thank you very much. i really appreciate that.

i want to thank jack ma and his entire team for inviting all of
us of starbucks here today. it’s an honor to be here. happy
anniversary!

i don’t have prepared remarks today. i want to speak from my
heart and speak about the subject that’s really dear to me. and
semantically i would call it humanity.

who would believe that in 1984, 1985 that we could raise
money for a coffee concept in which we were going to charge
2,3,4 times more than the traditional cup of coffee, and served
in the paper cup and gave health care and ownership to every
single employee. well, not many people believed it took me
over a year to raise ＄3.8 million. it’s a moment in time that i
want to share with you; a personal moment that i hope gives
some hope and inspiration for those people who also have in
trouble raising money.

my wife was pregnant with our first child. she was working. we
were trying to raise money for starbucks. i had no salary. and
her father asked to take a walk with me when she was seven-
month pregnant and he said we sat and he said: howard, it’s
really the time for you to give up this dream. it’s a hobby. it’s
not a job. you have to get a real job. and i was

crushed.

but my message then and my message now to all of you is
sometimes the difference between winning and losing is a very
very fine great line, and that fine great line is tenacity, is
passion is commitment, at times is a little luck. but there is
always going to be people who are going to tell you: do
something else; take a safer ground.

i have met so many people along the way who said to me: you
know i have that idea about coffee. why i have so many ideas
that i decided not to cheese. there are happy and there are
bitter. so my message to you is: do not let anyone, your
friends, your parents, your colleagues tell you that your
dreams can not come true.

china is the envy of the world. we sit in america and we are in
awe of what is going on here. i come here once twice a year
and every time i come here i cannot believe the scale and
growth of the development, the creativity and the innovation.
what an unbelievable place to be and what an unbelievable
time to be in it. do not give up’

i think as i look back on the growth of success of starbucks
the number one reason why we have succeeded has not been
the real estate, has not been the coffee, although we are
buying the

highest quality coffee in the world and roasting its perfection.
it’s none of that. it’s the most fragile characteristic and
attribute of the consumer brand of a company or an enterprise
and its trust. and the obligation and responsibility of building
an enterprise can be controlled by trust, transparency and
ethical way of doing business. now i understand the majority
of you are websites business. as i look at the web today, in
many ways, it has been the death of distance, but it also can
be the birth of truth and transparency and right kind of values.

because of the unbelievable rich that i truly believe that the
enduring success of any enterprise is based on that
achievement and attempt every day, of that fragile balance
between profit ability and the revenues.

so let me close by saying: i’m honor to be here. i listen very
intently to the conversation before me. and i was one of you. i
was that young men trying to raise money against all eyes. i
encourage you to keep dreaming every single day, and when
you keep dreaming, you will have some moments dream
bigger.
