Urban agriculture may be the future for French cities. The idea of establishing gardens and
farms on the roofs of Paris houses may not be as impossible as it seems—according to an article
in L'Express.
District 14 of Paris, notably rue de la Tombe Issoire, may be the first area of the French
capital to see the revival of urban agriculture. Establishing gardens and farms on the roofs would
improve the supply of city residents.
With the technical support of the Living Roofs Association, French ecologist Celia Blauel is
promoting the idea of the establishment of a farm on one of the five principal water tanks of
Paris, near Parc Montsouris. The long-term aim is to create the country's biggest urban
agricultural surface.
The planned location of the first urban farm is already covered with grass on a 30 cm thick
layer of soil. The area of 2.5 hectares would allow the feeding of 400 city residents, according to
Blauel. She also points out the idea is not about creating the food autonomy of Paris, but that
benefits would include new jobs for city residents and the improvement of food supplies.
At the moment, testing of urban roof farms is taking place in four locations and the results
seem encouraging, according to Fabienne Giboudeaux, deputy in charge of green areas and
biodiversity at Paris City Hall.
Public discussions on the topic of roof gardens suggest that Parisians worry only about
pollution. However, this problem may be reduced by avoiding the plantation of some aromatic
plants such as thyme, which tend to attract pollutants. Not to mention that the healthiness of the
products of the chemical agriculture can also be questioned, according to an ecologist, Pascal
Julien.
In total, 100 hectares of rooftops could be transformed into farms, but French ecologists say
that they would be satisfied if only 30 hectares were turned into roof gardens by 2024.

When scientists study climate change, they mostly focus on the change in global average
temperature, but neglect to explore how temperature variability has changed with climate
change. It is well known that warming temperatures will cause the rising ocean and increased
flooding, especially in coastal regions such as those in the United States, but what do varying
temperatures mean for the changing seasons?
“We describe, for the first time, changes in temperature variability across the globe. We've
had a long discussion about changes in the mean temperature. It has been continuing for over 30
years, ” leading study author George Wang, at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental
Biology in Germany, said in a statement. “It's very clear that temperatures have shifted across the
globe. It's less clear if the variation in temperature has changed.”
Described in the journal Nature Climate Change, Wang and co-author Michael Dillon, with
the University of Wyoming, analyzed more than one billion temperature measurements from
7,906 weather stations with data from 1926 to 2009. Monthly and yearly averages of daily
temperature extremes revealed that since 1950, minimum and maximum daily and average
temperatures are increasing, which means what we experience over a few days now is more like
temperatures we experience over a year.
