Buying a PC? Here's what you need to know
If you're in the market for a new computer, you need to know the
following things that your PC manufacturer or retailer won't
necessarily share with you. Otherwise you could end up overpaying
for your next laptop or desktop.
Don't pay attention to the new models, but instead the new
chipsets—the things that power the PCs. “My advice is to buy a new
PC right after a new motherboard chipset comes out,” says David
Cox, the CEO of an internet company in Cheyenne, Wyoming. “You
will get the most longevity out of your system that way.” AMD and
Intel have released new chips recently. Competition between the
two has driven down prices and introduced a lot of cool, new
features, according to Cox.
Tune in to “special” days. Antony Vitillo, an artificial reality
developer, says certain days are the best time to buy a PC, beyond
Black Friday and Cyber Monday. “Some of them are celebrated by
one particular website, like Amazon Prime Day,” he says. Wait for
these days to see what deals are being offered. But also, know that
there will be other windows that open later. In other words, if you
miss Black Friday, don't worry; Cyber Monday is just a few hours
away.
Hang on for the PC buying season. Yes, there's a season, says
Yanatha Desouvre, an information system professional who has
watched computer prices for the last two decades. Fall is the best
time for a PC purchase. “Manufacturers have back-to-school sales,”
says Desouvre. The holiday season is also a good time, with retailers
trying to meet or exceed their fourth-quarter sales goals. But
perhaps the lowest prices come to those who wait a little longer, a
few days after the holidays, when the discounting can reach a frenzy.
The worst time? Summer, since prices are high and it's near the end
of the product life cycle.
Finally, when you have an opportunity to buy a discounted PC,
seize it. Sale quantities are limited, notes Eric Rintell, president of
Rintell Technologies. “You have to be swift,” he says. “In the past,
I have woken up in the middle of the night to ensure that I can

Scott Babcock was carrying out an early morning runway
inspection at America's farthest north airport when he saw what he
thought were a couple of wolves. He took a closer look through his
headlights and saw something bigger. Two young polar bears ran
away when they saw the Alaska airport worker's truck approach. He
made sure to videotape their departure.
Most airports only worry about wildlife when dealing with bird
strikes, but state officials at the airport in the city of Utqiagvik have
to prepare for marinemammals that wander in from the Chukchi
Sea.
A bearded seal weighing about 450 pounds sat down and relaxed
on a runway in October after a storm. The Department of
Transportation warned pilots of “low seals”. But polar bears are
another story. They come with claws, teeth and sometimes they can
cause death. And at this time of year, when the sun is down all day
for the next few months, polar bears can be hard to see.
“Those bears could be 40 yards away from you and you
wouldn't know it,” said Babcock, the equipment operator. If
someone walked out of a building and was trapped between a polar
bear and a fence, “things could get real ugly and real fast,” he said.
What makes Babcock's job more difficult is that polar bears are
protected marine mammals. Airport workers are not permitted to
run after or attack them. If bears wouldn't leave, they call in the
wildlife management department of the North Slope Borough.
The bears got themselves out of harm's way Thursday. They
entered the airport before scheduled flights, and 30 mph winds had
grounded some local flights. When the bears saw Babcock's
headlights, they ran to an infield area and eventually a snow dump.
The bears hung out for a few hours, disappeared and showed up
again Thursday night. An animal control officer may have driven
them away, Babcock said. He figured they were hungry.
Calls to the North Slope Borough and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, which manages American polar bears, were not immediately
returned.
