第一节 (共 10 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 20 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the
homework load (工作量 ) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen
minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make
full use of time! Our class size is around 550, but joining in clubs, sports,
music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in
every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to
learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many
tests that I’ve prepared for the night before. I have gotten an A, and not
remembered anything later. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so
much more. Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a
choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more
useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools,
they’re also around in high schools. I have a lot of friends who promised they’d
never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun”
and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when
you’re applying for (申请) college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not
partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends
grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow their footsteps.
Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.
does the author think of high school?
A.
It requires hard work.
B.
There are very few activities.
C.
It’s hard to meet new people there.
D.
There isn’t enough time for homework.

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests.
But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very
different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do
whatever they want to. There are no teachers —only
behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children
want to learn anyway. do not need to say to a three-year-old, 'Go to
explore your environment.' You can't stop them!says Daniel Greenberg, a
founder of the school.
will lose all taste for learning.
At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint,
cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run
around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children
can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children
and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school
rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do
not want any more.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work.
But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college.
Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today.
One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they
know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in
Illinois, has studied these highly
anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when
they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources (资源) .
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have
developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers
spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college
students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked
the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming
second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12%
worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears
improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used
younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to
write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor
Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade
of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.

done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship
between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as
their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears
immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it
themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
may the students start worrying about before an exam?

There's been lots of concern recently about the potential dangers of microwave popcorn(爆
米花),but is this concern founded,or just overmuch fear-spreading? The answer is that many
of the chemicals that caused worry in earlier decades have been removed from microwave
popcorn, but some critics still are not satisfied.
"You may consider popcorn to be a low-calorie,high-fiber snack, but microwave popcorn
isn't a healthy choice, explains nutrition expert Dan DeFigio. That's because microwave
popcorn bags were coated with perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) to prevent oil substance from
leaking particular type of PFC, known as perfluorooctanoic acid ( PFOA),has been
linked to certain cancers, but the American Cancer Society says the evidence is unsure and more
research is being done about this.
Nevertheless, in response to concerns about PFCs,the and Drug Administration
(FDA) worked with popcorn makers back in 2011 to remove PFOA from their
more PFCs were banned in the next five years. So today's microwave popcorn
doesn't have these
chemicals, but critics say that the alternatives could cause problems as the old ones, but less is
known about them.

That's not the only problem, chemical that for decades lent buttery
deliciousness to popcom has also been connected in rare cases with major lung
as diacetyl(二乙酰),it's long been a documented problem with workers in popcorn making
facilities, but also can be risky for people who just eat the snack a lot. A 2007 study published in
the journal Critical Reviews found that more than 80 percent of chemical release happened when
the bag was opened post- popping. Although diacetyl has been removed from most
products, some critics claim that the alternative to diacetyl is also harmful.
Most of the exposure(接触)to diacetyl came from inbreathing rather than eating popcorn.
Therefore, experts recommend at least waiting for the bag to cool before you open it to reduce
potentially harmful chemical exposure. Better yet, make your own fresh at home with an air
popper. If you like to flavor it, add organic butter or some cheese.
28. What can we know about PFOA from the text?

does the last paragraph intend to tell us?

a byproduct of other chemical breakdowns and sends out a orodor as the

2-nonenal was the only odor compound whose presence became stronger with age.
In the study, in which 22 people aged between 26 and 75 were asked to wear

of 2-nonenal was three times as much in the oldest subjects as it was in the middle-aged group.
The youngest members of the study produced the least amount of 2-nonenal. Researchers

After 7 long years since the cute cat named Chebon went missing, there was little hope that it

his little friend again until he received a life- changing call. Clearly, a kind stranger reached out to
tell him that his beloved cat was safe and sound and couldn’t wait to see him again!
The cat went missing years ago, right before Robert was planning on moving from California
to Ohio. The sad owner decided to give up his plans and stayed in California for the whole year
looking for his missing friend, but in vain. “I remember at one point I was praying and I said, ‘God,
I’ll do anything, just bring my Chebon back…’”, Robert said in a video posted on the Ventura
County Animal Services. The cat seemed to have disappeared forever and Robert had no other
choice than to move on.
Then 7 years later, a woman noticed a cat that looked ill, so she decided to catch the animal
and take him to the vet (兽医). Luckily, the cat she found had a microchip (微型芯片), and in an
instant, they knew who the owner of the 19-year-old cat was. That’s when Robert received a call
saying that his cat was alive.
“I was afraid there was some kind of mistake,” Robert said in the reunion video. The man
decided to ride on a plane and fly all the way from Los Angeles to see his old friend. After finally
seeing the cat, Robert immediately recognized his cat and burst into tears. After all these years, the
two friends were back together. The touching moment was recorded by the animal shelter and was

Binge-watching (追剧) your favorite TV series is bad for your brain. Dr. Randall Wright,
based in Texas, said the need to watch episode (集) after episode has a similar influence on the
brain to gambling (赌博). What’s more, it often leads to social loneliness, snacking on junk food
and a shortage of exercise and sleep, which, over time, is bad for the brain.
When you let auto play start the next episode, you can find out what happens next and your
brain receives good feedback, Dr. Wright wrote in an article. This right-away satisfaction is similar

to gambling where even after a win, you are not satisfied and want to continue playing. With
binge-watching, you are not satisfied with stopping after episode five and want to continue
watching. This cycle coupled with the snacking and the long time sitting can lead to unhealthy
changes in your brain and body over time.
Dr. Wright said, “Binge-watching itself is not bad. It becomes problematic when you are
watching a third, fourth or fifth episode instead of doing healthy activities.” But he said it is
possible to avoid the bad influence of binge-watching with four tips, including staying away from
salty, fatty, calorific foods, exercising before a binge-watching, setting an alarm for sleep and
balancing TV viewing with socializing.
If you add these tips to your binge-watching practice, you can create lasting healthy habits
and still enjoy the now-and- then binge-watching time without hurting your brain.
29. What might “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Gambling. B. Binge-watching. C. TV series. D. Brain.
30. In what way is binge-watching like gambling?
A. The long time sitting. B. The changes of feeling.
C. The snacking on junk food. D. The immediate satisfaction.
31. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The tips on how to develop a healthy lifestyle.
B. The reasons why binge-watching is problematic.
C. The ways to keep away from binge-watching.
D. Do’s and don’ts of binge-watching.
32. What may be the best title of the passage?
A. Ill Health: The Result of Addiction
B. Healthy Habits: A Must of A Better Life
C. Binge-watching: A Killer of Your Brain
D. TV-Viewing: Gradual Harm on Your Health

“Now what?” asked Mr. Rojas. “Let’s play cards!” answered Mrs. Rojas. At 8:30 Mr. and Mrs.
Rojas started to play cards. They were playing for about 10 minutes when Mr. Rojas looked out

When Emma first announced about a month ago that she wanted to cut off all her hair, I cried.
Not in front of her, of course. In front of her ,1 asked why and then told her to find a picture on the
Internet that she could show to a hairdresser.
And then I went to the shower and cried. I cried not because she wanted to cut her long hair,
but because she wanted to “cut it all off like a boy”. For some reason, that was the straw (稻
草)that broke the dam.
Emma hasn’t worn dresses since she was two. She hates them. Now, at ten, she’s usually

wearing mesh(网状)shorts and a packers T-shirt or jersey(运动衫)一or something old and stained
and acquired for free. When she’s “dressing up” she wears skinny jeans and a plaid(格子图案
的)button-down with her black and green Converse high-tops.
I admit her fashion sense has always made me a little sad. When I found out I was having a
girl, I ran home and painted the nursery two shades of pink while fantasies of girls’ weekends and
shopping trips were dancing in my head .I’d teach her how to do her hair and paint her nails. I
couldn’t wait to start the journey with my very own mini- me. But it turns out you don’t give birth
to dolls, and instead of a mini-me. I got a completely separate and independent human being with
ideas and dreams of her own. And yes, that made me a little sad.
It also makes me extremely proud, although I’ve fought hard against the label tomboy(假小子).
I’ve always been in the pride of my daughter’s strong sense of self and amazed at how early it
developed. She has been refusing dresses since before she could speak!”
24. What was the writer’s straw that broke the dam?

C. Emma’s spending on clothes.
D. Emma’s changing tastes on fashions.
26. How does the writer feel about Emma’s fashion sense?
A. Sorrowful. B. Angry. C. Happy. D. Proud.
27. Which can best describe Emma’s character?

that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.
At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be
determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food
is the best in the town!
We ended up writing our IOU's with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of
work in a variety of ways if he needs it.
I think the idea isn't that the trade is so much as the importance of the kind of
transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals
we ate.
We don't buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don't give gifts at all in fact.
The holiday time is spent enjoying each other's company and doing things together with family
and friends. This is what seems most sensible.
Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.
28. Ilan did not take any money that day in order to_________.
A. have a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip
B. buy nothing that day to save some money
C. make people aware of their over spending
D. trade for something of equal value in return
29. For the meal, the author finally offered Ilan ________.
A. some promises B. a book
C. some paintings D. work in different ways
