Abstract
Don DeLillo is a famous contemporary post-modern novelist. He
has published more than ten long novels and three plays and a great
number of short stories and essays. His masterpiece long novel White
Noise is acclaimed as the classic masterpiece of American postmodern
literature. The novel not only demonstrates the effects of American
society and its mass media, consumer culture on thoughts, emotion and
psychology of American people, but also fully shows the conflicts
between human civilization and natural ecology in a postmodern society.
The thesis consists of four parts. In the first part, the paper provides
a brief introduction to the author Don Delillo and the book. The second
part describes the general survey of the development of ecocriticism and
the main viewpoints of ecocriticism. The third part is the main body of
the paper which is divided into two sections: an analysis of ecocriticism
from crisis of natural ecology and crisis of human spiritual ecology. By
describing the loss of nature and crisis of spirit, the concluding part
emphasizes White Noise embodying deep ecological thinking. The novel
White Noise is analyzed from the perspective of ecocriticism, which will
enhance our understanding of ecological culture in the twenty-first
century as well as the novel and its author.
