第二部分:阅读理解 (10*3)
Passage 1
What is making this man's wallet so fat? Is it money? You might think so, for the man takes his wallet
out when he buys things he wants and needs. But the man doesn't pay cash when he buys something. He has
credit cards, which he uses in place of money.
Like many other people today, this man buys on credit. This means that some stores and businesses are
willing to let him have their goods or services now and pay for them later. At each of these stores he has a
charge account. People charge when they don't have the money to buy all at once or when they don't want to
carry a lot of money.
Charge accounts are of two main kinds. With a regular charge account, the store gives a customer credit
for no extra charge. That is, if he pays for the products that he buys soon after he gets his bill, there is no
extra charge. Thus a pair of trousers that cost $$14.95, plus 75 cents state sales tax, would still cost $$15.70 at
the end of the month when the bill is sent to the buyer. The store managers don't feel that a month is too long
to wait for their money. They are willing to wait this long because they are competing with other stores that
offer the same service. The store's waiting time is one of the costs of doing business. (A store that sells only
for cash may be able to sell the same trousers for less than $$15.70 because one of its costs is less.)
The other kind of charge account, called budget account, is like installment buying. It lets a buyer use
goods longer before paying his whole bill. With most of these charge accounts, the buyer has to pay only
10% or 15% of the total charge each month.
6. According to the passage, people charge when___________.
A. they want to pay in cash
B. they sell goods
C. they buy goods on credit
D. they don't have money to buy goods

B. Sure. I was born in London
D. Certainly not. I'm from London
D. No, no. You can't do that
5. — Do you mind telling me where you're from?

B. You can go your own way
D. Excuse me. I'm busy

B. No, no. John is not bad
D. Don't say that. It's ugly. John is good

B. Pardon? I have no idea
D. Sorry I don't know, but you can ask the man over there
2. — Mary, your dress is really beautiful. How is John?
3. — What can I do for you, madam?
4. — I'd like to take you to the coffee house on the corner.
7. With a regular charge account, the store allows you to pay later for the goods you buy
because___________.
A. the store managers don't need a high profit
B. it is a good way to promote sales
C. the store wants to make more profit
D. the store is competing with other stores by reducing its profit
8. For a budget account the buyer has to pay___________.
A. the price and an interest for the credit
B. much more than the price marked
C. less than the price marked
D. as much as he pays in cash
9. From the passage we know that state sales tax can be___________.
A. very low B. neglected C. quite high D. as high as 5%
10. From the passage it can be inferred that___________.
A. American stores offer good services willingly
B. a budget account is more favored than a regular account
C. American stores are competing severely
D. Americans don't have enough cash to pay
Passage 2
Not very long ago, a special family system existed in certain parts of
South India. In this system, the actual head of a family unit was the
mother's eldest brother, though the mother also had an important
position in the family. In families of this kind, a husband was actually
no more than a visitor. He did not live with his wife, but with his own
mother, brothers and sisters in another house. He saw his sons and
daughters sometimes, but the man who actually fed and cared for them
and acted as their father was their uncle——their mother's brother.
But this system, in which brothers take the place of the father, no
longer exists in South India except in a few villages. Economic changes
have had far-reaching effect on family life, family life began to change
when men went out to work in factories and offices instead of working
with their mothers, brothers, and sisters on the land. When a man went
out to work he had money of his own and could buy his own land and
build his own family, instead of depending on his mother and his
