Many years ago, when I was working as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Lisa. The poor
little girl had a very serious disease and was dying. The doctor had done his best but no medicine really worked. The
only chance to save her seemed to be a blood transfusion (输血) from her five-year-old brother. The little boy had the
same disease before and had developed the antibodies (抗体) to fight the illness.
The doctor talked to the little boy about what they planned to do, and asked him if he would be willing to give his
blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for a moment. He took a deep breath and said, “Yes, I’ll do it if it can save Lisa.”
As the transfusion was going on, the little boy lay quietly in bed next to his sister. He 1ooked at her and smiled all
the time. When everything was done and the color returned to his sister’s face, his smile disappeared and he looked a
little afraid. He 1ooked up at the doctor and asked, “Will I start to die now?”
He was too young to understand the doctor. He thought he would have to give all his blood to his sister, but he
agreed.
41. The doctor wanted the little boy to _________.
A. give his life to his sister B. give some of his blood to his sister
C. get the same disease as his sister D. give all his blood to his sister
42. What did the boy feel when the doctor talked to him about the transfusion?
A. He was unhappy to help his sister. B. He was willing to give his blood to his sister.
C. He was too excited to do anything. D. He was so afraid that he refused to do anything.
43. The writer still remember the story many years later _________.
A. because the doctor saved the little girl’s life B. because the little girl had a very strange disease
C. because of what the boy did for his sister D. because the sister and brother had the same disease

A world of color
No matter where you go, colors are everywhere! And while the colors may be the same, their meanings change
depending on the country.
Colors Different Meanings
Green
Purple
Green means “hope” in Ecuador. In the U.S., it’s a symbol of money and concern for the environment.
Purple is worn by kings and queens in Europe, while in Thailand, it’s worn by women whose husbands
have died.
Black
Black is the traditional color of mourning (哀悼) in the West. But on the Pacific islands of Melanesia, it’s a
symbol of beauty and speed.
White White is considered a pure color and is worn at weddings in America. In parts of Asia, however, white is
worn to funerals (葬礼) as a sign of winter, when everything is dead.
Red Red means “beautiful” in Russia, but in South Africa, it’s the color of mourning. In the United States, it’s
not good for a bride (新娘) to wear a red dress. In India or China, though, brides often wear red as a
symbol of good fortune.
Colors mean different things in different countries. No matter what the meaning is, color adds interest to our lives
and makes them brighter.
44. In the US if you prefer the color _____, it will probably show that you are concerned about the environment.
A. purple B. black C. white D. green

45. How many colors mentioned in the passage can be used as a sign of mourning?
A. Two B. Five C. Four D. Three
46. If a bride is wearing a red dress in the wedding, she must come from _____.
A. Thailand B. America C. India D. South Africa
C
All young people dream of traveling the world. They are restless and very eager to see new sights. However, they
have little idea how they would really do it if they are given the chance. Because their knowledge of geography is
quite limited, they seldom know much about the places they wish to visit or how they would get there.
