Writing a good story is not an easy task. What’s the secret? Mo Yan, 2012’s Nobel Prize winner
in literature, believes his success comes from a large amount of reading.
Mo was born into a farming family in a village in Shandong Province. He grew up listening to
folk stories about gods, spirits and foxes. Those stories later
became the inspiration (灵感) for Mo’s writing.
Mo left school at the age of 12 and started to work in the fields. Although he was tired after his
daily hard work, Mo was always hungry for books. He read his

books. “When I finished reading all the books around, I thought I was the most knowledgeable man
in the world,”he said.
After Mo left his hometown and joined the army in 1976, he began to read widely, including
works by Lu Xun and many other famous writers. He learnt from these writers but did not copy them.
Instead, he developed his own style. As the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Prize in Literature,
Mo told a reporter,“I grew up in an environment filled with folk culture. It enters my novels

When I was about fifteen, I read Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham. At the time, I
was living in a small town in Western Colorado, where my father was a minister (牧师). My older
sister, Alice, had died in a car accident and I was trying to find the answer to that age-old
question:“Why do bad things happen to good people?”I don't remember now how I got my hands on
Of Human Bondage, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I believe it is Maugham's best work. It
tells the life story of Philip Carey and his search for meaning in life. After Carey's parents die, he is
sent to live with his aunt Louisa and uncle William Carey in a small village.
I still remember how I was mesmerized by it. I often read the book late into the night, thinking
about Philip as if he were a close friend. I often hurried home
after school to discover what was happening to him.
About one-third into the story, I took a pen and began underlining passages that spoke to me.
Even though the book came out in 1915, ten years before I was born, it describes me and my
feelings.

Bobsledding ( 雪橇运动) is a fast and exciting winter sport. A bobsled has a two-person team
or a four-person team and it goes at about 100 kilometers an hour. When a bobsled team goes down
the course, the other teams wait and watch. Then each team tries to go down faster than the others.
Each team can try several times. In the end, the fastest team wins the prize.
