阅读理解

I'm not much of a gardener. I love having beautiful flowers-but I don't have a good track record
when it comes to making them grow.

A few months after our son left for the Middle East, my friend gifted me a box of tulip bulbs (

金香球茎
). She explained that these bulbs were put into the ground in the fall and lay sleeping all
winter. They had all the nutrients they needed inside the bulb and would come out in the spring.
''When you see the leaves of the tiny flowers pushing toward the sun, you'll know that it's almost
time for your son to come home. They'll give you what you need most.'' She walked me through
the process of planting them. I thanked her

trying to show my gratitude for her gift.

It was a long winter

cold and dark. I endured both the weather and the loneliness and fear I
felt with my son away. Dead leaves, frost and finally a heavy snow covered the area where I'd
planted those flowers, and I soon forgot they were there.

Finally the weather began to warm. One day, as I walked down my front steps, I noticed an area
of green. I bent down to inspect the situation more clearly and saw that those tulips had begun
to grow, their tiny leaves forcing their way to the sun.

Day after day I noted the flowers' progress. And day after day, the time approached when my
son would finally be home. Now with spring just around the corner, nothing could keep either of
us
from
marching
toward
the
light.
Almost
all
of
those
bulbs
bloomed.
And
with each
brightly
colored flower, I marked off one day closer to getting to hold my son in my arms again.

阅读理解

It is obvious that all of our childhood memories are not accidental. When you are a child, every
scent, every sound, every move, every toy, the first day of school, the first kiss, the first step…
Everything together makes what is the personality of a man. All these are pieces of one whole
entity.

I was about 6 years old. My mom's best friend left to another town and asked my mom to stay
at her place with me for two days in order to look after her two sons. One was a little older than I
was, and the second boy appeared to be super grown-up, for he was already fourteen. I always
enjoyed staying at their place.

I
remember
the
second day
we
were
supposed
to
have
the
come-back
party
for
my
mom's
friend at her place. I woke up. Mom went to work and reminded me to be nice and clean by the
time she came back. I stayed with Tony, the older of the boys and suddenly somebody called him
and though he was not permitted to leave me alone-he left. He said it would not be long. But it
took him forever. I realized that I was alone. I could not come out of the house, so I opened the
window.
I
was
so
desperate.
So
lonely.
So
betrayed.
At
that
moment
I
pulled
the
curtain
so
strongly that I fell on the floor. And there I was standing-one little criminal-desperate to escape
and knowing that I would be punished for destroying the curtain that was not even ours.

But then something changed. I stopped weeping. I looked around and realized that I was in a safe
place, and that mom would come back and kiss me no matter what I had done.

This was
a
moment
of
pure
happiness,
not
the
happiness
of
getting
a
new
toy
or
a
dog,
or
going to the party of your best friend. It was the moment of clarity for me-the first time in my life
when I realized that I was happy to have my mom and that I was safe. My eyes saw the world in
different shades that moment. And by the way-I was not punished for the curtain. I fell asleep on
my mom's knees.

1

What is the best title for this passage?

A. An Unforgettable Party
B. A Childhood Memory

C. A Happy Day in My Mom's Best Friend's Home
D. The Rules You Should Follow

What best describes the author's feelings toward childhood memories?

A. Childhood memories are easy to forget.

B. They make what is the personality of a man.

C. Good memories are always much easier for us to remember.

D. Childhood memories are always strange and incomprehensible.

3

What happened to the author when he was 6 years old?

A. His family moved to another apartment.

B. He always fought with mom's friend's children for toys.

C. He was punished by his mom for destroying her friend's curtain.

D. He was locked inside a house and failed to get out by the window.

4

In the last paragraph, the word

A. the moment he received a present from his mom

B. the time he spent in mom's friend's home

C. the moment he realized his mom's love

D. the time he destroyed the curtain

When my father married my mother in 1943 he gave my mother a 1937 crown coin and told
her to keep it in the back of her purse and not spend it. This would mean that she always felt that
she was protected and would always have money if she really needed it.

When I was married in 1970 my husband who had heard this story obtained a 1937 crown for
me and I have always kept it in my wallet and I have always had enough for my needs.

A friend recently fell on hard times partly through external (

and tried to teach her budget techniques, but none of them has been
a solution. She has just

Last week she looked pale and unwell, very depressed and hopeless. I then thought about how
the crown, a reminder of another's care and love, had protected me so I went to the bank for a
$$100 dollar bill. I told my friend the story and asked her to keep the $$100 in the back of her wallet.
It turned out that she didn't have a wallet so she put the money in a little pencil case where she
kept her coins. She immediately felt better.

Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just
read.

Milton Hershey was born near the small village of Derry Church, Pennsylvania, in 1857. He only
attended school through the fourth grade; at that point, he was
apprenticed
(
做学徒
) to a printer
in a nearby town. After a while, he left the printing business and was apprenticed to a Lancaster,
Pennsylvania
candy
maker.
And
at
the
age
of
eighteen,
he
opened
his
own
candy
store
in
Philadelphia. In spite of his talents as a candy maker, the shop failed after six years.

After the failure of his Philadelphia store, Milton headed for Denver, where he learned the art
of making
caramels
(
焦糖
). Then in Denver, Milton once again attempted to open his own candy-
making
businesses,
in
Chicago,
New
Orleans,
and
New
York
City.
Finally,
in
1886,
he
went
to
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he raised the money necessary to try again. This company

the
Lancaster Caramel Company

established Milton's reputation as a master candy maker.

In
1893,
Milton
attended
the
Chicago
International
Exposition,
where
he
saw
a
display
of
German
chocolate-making
implements.
Fascinated
by
the
equipment,
he

his
Lancaster candy factory and began producing chocolate, which he used for coating his caramels.
By the next year, production had grown to include cocoa, sweet chocolate, and baking chocolate.
The
Hershey
Chocolate
company
was
born
in
1894
as
a
subsidiary
(

of
the
Lancaster
Caramel Company. Six years later, Milton sold the caramel company, but reserved the rights, and
the equipment, to make chocolate. He believed that a large market of chocolate consumers was
waiting for someone to produce reasonably priced candy. He was right.

Milton Hershey returned to the village where he had been born, in the heart of dairy country,
and opened his chocolate manufacturing plant. With access to all the fresh milk he needed, he
began producing the finest milk chocolate. The plant that opened in a small Pennsylvania village
in 1905 is today the largest chocolate factory in the world. The sweets created at this facility are
favorites around the world.

The area where the factory is located is now known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. Within the first
decades of its existence, the town of Hershey thrived, as did the chocolate business. A bank, a
school,
churches,
a
department
store,
even
a
park
and
a
trolley
system
all
appeared
in
short
order;
the
town
soon
even
had
a
zoo.
Today,
a
visit

the
area
reveals
the
Hershey
Medical
Center, Milton Hershey School, and Hershey's Chocolate World

a theme park where visitors are
greeted by a giant Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. All of these things

were made possible because a caramel maker visited the Chicago Exposition of

A. the exposition in Chicago is held once every three years.

B. the theme of the exposition of 1893 was

2

According to the passage, Milton Hershey sold his caramel company in _______.

A. 1894
B. 1900
C. 1904

C. Chocolate had never been manufactured in the United States before Milton Hershey did it.

D. The
