8
short
conversations
and

conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked
about
what
was

11. M: I don
’
t think I can handle all of these books for this course.
W: I found that you don
’
t have to read them thoroughly. Just skim through and get
the major points.
Q: Where does the woman suggest the man to do?
12.
W: If it hadn
’
t been snowing so hard, I would have been on time when I went to
work.
M: It
’
s too bad you didn
’
t make it. The boss is waiting for you.
Q: What can we learn from the conversation?
13.
M:
Our
headmaster
has
been
busy
since
last
month.
He
never
stops
working
twelve o
’
clock at night as far as I know.
W: I shall never have troubled him so much, had I known he was busy.
Q: What can we learn from the conversation?
14. W: What is it that you enjoy driving a taxi?
M: Well, I mean you do it for money, obviously, like most jobs. But I enjoy being
my own boss. And you
’
re very much in control of what you do.
Q: What does the man mean?
15. M: Lots of people enjoy dancing, do you?
W: Believe it or not, that is the last thing I want to do.
Q: What does the woman mean?
16. W: If I were you, I
’
d be more careful about locking the door at night.
M: Don
’
t worry. No one will break in.
Q: What does the woman mean?
17. M: It
’
s good you brought the book back.
W: I thought you might need the novels this weekend. Thanks for letting me use
them.
Q: What do we learn about the woman?
18.
W:
I
’
m
worried
about
sending
my
son
to
college.
Most
college
students
are
so
wild nowadays.
M: Only a few are. Most students are busy studying.
Q: What does the man mean?
Now you will hear two long conversations.
Conversation 1
M: I
’
d like to see the personal manager, please.
W: Oh, Yes. Have a seat then, sir.
M: Thank you. I came in answer to your ad for a salesman.
W: What qualifications do you have for department store work?
M:
I
worked
in
a
small
department
store
last
Christmas
vacation,
and
my
major
in
university is business administration.
W: In what department did you work?
M: Man
’
s clothing.
W: We don
’
t have any vacancies there at present. Do you happen to know anything
about sporting items?
M: Well, I
’
m a big sports fan, if that
’
s any qualification.
W: Sounds great. How soon would you be able to start to work?
M: As soon as possible----this afternoon if you like.
W: We usually need to get some information before we employ a person, you can fill
out
an application form
right
away. We
’
ll
go over
your
reference
while
you
’
re
going through your period of training. What do you think?
M: On top of the world. Then I
’
m about to start training at once?
W:
No,
tomorrow
morning
will
be
soon
enough.
Report
here
at
9:30,
and
you
’
ll
receive full pay during your three days of training. I hope you
’
ll enjoy working
with us.
M: I
’
m sure I will. Thank you very much.
Questions 19 to 21 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
19. Why does the man want to see the manager?
20. In what department will the man probably work?
21. When can the man start his training?
Conversation 2
M: Come in, Joan. Have you finished that report for me yet?
W:
Yes,
Mr.
Canfield,
but
I
haven’t
had
time
to
prepare
the
sa
les
figures
yet,
I’m
afraid.
M: That’s all right
.
I know you’ve been busy. I believe you’ve moved
to a new house.
W: Not quite, we’re moving next week. We’ve been in our present house since 1987
and it’s got
ten too small for us now.
M: Well, I hope the new place suits you better.
W: I think so. It’s taken us six months to find a bigger place that we like
----one with a
bigger garden. Since the children have grown they need a lot more space.
M: Well, the best of luck with the new place -- I hope the move goes well.
W: Thanks. Oh, by the way, I’ve sent a copy of the report to Mr. Hansen
--is that OK?
M: Yes, good idea. Miss Grace, our sales director, has just asked me about it in fact.
They’ve
already
decided
to
accept
whatever
suggestions
you’ve
made,
so
they
obviously trust your judgment.
W: That’s good. I’
ll go and make a start on the sales figures now then.
M:
OK Joan. I’
l
l see you later when you’ve finished them.
