School of Chinese Language and Literature. My major is Chinese Literature. I chose this university
because I like my major and Guilin as well. I do want to stay in such a beautiful place. I love music,
dancing and traveling. My dream is to go abroad and teach foreign students Chinese language
and introduce Chinese cultures to them.

Unit 2 About CET-4

Model 1

Question 1: What does CET-4 refer to? (Do you know about CET-Band 4?)

Answer: CET-4 refers to College English Test Band Four,a standardized English examination for
college students in our country. It is held twice a year, in June and in December.

The test consists of six parts: writing, skimming and scanning, listening, reading in depth, cloze or
error correction, and translation.

Maybe a candidate will have to learn over 4,000 words, including more than 2,000 active words,
and have a large range of grammar. Besides, he/she has little trouble with listening and reading
comprehension. It is indeed a great challenge.

Question 2: Is it necessary for the students to pass CET-4? (What do you think of CET-Band 4)

Answer: Yes, I think so. CET-4 is one of the few national tests for undergraduates. If I fail it, it is
hard for me to get a B.A and assure my future employers of my English proficiency. So CET-4
qualification can contribute to finding a good job.

Question 3: Is it difficult to pass the examination?

Answer: It depends on how much effort you’ve made on it. I think both English foundations and
skills are of great importance to the test. So we’ll have to spend much time improving English in
our spare time, which will affect the performance of other subjects.

Model 2

Question : Could you please tell me something about the requirements of College

English?

Answer: Sure. College English is a required basic course for undergraduate students. It aims to
develop students’ ability to use English in a well-rounded way, especially in listening and speaking.
Maybe you’ll have to learn over 4,500 words, including more than 2,000 active words, and have
little trouble with listening, speaking, reading and writing. And the students are supposed to
understand news items read at a speed of about 130 words per minute.

Model 1

Question: Could you tell me something about your studies in this university? /What subjects do
you study at the university? ( your major, the subjects, the teachers, etc.)

Answer: I am taking law as my major in this university. I like it very much though some of my
classmates think it so boring to memorize so many things. A lot of factors contribute to my great
interest in this subject. First, I have a very good memory. I can keep the detailed items of law in
mind easily, from which I always gain a strong sense of achievement. And I can also put them into
use freely. Secondly, we should try to improve our law-and-order situation to build a country
under the rule of law. I am really happy to do my duties in building a stronger and more orderly
country by law. In our daily life, I can help the people solve their disputes and quarrels by law.
Thirdly, with the development of our country and the advance of the opening-up policy to the
world, lawyers are in great need. So what I learn from law will be of great help in landing a good
job. Luckily, my teachers are excellent. They are knowledgeable and patient. I can learn a lot from
them. But there is no shortcut to it. I think nothing is better like constant practice and I believe
perseverance will give me a good result. I believe I will be an excellent lawyer one day.

In the first two years, our time is tight. We have to take some courses. We need to attend classes
every day. My teachers assign us a paper every other week and a term paper at the end of a
semester and then we can get a full credit. I still need three more credits in the International Law;
maybe I’ll take it in this semester. After my core courses are finished, I’ll be doing independent
study. Studying in the university is quite different from that in high school. Autonomous learning
is emphasized very much. Under our teachers’ instructions, we will have to finfish all the subjects
by ourselves. Fortunately, I’ve managed to adapt myself to the change, so I enjoy my study and
life now.

Besides our major, English is compulsory for us. We take English in the first two school years and
we are required to pass CET-4 at the end of the second year. English is a useful language, so I’ve
decided to spend more time on it. A good command of English will help me a lot in being a good
lawyer.

Besides the required courses, we are required to take some other courses such as Chinese
Literature, English Literature, American Literature, Psychology, Public Relation, etc.

Model 2

Question 1: What subject do you like best? What made you like it: your personal interests, the
teacher, the practical applications of the course in future, etc.?

Answer: I like physics best, though many classmates find it hard. A lot of factors led

me to like this subject. As early as in high school, I was amazed at the laws scientists

like Newton and Einsten discovered. What they found out changed the world.

Luckily, my teachers are excellent. They are knowledgeable and patient. Just because of them, I’m
willing to spend lots of my spare time on this subject.

Most importantly, what I’ve learned from the physics course will be of great help in landing a
good job. Nowadays many companies think physics majors often have a solid academic
foundation and can easily adapt themselves to a wide variety of positions.

Question 2: What study habits seem to be common among successful students? (What do you
think are good study habits?)

Answer: Many top students seem to have these good study habits:

They tend to have a strong sense of time and organize their time well. They may draw up their
study plan well in advance. While studying, they check whether they are working ahead of
schedule or lagging behind it. They usually work in a systematic way. Before class, they preview
the text to get some idea about what the teacher is going to say and which part of the text is
difficult.

In class, they listen attentively, take notes of the main points of the lecture, and ask questions
when they don’t understand.

After class, they review what they have learned. By going through the text and the notes, they
can remember important information.

Unit 4 About Guangxi Normal University

----Our history and the present development

Model 1

Q: What are you proud of about your university?

A: I’m really very proud of her indeed. You know the university has a history of about 75 years. It
has produced thousands of teachers. It was one of the top ones at the national level for a while in
the early 20th century. It once had national famous professors then. So a solid foundation was
laid down for the ongoing further development. Thus we bred an excellent tradition for our
fellow students to drive to a bright future. Now our university owns a resourceful library. Most
books are on open shelves, so that we can get access to anything we need. The digital recourses
there are also very helpful. Besides, the teaching staff here are young and energetic. You know
the president of our university is a famous chemist with Doctor's degree, young and energetic,
too.

Both students and teachers are making joint efforts to achieve the common goal of standing
among the best provincial normal universities in China.
