(1) According to a recent survey, about 25 percent of Chinese college students
now hold a part-time or temporary job, compared with nearly none 10 years ago, and
this figure increases to 72 percent during summer vacation. (2) College students are
seen waiting on tables, clerking in stores, advertising in streets, teaching in families
and doing whatever work they can find.
(3) Why do they want odd jobs – jobs usually requiring little skill and knowledge
(4) The primary reason, I think, is money. (5) Feeling the pressure of soaring inflation
as books, movies and bus fares have all gone up in price, there is scarcely a young
boy or girl who does not want to earn a little money to help cover the increasingly
higher college costs, and at best save enough to go travelling or buy things they have
long desired. (6) In this way they hope to be economically independent and avoid the
indignity of having to ask for money again and again. (7) Besides they want to gain
some experience in the ways of society. (8) Students growing up from nursery school
to college only know about books and have trouble dealing with realities. (9) Working
on a part-time basis can provide them with a rare opportunity to know the outside
world and prepare them for a future career.
(10) The significance for college students of doing a part-time job means more
than money and experience: It will broaden their outlook and exert a profound
influence on their personality and life.
理由篇
叙述理由和分析原因是属于同一类型的英语议论文。所不同的是后者是解

比较篇
比较型议论文实则 是运用比较的手段来阐述自己的观点。这类作文要求学
生在比较所讨论的两个事物的优缺点时，有自己的 观点，有自己的倾向。因此
在具体写作时，对赞成的事物，其优点要多写详写，而对其缺点要少写，甚至
略过；而对反对的事物，其优点要少写略写，一笔带过，对其缺点则要不惜笔
墨，大写特写。这 样处理，作者的观点才能得以体现。

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic

(1) Nowadays, heavy traffic has become the source of greatest complaint in
many big cities. (2) As it has seriously influenced people’s daily life and economic
development, the highest priority of governments has been given to the problem and
many experts have been called in for advice.
(3) A great number of solutions are being offered. (4) Some people suggest that
more streets and roads should be constructed. (5) The advantage is obvious: it can
reduce traffic density and hence speed up the flow of buses and cars. (6) But traffic
flows constantly rise to fill whatever scale of roads and highways are provided for
them. (7) And in a city with booming industry, land is precious and cannot be
extravagantly used for traffic. (8) So others argue that the number of bicycles and
cars should be opened up because buses can accommodate more passengers. (9) But


the decrease in the number of bicycles and cars might give rise to another new set of
problems, such as inconvenience to people.
(10) Since neither of the suggestions can effectively solve the problem of heavy
traffic, there is an increased awareness that the two solutions may be combined with
other possible solutions to produce the best effect.
分析篇
分析型议论文主要是判断和分析所讨论的事物或观点的性质，具体地说就是阐
述其重要性，正确性，必要性或荒谬性，危害性等。

more, reading books can increase our intellectual ability, broaden our minds and make

(10) Though with the advent of TV, books are no longer read as widely as they
once were, nothing can replace the role that books play in our lives.

important contribution rural workers have made to the urban development. (5) They
have done most of dirty, dangerous and underpaid jobs in heavy industries,

have become an indispensable part of urban life to a point where the machinery of a
city cannot operate without those cogs, though small and unnoticed. (7) Yet an anti-
migrant attitude runs consistently through the mainstream of urban consciousness. (8)
City residents complain that migrant workers have worsened traffic and sanitation
problems and have threatened to take already scarce urban jobs. (9) They also blame
them for the sharp rise in the urban crime rate.
(10) Despite the problems posed by migrants, one thing is certain: a grand,
prosperous edifice of the city is based on the work of millions of migrant workers.
批驳篇
批驳型议论文主要是对某一观点或做法进行批评与驳斥。常见的题目有：

出来一种作者认为不正确的看法进行批评，然后 阐述自己在这方面的看法和观

(1) Nowadays, advertisements can be found everywhere in a big city such as
Shanghai. (2) They shout at us from the television screen and radio loudspeakers,

billboards all day and flash messages to us in colored lights all night.
(3) Faced with a flood of advertisements, some people wonder whether it is
necessary to have such huge sums spent on advertising. (4) They often cite in
illustration of it the attractive, but false and deceptive advertisements to which many
consumers fall victim. (5) They suggest that since advertising is an entirely productive
industry and may even harm the customers’ interest, why don’t we stop advertising
and use the money to reduce the price of goods (6) It sounds like a good idea, but they
fail to notice the contribution advertising makes to our society. (7) Because the
production of a better product to compete for customer’s money is the goal of


advertisers, customers are thus given a chance to compare their products and get the
best and cheapest one. (8) Besides, as the advertisement can provide people with a lot
of immediate and detailed information as to the availability of a certain product, or a
service or a job, it makes life much more convenient. (9) And another thing we
mustn’t forget: the fact that we pay so little for our daily newspapers and TV
programs is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers.
(10) Advertising performs such a useful service to our society that we can’t
imagine what would happen if there were no advertisements.
