When she was found off the coast of California four years ago, the fur seal, known as
Ziggy Star, was skinny and fragile. She was unfit to return to the wild. And though a
professional rescue team took her in to care for her, Ziggy continued to decline. “I wouldn't
have given her next week,” says Uriarte, a surgeon who led a recent first-of-its-kind
brain operation on the seal.
The operation was the first of its kind to treat hydrocephalus(脑积水) in fur seals. The
surgical team at Tufts University was unable to find any documented evidence of a similar
procedure, so they needed a lot of preparation to operate on Ziggy's brain. The biggest
concern in operating on Ziggy was how to control the animal's anesthesia(麻醉). “When
they're under anesthesia their body's reactions include decreasing their heart rate, blood
pressure, and breath,” says Flower, describing the special challenges of operating on seals.
On the day of her surgery, Flower, who observes Ziggy and the other animals' care, says that
she and her team “were all quite anxious not knowing what would happen”. Moving quickly
was extremely important; the longer she was under anesthesia, the more likely that she could
lose her breathing, says the surgeon. The seal had been kept on land to prevent water from
entering the cut on her head.
3
Now, Ziggy is eating a full diet and is beginning to gain weight again. “Recently I've
allowed her to go swimming,” says Flower. However, the source of Ziggy's neurological
disorder is still a mystery. “My theory is that when she was found, she had a head injury,”
Uriarte says. “Hit by a boat maybe...That happens a lot with seals. I don't think there's
enough information to make that assumption. We just don't know what happened to her.”

Scores on English tests are very important to students around the world. In order to make
sure that they do their best, both students and teachers should stay informed of how these tests
are changing.
Clive Roberts, a director at ELS Educational Services, says the tests are changing greatly
in response to the global growth in the use of English as a common language among people
with different native languages. He says English “is one of the keys now to international
student mobility. So, for that reason, a lot of new tests are being developed; old tests are being
revamped to meet the needs of universities and employers worldwide.”
Mr. Roberts says several parts of standardized tests have changed recently. Now, many
tests are given on computers. And, he says, tests measure all four skills of language learning:
reading, listening, speaking and writing. Computer testing will reduce the length of time
required for testing, because the tests adjust to the test-taker's ability. These computer-
adaptive tests also increase accuracy in scoring. Computer-adaptive tests change depending
on the test-taker's responses. They can become more or less difficult during the testing
session. For this reason, the set of correct answers will be different for each test-taker.
Another change to language testing relates to cultural sensitivity. Mr. Roberts says test
development companies are now hiring people with intercultural communication backgrounds.
The companies want to make sure the test does not upset test-takers. Having negative
feelings may affect a student's performance on the test.
The tests have also become more proficiency-oriented. The items are being designed in
such a way that they test real-world proficiency and not simply sort of an artificial
environment or a specific set of skills that are taught in a classroom. So a lot of authentic texts,
and a lot of authentic listening passages are being used.
In addition, changes to the tests will encourage schools to teach their students to use
5
English for everyday life and study.
(A)28. What does the writer intend to do in Paragraph 1?

That people often experience trouble sleeping in a different bed in unfamiliar
surroundings is a phenomenon known as the “first-night” effect. If a person stays in the
same room the following night they tend to sleep more soundly. Yuka Sasaki and her
colleagues at Brown University set out to investigate the origins of this effect.
Dr. Sasaki knew the “first-night” effect probably has something to do with how
humans evolved. The puzzle was what benefit would be gained from it when performance
might be affected the following day. She also knew from previous work conducted on birds
and dolphins that these animals put half of their brains to sleep at a time so that they can rest
while remaining watchful enough to avoid predators(捕食者). This led her to wonder if
people might be doing the same thing. To take a closer look, the team studied 35 healthy
people as they slept in the unfamiliar environment of the university's Department of
Psychological Sciences. The participants each slept in the department for two nights and were
carefully monitored with techniques that looked at the activity of their brains. Dr. Sasaki
found, as expected, the participants slept less well on their first night than they did on their
second, taking more than twice as long to fall asleep and sleeping less overall. During deep
sleep, the participants' brains behaved in a similar manner seen in birds and dolphins. On the
first night only, the left hemispheres(半球) of their brains did not sleep nearly as deeply as
their right hemispheres did.
Curious if the left hemispheres were indeed remaining awake to process information
detected in the surrounding environment, Dr. Sasaki re-ran the experiment while presenting
the sleeping participants with a mix of regularly timed beeps(蜂鸣声) of the same tone and
irregular beeps of a different tone during the night. She worked out that, if the left hemisphere
was staying watchful to keep guard in a strange environment, then it would react to the
irregular beeps by stirring people from sleep and would ignore the regularly timed ones. This
is precisely what she found.
(C)32. What did researchers find puzzling about the “first-night” effect?
A. To what extent it can trouble people.
B. What role it has played in evolution
7
C. In what way it can be beneficial.
D. What circumstances may set it off.
【解析】第二段第二句可知答案。第二段开头指出,佐佐木博士知道 ,“第一夜”
效应可能和人类的进化方式有关。难题是在第二天的表现可能会受到影响的情况下,这一现象带来什么好处。
(D)33. What do we learn about Dr. Sasaki doing her research?
A. She found birds and dolphins remain watchful while asleep.
B. She found birds and dolphins sleep in much the same way.
C. She conducted studies on birds' and dolphins' sleeping patterns.
D. She got some idea from previous studies on birds and dolphins.
【解析】第二段第三、四句可知,佐佐木博士在之前对鸟类和海豚的研究工作中得
到了一些启示。
(B)34. What did Dr. Sasaki do when she first did her experiment?
A. She employed 35 participants from her Department of Psychological Sciences.
B. She monitored the brain activity of participants sleeping in a new environment.
C. She kept the participants awake.
D. She tested her findings about birds and dolphins on human subjects.
【解析】第二段第五、六句可知 ,佐佐木博士的团队对睡在陌生环境中的35个健
康的人进行了研究,监控观察了他们的大脑活动。
(C)35. What did Dr. Sasaki find about the participants in her experiment?
A. They tended to enjoy certain tones more than others.
B. They felt sleepy when exposed to regular beeps.
C. They tended to see irregular beeps as a threat.
D. They differed in their tolerance of irregular tones.
