frequently asked the question, ”Can you use chopsticks?”. I have lived in
Korea,
Japan, and China. In each country, I have, m
ore often than not and without
having
requested
one,
been
given
a
fork
when
one
was
available.
I
have
politely
refusde and said
that
I would
be fine
with chopsticks. Som
etim
es, I have to m
ake
further explanation.
Chopsticks are the least of
m
y worries when I am eating
in an
Asian hom
e or
restaurant. In fact, learning how to use chopsticks takes m
e nothing but a few weeks.
This is not to say I was skillful, though. Learning how to use chopsticks is easy for m
e,
whereas learning the rituals and how to conduct m
yself at the table is quite difficult.
Just how m
any tim
es do I have to say “no, thank you” when I really m
ean “no, thank
yo
u, I truly am

full”?
How do I get away with refusing
m
ore
food without offending
som
eone? If I insist and I still get m
ore, is it appropriate just not to eat it? This would

polite where I com
e from.
I have enjoyed many great m
eals and m
y interactions with the people have been
great. I am
increasingly aware that I will never be able to give back as m
uch as I have
received. I don’t know how I can ever thank all of the people who introducde m
e to
eating in Asia.

arry for all the “right reasona”. Love had nothing to do with m
arriage. And, for

husband’s
part,
well,
I
suspect
love
was
on
his

ind
either.

arride

feel yound. He was such an ordinary m

ordinary
midlife
crisis.
He
was
divorced,
looking
for younger
wom
en
and

career
change. That didn’t bother me, though. He was
still fairly charm
ing, pretty hansom

and abore all rich. I married for m
oney, and I don’t have any doubt about it. My friends
don't applaud

y decision, but I can also tell that they wish, at least a little bit, for

e things that I now enjoy. They always prefer to spend a lot of time by

pool than at

es.
And another thing, they are
always com
plaining about their “beloved”. “He’s always watching how m
uch I spend.”

ore like a business relationship than a marriage.”

My husband, however, doesn’ t care how m
uch I spend a
nd our marriage never
becam
e a business because it already was one. You could say, we have a m
utual
understanding. We are very realistic about the whole thing. It is painful for m
y friends
when they realize that love is just an illusion. Marriage for never existed for m
e. And,
he’ll never divorce m
e. He’d lose too m
uch m
oney.

portant because without it life has no m
eaning or purpose. Love allows us
to do m
ore than we could ever accom
plish without its power. So often we take good
care
of
our
physical
needs.
We

ake
sure
our
bodies
are
fed,
cleaned,
clothed,
exercised and rested. However, we tend to overlook the m
ost important need-love. Of

course, as a society, love is not overlooked. Popular
m
edia constantly places great
em
phasis on what we need to do to atract “love”. But being loved is not as powerful an
em
otional need as that desire to love som
eone else.
They need to love and care for others is built into us biologically. This need is what
allows parents to give up sleep and food while raising their children. This need is what
allows people to put them
selves at risk to save others from
natural disasters or threats.
Love m
eans to children, hold treasure. We do not hurt, or cause pain to
those we love; rather, we seek to alleviate their suffering. It’s not about wanting
to
possess or control others; it’s
about wanting to set them
free. Love is the power that
allows the wheel of life to continue turning, for when we love we look beyond our own
needs
and
desires.
We
sacrifice
our
tim
e,
our
energy, our
wishes,
and
som
etimes
even ourslves because of love. It is love that allows em
ergency services personnel to
face danger. It is love that allows soldiers to risk everting. The ultim
ate definition of
love is not about feeling good but rather doing good.
