要



委婉语是用婉转或温和的方式来表达某些事实或思想，使人更易于接受。在
中英跨文化交际中，
准确地使用委婉语可以减少文化交流的障碍，
增强文化之间
的认同感。
本文通 过对委婉语在中英两种语言中不同用法的探究，
使英语学习者
更好地了解委婉语，
以及 支撑其形成发展的各种文化因素，
旨在提高英语学习者
的语言运用能力，更好地了解文化共性和 差异性。

Abstract

Euphemism
is a
way
to
express
a fact
and one
’
s idea by using some indirect
and
mild words, which makes people tend to receive it. In cross cultural Communication,
using euphemism

accurately can diminish the blocks in cultural communication, and
strengthen the sense of identity in two cultures. The paper will help people who learn
English
know
more
about
euphemism
and
the
formative
and
the
developmental
cultural factors by researching the different usages of euphemisms between
Chinese
and
English.
The
purpose
of
this
paper
is
helping
English
learner
develop
their
abilities of using languages and know more about cultural similarities and differences.

Introduction
Euphemism is to express one
’
s idea in an indirect way. Taboo is the original motivation of
euphemism.
When
something
which
makes
people
feel
scared,
shame,
respect
is
mentioned,
euphemism will help them avoid getting into embarrass. Both English and Chinese have such a
kind of language phenomenon. There also exist some differences of euphemism in two languages.
The paper intended to introduce the similar and different points of euphemism in two languages,
and prove euphemism plays an important role in cross cultural communication.

The Definition of Euphemism

The
word
euphemism

created
by
English
writer
George
Blunt
in
1680s.
It
is
defined as a good or favorable interpretation of a bad word (
杨

刘
P124). Its prefix
eu-
means good, and its radical
–
phemism
means speech. Therefore, on the surface,
it
means
good
word.
Actually,
it
is
called
as
sweet
word
or
decorative
word.
Euphemism
is
a
special
way
to
express
one
’
s
ideas.
There
are
some
different
definitions
in
different
dictionary.
In
Oxford
Advanced
Learner
’
s
English- Chinese
Dictionary, it is an indirect word or phrase that people often use to refer to something
embarrassing
or
unpleasant,
sometimes
to
make
it
seem
more
acceptable
than
it
really is. In the Merriam Webster Dictionary, it is a polite, suitable, and indirect term
