1. Please share with your group members your favorite athlete (at home /abroad).
Nowadays, star athletes have not only acquired fame but also made a lot of money. Do you
think star athletes really deserve what they get?
Faced with the situation that some star athletes receive both fame and great deal of money,
some people questioned that whether they deserve so much. Compared with those unpopular
athletes, the star athletes really own too much. Those athletes who are not known by public are also
training hard, or even hard, everyday. But they only offered with a low salary and we could nearly
say that their lives are hard because of lack of money. In this point, it seems unfair for these
unpopular athletes. But I don't think so. Those star athletes are all first-class athletes, they are all
the best in their own field. They have made their name and proved themselves through their
strength. I think they well deserve the fame and money.
While to us, people who usually only see the star athletes beating others and winning the final
champion, they seem not deserving such salary. However, I think that we should also consider how
competitive and harsh the modern arena has become and how much effort has all those stars have
put in to get their own affirmation of winning. The salary part of the star is handled by the coach
and it is determined simply by the standard of the player. Therefore, as long as the player is good
enough, he will be able to gain the salary he deserve in any clubs or teams. This is ensured by the
market force which will eventually drive the price to equilibrium.
We cannot deny that most income source of star athletes comes from advertisement and sponsors.
It comes along with fame. As long as they are well known, companies will come after them. The
issue here is two sided, we could not simply say that commercialization of sports is good or bad.
However, it really features what modern sports have become. By advertising, both the stars and
commercial organizations gains what they want. One gets money and one gets reputation.
In summary, we should understand that what the star athletes get is not determined simply by
themselves but a large amount of factors. It is the result of their own effort and their reputations
that dominate the amount of money they could get.
2. What’s your opinion about advertising? Can we live without ads? Why?
Advertisement can be a service to the customer. Some attractive utility or information of a
product can be delivered by the advertisements. In other words, the customer can know about the
products in advance through advertisements and be encouraged to buy them. Besides, some
advertisements of public good guide customers' behavior to benefit the society.
Some advertisements are not very useful to the customer. As we know, quite a few
advertisements overstate the advantages of the products or use sexy models who are actually not
related to the products in order to lure the customers. These untruthful advertisements are immoral
and harmful to consumers.
Today no one can avoid being influenced by advertisements. There are a variety of
advertisements spread by the media without which we can not live. So governments should
supervise the advertisements market so that customers' right can be guaranteed not to be infringed.
And on the other hand, the customers are supposed to learn more about how to identify and analyze
the fakes behind an advertisement.
3. What’s the purpose of holidays? And what do people do on holidays?
The traditional Chinese holidays are an essential part of Chinese culture. Many holidays are
associated with Chinese mythology and folklore tales, but more realistically, they probably
originated from ancient farmer rituals for celebrating harvests or prayer offerings.
Chinese traditional holidays are accumulations of thousands of years’ traditional culture. Each
holiday has its historical origin, wonderful legend, unique taste and deeply wide bases. Traditional
holidays reflect our nation's traditional custom, morality and religion, and are involved with the
whole nation’s desire for a better life and vision. They have very strong cohesion and inclusion. We
celebrate our traditional holidays to commemorate our forebears and to succeed splendid
civilization to some extent.
For instance, Spring Festival, As Spring Festival is still the most important festival in the year
for most people, it is usually a time for a holiday. Most of us go home to celebrate Spring Festival
with our families and we buy gifts for our friends and relatives. We Paste New Year’s pictures and
the spring couplets as well as pictures of Kitchen God, Door God and God of Wealth. Family
members spend their time together enjoying the happy time and preparing the New Year's Eve
dinner, regarded as the most important dinner in the year. Children are always happiest because
their lucky money and beautiful dressings. Many people would visit friends and relatives; some
may enjoy their travel plans, and the like.
4、What do you know about critical period theory? Do adults and children learn a language
differently or in the same way? Try to explain with examples there is a (isn’t any) critical
period for learning a skill.
The critical period is the time when animals and we human beings must learn something new.
This period refers to the only time the animals and human beings can learn a new skill and it is
more difficult for them to learn as they grow up. There was evidence that children can learn
language more easily and correctly than adults. For a person, it is much more difficult to learn a
new language as he grow up.
According to the theory, the reason that can be responsible for this phenomenon is that
adolescents experience may change as they grow up. They may get frustrated while learning a new
language because they can’t pronounce the sounds correctly. Humans must learn a second language
before the critical period in order to speak it with a native accent. Take one example, songbirds
have a critical period for learning to sing, they learn it by listening their parents’ song and repeated.
If we remove a new born songbird from its parents, we will find that it doesn’t sing any more. That
is, a songbird must learn to sing in the first few weeks or months after their life and an adult bird
can’t learn to sing. Another example, cats have a critical period for learning to use their eyes, if we
in their first few weeks after their life, if we remove a cat to a dim room for a period of time, it
won’t be able to use the eyes and when the cat become adult, it won’t see very well.

to our life? Then what problems could we have with watching TV?
Television plays an important part in our daily life,on the one hand, it provides us news both at
home and abroad. We can get to know many things happening around the world. It can also bring
us much pleasure. Programs of television make us relaxed and forget unhappy things.
Just as every coin has its two sides, On the other hand, it may have adverse effects on us as
well. If we spend a lot of time watching TV, the time we spend on our work and study will be less,
and the time we share with our family will be reduced accordingly, watching TV will also damage
our eyesight. Anyone who sits down and watches television with children can't be blamed for
worrying about the effects violent images may have on their children's developing minds. Cartoons
and live action shows, especially those intended for boys, regularly feature explosions, gunfights.
The study of the effects of television violence leads researchers to believe that children can be
