At a dinner party the guests and their hosts (1) were involved in a heated (2) discussion, or
rather an argument (3) concerning the question of whether women had as much self-control
as men. As they argued, signs appeared to one of the guests that a cobra was present in the
room. While his first impulse (4) was to jump back, he knew that this would be a mistake; so
he urged the other diners in a commanding tone to hold still without telling them why. Shortly
(5), the cobra emerged (6) on the veranda; and the man ran quickly to the door to slam (7)
it shut. It was soon discovered that the cobra had crawled (8) across the foot of the hostess,
who kept calm, not uttering a sound. Thus the conclusion of this crisis (9) laid bare the fact that
women have as much self-control as men.

Lying comfortably upon a sofa, Harker Brayton smiled as he read the book *Marvels* |(奇迹)|
*of Science*. Suddenly something in a dark corner (1) of the room attracted his attention
(2). In the shadow, under the bed, he noticed (3) two points of light about an inch apart,
shining (4) with a greenish glow |(浅绿色的光)|. His attention was now directed (5) fully to
those shining points. There (6), almost right under the foot- rail |(脚沿)| of the bed (7), he saw
the body of a large snake (8). The points of light were its (9) eyes! Brayton rose to his feet
(10) and prepared to back softly away from (11) the snake. At that moment, however (12),
he felt strangely unwilling to do (13) so. Instead of moving backward as (14) planned, he
took a step forward (15), and then another! The snake made neither (16) sound nor motion,
but its evil head was still (17) thrust |(挺伸)| forth, its eyes were shining as if (18) electrified
|(充电)|, sending needles of light through (19) the shadows. Frightened, Brayton fell to the
floor (20), dead. Two hours later, when the doctor was pulling (21) the body out, he chanced
to look under (22) the bed. “Good God!” he cried (23). “A snake!” He reached under the bed,
pulled out (24) the snake and threw it to (25) the center of the room, where (26) it lay
without motion. It was a snake made (27) of cloth and filled with cotton. Its eyes (28) were
two buttons.

One Saturday morning, Bob insisted that he should do the cooking (S1) for a change. He had
always considered himself as an excellent cook. His wife, Susan, however, hardly thought
so (S2). But since Bob insisted, she agreed unwillingly to let him have a free hand. Then Susan
went into the sitting- room to read. She had hardly settled down (S3) when Bob began
calling to her from the kitchen. She had half expected (S4) this would happen, smiled to
herself and continued to read. Seeing that there was no response (反应), Bob came into the
sitting-room himself. How could he work with no equipment (S5), he demanded. Susan
calmly told him where everything was and Bob rushed back only to find that the milk had
boiled over (S6). About an hour passed and Susan could not understand why things were so
quiet (S7). Bob must be managing after all! The smell of something burning (S8) quickly
proved her wrong and caused her to drop her book and run to the kitchen. Thick smoke
greeted (S9) her when she opened the door. When the smoke cleared, Susan saw to her
dismay that her once spotless kitchen now looked like a battlefield (S10).
