Role B thinks every coin has two sides and points out the disadvantages.

Topic 9: Going Abroad at an Early Age
Situation 9: Nowadays, going abroad is popular with Chinese. Many young parents
are sending their children (range from 7 years old to teens) abroad for study. Two
educators are arguing about it.
Role A: You agree with it, because you think it is good for the children to learn a
foreign language, and they can receive very good education there.
Role B: You disagree with it. You believe that China is very good at basic education;
a great number of foreign children cannot stand competition with Chinese ones who
receive basic education in China. And it is bad for their native culture cultivation, etc.

Topic 10: Should Dormitory Lights on Campus Be Off at 11 p.m.?
Situation 10: Lights in students’ dormitories are turned off at 11pm. There are two
students discussing this measure.
Role A: You agree with this idea, because you think it is beneficial for students to

Situation 13: With the fierce competition on the job market, students from domestic
universities or colleges begin to consider whether what they’ve learned can well serve
their future job-hunting.
Role A: You are a student majoring in ancient Chinese literature, and it seems that
what you’ve learned is of little practical value in society and that it cannot help you
find a decent job.
Role B: You are a business man with many years’ experience, who have a different
perspective on college education and encourage A to be more open-minded.

Topic 14: Text Generation Gap
Situation 14: You are on the phone talking with your father asking him to buy you a
notebook computer or a MP4 player. Your father has the money but he wants to make
sure what you use it for. Please make a dialogue with your father and try to persuade
him to buy you a MP4 player.
