“Who was Thomas Edison?” he asked. John thought for some time and then answered in a low
voice, “A singer from Germany?”
“No, Thomas Edison was a great American inventor.” Mr. Smith said. He was getting a little
angry now because everyone knows the great man., but he was trying not to let his students see
that. Then he asked again, “Who was the first president of the United State?” John thought for a
long time but he said nothing. “George Washington!” John turned back and began to walk towards

Read and Answer:
American people like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind to them.
People of many countries do so, too. It is a very good habit.
You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table , when someone
walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work
well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. “Excuse me” is another short
sentence they use. When you hear someone say “Excuse me” behind you, you know that
somebody wants to walk past you without touching you.
It’s not polite to break others when they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say
“Excuse me” first, and then begin talking. You should also do so when you want to cough or make
any noise before others.

In China, more and more middle school students are getting shorter sleeping time than before.
Most students sleep less than nine hours every night, because they have much homework to do.
Some homework is given by their teachers, and some by their parents. Also, some students don’t
know how to save time. They are not careful enough while they do their homework, so it takes
them a lot of time. Some students spend too much time watching TV or playing computer games.
They stay up very late. On weekends some students have to get up early every morning to school
on time. It can be a long way from home to school.
School and parents should cut down some of the homework so that our children can enjoy
more than nine hours of sleep every night for their health. For children, we should make best use

study and health.

Read and Answer:
In Canada and the United States, people often invite friends over for a meal, a party, or just for
conversation.
Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their home. “Would you
like to come over for dinner this Saturday night?”
“Hey, we’re having a dinner on Friday. Can you come?
To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept, or say you’re sorry and give an
excuse.
Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like invitations but they are not real
invitation, such as, “Please come over for a drink sometime.” or “Why don’t you come over and
see us sometime?” They are really polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real
invitations because they don’t mention a nice time or date. They just show that the person is trying
to be friendly. To reply to expressions like this, people just say, “Sure, that would be great!” “OK.”
or “Yes, thanks.”

do people often invite friends for in Canada and the United States?

Which is the best way to learn a language? We should remember that we all learn our language
well when we were children. If we could learn a second language in the same way, it wouldn’t
seem so difficult. Think of what a small child does. It listens to what people say and it learns to
say what it hears. When it wants something, it has to ask for it. It is using the language. If people
have to use a second language all the time, they will learn it quickly.
It is important to remember that we learn our own language by hearing people speak it and by
seeing what they write. We say what we hear at school though you learn to read and write as well
as to hear and speak. It is how to learn all the new words through the ears. Of course, you must
learn to read them, spell them and write them, too.

does a small child learn his own language?

is the best way to learn all the new words?

A week later the telephone rang to the police station, and somebody said, “You are looking for
Bill Grace, aren’t you?”
“Yes, can you tell us where he is now?”
“Well, he went to Waterbridge an hour ago.”
Waterbridge was a small town 180 kilometers away from the city. Four photos of the thief
were sent to the police in Waterbridge at once by the city police.

In America each student works as hard as possible in high school. If they don’t work hard enough,
they will not get good grades or even pass the exams. If they fail, they might not get into the
college they want. However, in high school, they have more time to do things than in college.
Many students take part in hobby groups. Other students go in for sports such as soccer, baseball
or basketball. Nearly all high schools have sports teams. Also, students usually get their first job
when they are in high school, though the jobs aren’t very good. For example, a lot of students
work at fast food restaurants. In American high schools, fashion seems very important. If they
don’t have the newest and coolest clothes as those children who certainly already have them, they
will not be called “cool”. So they will wear the newest and coolest clothes as others.

Questions:
do high school students work hard?
sports do high school students do?

seems very important in American high schools?
