(一)

A young man asked Socrates the secret to success. Socrates told
the young man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met.
Socrates asked the young man to walk with him toward the river. When
the water got up to their neck, Socrates took the young man by
surprise and ducked him into the water. The boy struggled to get
out but Socrates was strong and kept him there until the boy started
turning blue. Socrates pulled his head out of the water and the first
thing the young man did was to gasp and take a deep breath of air.
Socrates asked,
The boy replied, Socrates said, is the secret to success.

When you want success as badly as you wanted the air, then you will
get it. There is no other secret.

译：一个年轻人向苏格拉底询问成功的秘诀，苏格拉底让年轻人第二天

(二)

My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that
with treatment he would be able to walk normally — but would never
run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery,
casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldnt know he had
a problem when you saw him walk .

The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do
during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too.
We never told him that he probably wouldnt be able to run as well
as the other children. So he didnt know.

In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross—country team.
