Asia’s mountain glaciers (
冰川
) will lose at least a third of their mass through global
warming by the century’s end, with serious consequences for millions of people who rely on them for fresh
water, researchers have said. The high mountains of Asia consist of a geographical region surrounding the
Tibetan Plateau, holding the biggest store of frozen water outside the poles. It feeds many of the world’s
great rivers, including the Ganges, the Indus and the Yarlung Zangbo River, on which hundreds of millions
of people depend.
Nearly 200 nations adopted the Paris Agreement in 2015, which sets the goal of limiting warming to a
B

In addition to
B

being held
level of “well below” 2°C, while “pursuing efforts” to achieve a lower ceiling of 1.5°C

Earth’s surface has
already warmed by about 1°C, according to scientists.
The Asian high mountains, the new study said, were already warming more rapidly than the global
average. A global temperature rise of 1.5°C would mean an average increase in the region of about 2.1°C,
with differences between mountain ranges - all of which will warm by more than 1.5°C

The Hindu Kush
mountain range would warm by about 2.3°C and the eastern Himalaya Mountains by 1.9°C, the study
forecast.
“Even if temperatures stabilize at their current level, (glacier) mass loss will continue for decades to
come,” the researchers added. “For the high mountain glaciers to survive, it is vital to reduce the global
temperature increase to the lowest possible level.”
A study in July in the journal Nature Climate Change said there was only a 5% chance of holding
global warming under 2°C

For 1.5°C, the chance was about 1%. On current trends, some experts project
Earth is on track to warm by about 3°C

D

It is near the lower ceiling that the Paris Agreement demands.
3

A

Hold global warming under 2°C

B

Try to save water as much as we can.
C

Keep global temperature increase to a minimum.
D

Make the global temperature stable at its current level.

Relieving poverty has been one of our government’s top concerns for the past decades.
Poverty(
贫困
) in remote areas in China is virtually a great obstacle for the Chinese to get common progress;
thus, it is urgent for us to help the people there to shake off poverty the sooner the better. For this aim, the
government has already sent technicians and experts to poverty-stricken areas to help boost local
agricultural production and teach the locals new techniques. The Ministry of Labor has also trained many
rural laborers through different programs. But all these are not enough. Several other ways have been
proposed as follows.
First of all, the government should encourage a small part of the people in the remote areas to get
wealthy ahead of others by equipping them with relevant funds and agricultural technology. These
“better-offs” can not only set a good example but give confidence to the poorer in their efforts to get rid of
poverty. When all the people get rich, the general level of living standard can be greatly improved. With
their living standard improved, they can attach greater importance to environmental protection and are
willing to input considerable amount of money to educate their children. Only in this way is a sustainable
development guaranteed.
Secondly, we must call upon people in all walks of life throughout the country, especially those wealthy
citizens in coastal areas to help those struggling below poverty line in poor remote regions out. We must
realize that only after all Chinese people live a comfortable life can we be peacefully enjoying material
prosperity in life. Helps can come in various forms----donating money to the poor family and books to
school drop-outs, college graduates volunteering to work in the most needed regions, bringing knowledge to
them, etc.
The last but not the least, the government should raise the rate of tax on the rich. This can shorten the
gap between the poor and the rich as well as benefit the country’s revenues(
财政收入
) whose better part is
in turn allocated to the poor remote areas.
Admittedly, it is never easy to cast off the shadow of poverty in the remote areas completely in the
short run. But every one of us should go all out to help those in poverty, we are confident that our country
will be more powerful and prosperous in the process of relieving poverty.

The concept of a working holiday is fairly simple

It is a vacation which normally lasts for
several weeks or even months

during which you divide your time between work and recreation

The typical
working holiday includes some manual labor and sightseeing

You can usually get room and board in
exchange for a few hours of work

For instance

Australia and New Zealand encourage working holidays by
offering one-year visas to people between the ages of 18 and 30

Countries all over the world offer the
chances to work or volunteer and live in a new environment

All you need is a return ticket and enough
cash to live on

While some people choose to work in restaurants or hotels

others may do fruit picking which is
perhaps the most popular type of work

Be prepared for long working days in the orchard

which may last
up to ten hours a day

If you are not ready for this

a more leisurely job with shorter hours is possible

but
you will not make as much money

Another option is volunteering in foreign countries

For example

you
can work with disabled children in Bolivia and practice your Spanish

research dolphins and whales in
Italy

or build schools in rural towns in Ghana

A working holiday is a great way to broaden your horizons since it gives you the chance to explore a
country

practice a new language

and meet people from all over the world

These kinds of adventures
sometimes have a really big impact on those who have experienced a working holiday

They often say that it
was one of the best memories of their lives

Be aware! Even though some working vacation programs pay

not all of them do sometimes you end up paying to go on working vacation

However

a working holiday
can get you off the beaten track and into spots the average tour bus would never go near.
1

What can you get in exchange for a few hours of work?
A

Recreation and money

B

A return ticket

C

Free transportation

D

Meals and shelter

2

What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A

The idea of a working holiday

B

Ways to spend a working holiday

C

Great places for a working holiday

D

Volunteering in foreign countries

3

What does “the beaten track” in the third paragraph refer to?
A

Roads in poor condition

B

Broken railway tracks

C

Routes taken by many tourists

D

Spots where you might get beaten

4

What does the writer remind readers to do in the last paragraph?
A

Check what you must pay for

B

Meet proper people

C

Be prepared for adventures

D

Broaden your horizons

Whizzfizzing Festival
As one of the Home Counties to the north and west of London, Buchinghamshire is known for the
rolling Chiltern Hills, its pretty villages, and the much-loved children’s author Roald Dahl.
The writer who penned Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Matilda and The Big
Friendly Giant is the inspiration for the Whizzfizzing Festival, which will transform the market-town of
Aylesbury into all kinds of music, color and fun on Saturday, 1 July.
Formerly known as The Roald Dahl Festival, this year’s event will involve a broad range of children’s
films and bring to life some of their best-loved characters — from Alice in Wonderland and Gruffalo to The
Big Friendly Giant and Harry Potter.
Things to See and Do
The festivals start at 11 a.m. with a colorful children’s parade. More than 650 local school children and
teachers, many in fancy dress, will march through the town carrying giant carnival puppets(
木偶
), with
thousands of audiences lining the street to watch.
The parade will be followed by a range of child- friendly activities and workshops held in venues across
the town.
Don’t be late for the Mad Hatters Tea Party in the Bucks County Museum, catch a splendid screening
of a Roald Dahl film in the Old Court House, watch leading children’s authors, including Julian Clary, and
read in the Market Square.
CBeebies’ children’s chef Katy Ashworth will once again cook up a storm with her interactive
Concoction Kitchen, located outside Hale Leys Shopping Centre. Little chefs will have lots of opportunities
to get involved in preparing, cooking — and best of all, tasting — Katy’s wonderful dishes.
With hands-on arts and crafts workshops, storytelling sessions, live music, a fancy dress competition,
street theatre and more, there is something for everyone.

Three Boys and a Dad
Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother. Expecting a whole day to relax, he
was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in
months. “This will be like a walk in the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids, and you can go
visit your mom.”
Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike, Randy, and
Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” Brad realized his
newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.
Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself
in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean
socks, although they were before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of
orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started.
By ten o’clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread
and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils.
Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that
he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realized that the talk show was over
and reading would be impossible.
At exactly1117, Brad called the daycare centre (日托所). “I suddenly have to go into work and my
wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes? ” The answer was obviously “yes” because
Brad was smiling.

59. This text is developed _________.

Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty.
In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were when they were
eighteen years old.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New
York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of
twenty-two and twenty-five. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached
their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people
least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.
The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers say they do
not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow
more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time
thinking about bad experiences.
The researchers considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being
single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related
to age.
The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However,
women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.
63. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The older a person is, the more stressed he feels.
B. The more lighthearted a person is, the happier he is.
C. The older a person is, the more clever he grows.
D. The older a person is, the happier he grows.
64. We can learn from the research that _________.
A. only when people get older, will they feel happier
B. older people usually have no worries in their life
C. stress levels among the youngest are the highest of all
D. older people are more likely to be thankful in life
65. According to the researchers, what is probably the reason why people grow happier when they get
older?
A. When people get older, they can’t remember bad experiences.
B. When people get older, they have no young children to care about.
C. When people get older, they learn to adjust their feelings.
D. When people get older, they don’t care about their feelings.
66. What do you think the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is?
A. A Gallup organization. B. A popular science magazine.
C. A university in New York. D. A research institution
67. What would the writer probably deal with in next paragraph?
A. Advice to the young people on how to keep happy.
B. Advice to the old people on how to live longer.
C. Why women at all ages are more sad, stressed and worried.
D. Why people will grow happier with their ages.
D
If you're like a lot of married guys, you don't need to be reminded about men being from Mars or
women from Venus. Chances are that you're all too familiar with the feeling that you and your wife are
from different worlds. The way to have a successful marriage is through communication, common ground
and understanding. Here are some pointers to guide you in the right direction.
Pointer 1. Realize nobody can wave a magic wand to make you and your wife completely understand
each other all the time. Accept the difference.
Pointer 2. Rather than ending up in an endless back and forth, forget about the issue for a minute.
Instead, think about how you feel she's acting toward you and ask her if that's how she feels about you.
Switching the focus to that shared feeling can help your wife see things from your point of view.
Pointer 3. Rather than feel offended if you find out she's not as into your favorite hobby as you
thought, appreciate the effort she put into making you happy. Swallow your pride and try to take part in
some of her hobbies, too, even if you might be a little put off at first. While you're not going to be trying on
makeup with her, you could try baking a recipe together.
Pointer 4. If either of you is always giving everything and getting nothing in return, there's going to
be bitterness. The best marriages are built on compromise. You knew you were going to have to give and
take for your marriage to work; now it's time to make it happen.
68. The best subtitle of Pointer 3 is ________.
A. Find out her hobbies B. Swallow your pride (at least sometimes)
C. Don’t get offended D. Try to make up
69. According to the last paragraph, it’s important for the husband and wife to__________.
A. give and take
C. live and let live

B. get everything and return nothing
D. forgive and forget

70. Which of the following is NOT good for keeping a successful marriage?
A. Try to understand each other all the way.
B. Don't play the blame game.
C. Focus on the feeling to get past the disagreement.
D. She won't always understand you (but that's O).

We went out to dinner tonight to celebrate my daughter's beautiful concert. We don't do this
often because of our tight budget.
I noticed a very tired mom in some kind of uniform come in with her three children, maybe
about age 4 or 5. She looked like she had just finished work. She sat with them quietly taking
care of all their needs. Then I noticed, as soon as their finally food arrived, she took a bite
of her food and then one of the kids had to go to the bathroom. They all left the table and she
ushered them — so lovingly — especially after what may have been a long day at work.
I excused myself from the table and went quietly to hostess stand. I handed the hostess $$15
and said, “Can you put this anonymously to that mom of 3’s bill? I am hoping it covered at
least the children’s meals.” The hostess had such a lovely smile and enthusiasm for being in
on this intention. I didn't stand around long as I didn’t want anyone — even my own family
— to know what was going on. I wanted it to be completely anonymous.
For the rest of my meal I did all I could not to put any more attention directly on the table,
as I didn't want her to suspect me in the act.
I thought about not sharing this story, but I feel like we are stealth, fierce — each others
candle holders and lighters-- in our commitments to kindness, so it feels like I should share
with you. Thanks for reading and thanks for all you do to inspire my heart to expand in greater
kindness and commitment to more and more random acts of kindness. It feels so wonderful to live
in this type of world, one of abundance and kindness, instead of lack and self-service.

With the holiday season well underway, it’s as good a time as ever to understand how your
brain functions when driving on those long car trips.
Being tired or distracted while driving accounts for 20 and 25 percent of road crashes,
with tired drivers even more likely to undergo distracting behaviors. Driving while tired can
be just as bad as driving drunk.
But what is it exactly that makes our brains so bad at staying focused on the road when we’re
exhausted?
“When we get sleepy and we are performing a dull task such as driving, we tend to look for
other things that increase our alertness,” said Chris Watling. “Studies have shown sleepy
drivers undertake more distracting-type behaviors to increase their levels of alertness such
as gazing at passing scenery and speeding to increase their focus on the task of driving.”
But it’s not only that — it is likely that some tired drivers might also reach for their
phones when driving to increase their alertness — an obvious issue when you’re supposed to
be keeping your eye on the road.
“These behaviors were found to be more prevalent when driving long distance, which at the
same time are increasing levels of sleepiness due to the time-on-task effect,” says Watling.
“Sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind but young people’s sleep is often
compromised by social activities, work or educational commitments,” he says. “Given young
drivers are over-represented in crash statistics and more likely to be impaired by sleepiness
and distraction, it is vital that we look at ways to reduce these behaviors and our focus should
be on young drivers. That said no driver is immune to sleepiness and sleepiness is a state that
most, if not all drivers on our road has experienced, and is habitually exposed to.”
But until we finally all have self- driving cars to drive us wherever we need, are there
any solutions to keep yourself occupied?
28. Why do tired drivers seem to be more distracted?
A. They look for ways to keep themselves awake.
B. They are attracted by the passing scenery.
C. They try other things to be excited at driving.
D. They make efforts to focus on speeding up.
29. What does the underlined word “prevalent” mean?
A. Strange. B. Common. C. Admirable. D. Social.
30. Which statement may Watling agree to?
A. Young drivers are more energetic in driving.
B. Young drivers are less distracted while driving.
C. Young drivers are more exposed to be sleepy.
D. Young drivers are immune to sleepiness.
31. What will be discussed if the text continues?
A. The difficulty of driving in a long trip. B. The signs of sleepiness in driving.
C. The future of self-driving cars. D. The ways of being alert while driving.
D
Attempting to open very old books and records without damaging them can be difficult, but
scientists in Switzerland say they have improved a method to read age-old documents without even
touching them.
Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are using radiation, in the form
of x-rays, to create images of the documents. This method is called -ray computed tomography
or -Ray tomography.
On a recent day, the researchers used -ray tomography to read from a small 14th century
document. Giorgio Margaritondo is working on the project. Reading from the document, he noted,
“in the year 1351, a young lady from Venice...wrote a testament, and then the testament was
sealed, and remained sealed for all these many centuries.”
Italian officials are planning to use -Ray tomography to build an open digital system in
the State Archives of Venice. Margaritondo says, “What you find inside the Archives are not
only small documents. But most of the items are huge volumes the size of a table, and so we must
be able in the future to look inside them.”
Many of the documents show signs of weathering, and are easily broken. Fauzia Albertin is
also working on the project. She says, “We need a technique to read inside them. Thanks to the
use for thousands of years of iron-based inks we can read them using -rays.”
Albertin is also with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The researchers have a lot
of work to keep them busy. The State Archives of Venice has a huge number of records. They were
produced over a period of about 1,000 years. The documents cover about 80 kilometers of shelf
space.
32. What writing method does the third paragraph use?
A. Description. B. Giving examples.
C. Comparison. C. Listing figures.
33. What plays important role in reading old documents?
A. The suitable weather. B. The sizes of the documents.
C. The ancient writing tools. D. The years of the old books.
34. What's the passage mainly about?
A. Attempting to open very old books with new technology.
B. The value of the old documents hidden many years ago.
C. Scientists have made important improvements.
D. All old documents can be opened by high- tech.
may the passage be taken from?
A. A transport magazine. B. A travel journal.
C. A science report. D. A physics textbook.

The Children’s Book-Show Competition is a chance for young readers to be writers.
Reading, it seems, is coming back in fashion, if a survey by the famous National Literacy Trust (the
NLT) is true. It shows that the percentage of children who admit enjoying reading has grown for the first
time in the past 8 years.
So it’s a good time to launch a competition that includes a shed-load of new books for schools as
prizes. The Children’s Book-show Competition, backed by The Independent, is taking to the roads again
from the start of next term, with a nation-wide tour of 15 big cities, featuring a line-up of a dozen children’s
writers and illustrators (插图画家) aiming to persuade pupils to follow their footsteps.
The competition, launched by the children’s writer and illustrator Jessica Souhami, has two
categories the under-nine’s and nine to 13-year-olds.
Children are asked to choose their favorite fairy or folk tale and set it in an extraordinary place.
Then they are to retell it with the aid of drawings and writings-whether it is set at sea, on a distant
planet, in the future or in the past. The closing date for the competition is 30th November.
“Tell your tale in pictures and in words, ”say the organizers of the competition. “It can be in a picture
book or comic-book format.”
The winner of each competition will receive a signed copy of a book by each of the 12 authors
involved in this year’s tour, plus ?150 worth of books for their school. The runners- up will receive a signed
copy of Souhami’s new book.
41. What can we know about the Book-show Competition? _____

Things Your Pilot Won't Tell You
You may not be getting the airline you paid for.
You may go to an airline website and buy a ticket, and get onto an airplane that has a similar name
painted on it, but half the time, you're really on a regional airline. The regionals aren't held to the same
safety standards as the majors their pilots aren't required to have as much training and experience, and the
public doesn't know that.
—Captain at a major airline
If you're a nervous flier, book a morning flight.
The heating of the ground later causes bumpier (颠簸的) air, and it's much more likely to
thunderstorm in the afternoon.
—Jerry Johnson , pilot, Los Angeles
The smoothest place to sit is often over or near the wing.
The bumpiest place to sit is in the back.If you're in the middle, you don't move as much.
—Patrick Smith, pilot, and author of Cockpit Confidential
Sit in the front if you want fresher air.
The general flow of air in any airplane is from front to back.So if you're really concerned about
breathing the freshest possible air or not getting too hot, sit as close to the front as you can.Planes are
generally warmest in the back.
—Tech pilot at a regional airline, Texas
You never know where the safest seat is.
There is no safest place to sit.In one accident, the people in the back are dead; in the next, it's the
people up front.
—John Nance, aviation safety analyst and retired airline captain, Seattle
I've been struck by lightning twice.
Most pilots have experienced it.Airplanes are built to take it.You hear a big boom and see a big flash
and that's it.You're not going to fall out of the sky.
—Charlotte, pilot for a regional earner,.North Carolina
People don't understand why they can't use their cell phones.
Well, what can happen is 12 people will decide to call someone just before landing, and I can get a false
reading on my instruments saying that we are higher than we really are.
—Jim Tilmon, retired American Airlines pilot, Phoenix

Look carefully and you’ll find musicians at the top of almost any industry. The television broadcaster
Paula ahn( cello) and the NBC chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd (French horn) attended
college on music scholarships; Both Microsoft’s Mr. Allen and the venture capitalist Rogar McNamee have
rock bands. Lorry Page, a co-founder of Google, played saxophone in high school. The former World Bank
president James D. Wolfensohn has played cello at Carnegie Hall.
The connection isn’t a coincidence. I know because I asked. I put the question to top-flight
professionals in industries from tech to finance to media, all of whom had serious ( if often little-known)
past lives as musicians. Almost all made a connection between their music training and their professional
achievements.[]
Will your school music program turn your kid into a Paul Allen, the billionaire co-founder of
Microsoft (guitar)? Or a Woody Allen (clarinet ) ?Probably not. These are outstanding achievers. But the
way these and other visionaries (有远见的人) I spoke to process music is interesting.
But the key question is why does that connection exist? Paul Allen offers an answer. He says music
“establish your confidence in the ability to create.” He began playing the violin at age 7 and switched to the
guitar as a teenager. Even in the early days of Microsoft, he would pick up his guitar at the end of marathon
days of programming. The music was the emotional analog (类比) to his day job, both of them show his
different creativity. He says, “something is pushing you to look beyond what currently exists and express
yourself in a new way.”
For many of the high achievers I spoke with, music functions as a “hidden language,” as Mr.
Wolfensohn calls it, one that enhances the ability to connect different or even opposite ideas. When he ran
the World Band, Mr. Wolfensohn traveled to more than 100 countries, often taking in local performances
(and occasionally joining in on a borrowed cello), which helped him understand “the culture of people”.
Consider the qualities these high achievers say music has sharpened cooperation, creativity,
discipline and the capacity to coordinate (协调) conflicting ideas. All are qualities obviously absent from
public life. Music may not make you a genius, or rich, or even a better person. But it helps train you to
think differently, to process different points of views --- and most important, to take pleasure in listening.
50. The reason why the author quote so many outstanding people as examples in the first paragraph is
___________.
A. to prove the popularity and the charm of music
B. to prove all winners are musicians before
C. to encourage kids to choose school music program
D. to prove the connection between success and music
51. What question did the author put to top-flight professionals?
A. Are success related to music or not?
B. Why do you choose music training?
C. What’s the benefit of learning music?
D. Why do you give up the career as a musician?
52. Which of the following is true?
A. Everybody knows those well-known people are musicians before.
B. Musicians exist in all industries.
C. Music can certainly make you become a better person.
D. Music helps Mr. Wolfensohn have a better understanding of the different culture.
53. The main idea of this passage is that ____________.
A. many musicians are found at the top of almost any industry
B. music plays an important role in achieving success
C. music can provide a new way to express yourself
D. music is an absolute necessity for everyone
54. The author develops the passage mainly _________.
A. by classification B. by comparison C. by example

D
The end of my sophomore year was approaching. Mom called me at the dorm one evening during the
last week of May. My summer break would be spent with grandma and grandpa, helping out around their
farm. The arrangement made good sense to all the family. I wasn’t fully convinced of that myself but
guessed it was just one summer. Next year would be my little brother’s turn.
I arrived late that afternoon. Grandma had fixed more food than the three of us could possibly eat. She
loved me entirely too much. The next morning, Grandpa fixed breakfast for the two of us. He told me
Grandma had tired herself out yesterday and was going to rest in bed a little longer. I made a mental note
to myself to not ask her to do things for me while I was there. I was there to help, not be a burden.
Weeks passed. I gradually settled into a routine of daily work with Grandpa. In the evenings I usually
read or talked with Grandma. She never grew tired of hearing about college or anything I was involved in.
She told me stories about her childhood, family and the early years after she and Grandpa had married.
D. by process
The last Saturday in June, Grandpa suggested going fishing. We hadn’t expected what we saw when
we got to the pond that morning One of the swans was dead. Grandpa had given the pair of swans to
Grandma on their 50th anniversary. “Why don’t we see about buying another one,” I suggested, hoping the
situation could somehow be righted. Grandpa thought for a few moments before answering.
He finally said, “no. . . it’s not that easy, Bruce. You see, swans mate for life. ” He raised his finger to
point, holding the fishing pole in his other hand. “There’s nothing we can do for the one that’s left. He has
to work it out for himself. ”
A few days later, we drove by the pond while doing our morning check on the cows. We found the
other swan lying near the same spot we had found the first one. It, too, was dead.
The month of July started with me and Grandpa putting up a new stretch of fence. Then July 12
came. That was the day Grandma passed away. Grandma had died suddenly that morning of a stroke. By
the afternoon, my parents were there. The old house was soon crowded with relatives and Grandpa’s
friends.
The funeral was held the next day. Grandpa had insisted on having it as soon as possible. On the
second day after the funeral, Grandpa announced at the breakfast table, “This is a working farm. We have
a lot of things to do. The rest of you should get back to your own lives. ” Most of the family had already left,
but this was Grandpa’s way of telling the rest it was time for them to go home. My parents were the last to
leave after lunch.
Grandpa was not a man who could outwardly express his grief around others, and we all worried
about him. The rest of the summer flowed by. We stayed busy working. I thought there was something
different about Grandpa but couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
September was nearing, and part of me did not want to leave. I thought of skipping the fall semester
and staying around a few more months. When I mentioned it, grandpa quickly told me that my place was
back at college.
The day finally came for me to pack my car and leave. I shook his hand and chanced a hug. As I drove
down the driveway, I saw him in the rearview mirror. He waved to me and then walked to the pasture gate
to start the morning livestock check.
Mom called me at school on a stormy October day to tell me Grandpa had died. A neighbor had
stopped by that morning for coffee and found him in the kitchen. He died of a stroke, the same as Grandma.
At that moment, I understood what he’d clumsily tried to explain to me about the swan on that morning we
fished together by the pond.
55. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that .
A. the brothers took turns to attend their grandparents
