departmental stamp showed that they had been received in good order. But an accompanying letter

be
accepted

the
Department
of
Education unless they have been registered at the Post Office to ensure safe delivery.
”
Will you
please re-mail the forms to the Department, making sure to register them this time?
I
began
to
suspect
that
the
local
school
system
did
not
have
a
monopoly
(
垄断
)
on
incompetence.
(5) As I grew older, I saw that every organization contained a number of persons who could
not do their jobs.

It

Anther
department
controls
the
foods
and
drugs
that
companies
sell.
A
third
department
looks
at
the
places where people work, and then reports any companies that are breaking laws which protect
the health and safety of workers. Of course, new government departments and new
laws cannot
prevent every accident or illness, but they are having some good results. Our workplaces are safer
and cleaner than before. The planes and cars which we use for travel are better. (5) Manufacturers
are thinking more about the safety and health of the people who buy and use their products.

food
styles
”

in
the
United
States.
The United
States
is
traditionally famous for its unchanging diet of meat and potatoes, but now we have a great variety
of food to choose from: various ethnic (

) food, health food, and fast food, in addition to the
traditional
home-cooked
meal.
Ethnic
restaurants
and
supermarkets
are
commonplace
in
the
United
Sates.

Because
the
United
States
is
a
country
of
immigrants
(

),
there
is
an
immense
variety
of
food
styles
and
any
large
American
city
is
filled
with
restaurants
serving
international
cooking.
Many
cities
even
have
ethnic
sections:
Chinatown,
Little
Italy,
or
Germantown. With this vast ethnic choice, we can enjoy food from all over the world. (2) This is a
pleasant thought for those who come here to travel or to work; they can usually find their native
specialties. Because sections of the cities, there are regions, which are well known for certain food
because
of
the
people
who
settled
there.
For
example,
southern
California
has
many
Mexican
restaurants.

Health
food
gained
popularity
when
people
began
to
think
more
seriously
about
the
possible effect of food on their health. The very term
“
health food
”
is ironic because it implies that
there is also
“
unhealthy
”
food. (4) Health food includes natural food with little progressing, that is,
there are no chemicals to help it last longer or to make it taste or look better. Most health food
enthusiasts are vegetarians: they eat no meat; they prefer to get their proteins from other sources,
such as beans, cheese and eggs.
(5) Fast-food restaurants are now expanding rapidly all over the United Sates, where speed is
a very important factor. People usually have a short lunch break or they just do not want to waste
their time eating. Fast-food restaurants are places which take care of hundreds of people in a short
time. There is usually very little waiting, and the food is always cheap. Some examples are burger
and pizza places.

balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from
someone

This
person
was
caught
only
because
she
was
a
drug
user.
When
the
police broke up an illegal drug operation, her name was in the records.
Some
employees
use
the
computer
’
s
power
to
take
revenge
(

on
employers
they
consider
unfair.

Recently,

large
company
fired
an
employee
for
reasons
that
involved
his
personal rather than his professional life. He was its computer-tape librarian. In his last forty days

atmosphere

intense excitement. Games between teams classified as

major football powers
”
attract nationwide
television
audiences

number
in
the
millions.
There
is
a
whole
industry
built
on
the
manufacture
and
sale
of
badges,
pennants,
T-shirts,
blanket,
hats,
and
countless
other
items.
Football and basketball coaches at major universities are paid higher salaries than the presidents of
their institutions. Athletic department budgets are in the millions of dollars.
Black
Americans
are
heavily
overrepresented
in
the
sports
of
baseball,
football,
and
basketball. While blacks comprise about 12 per cent of the country
’
s total population, they make
up
well
over
half
of
most
college
and
professional
football
and
basketball
teams.

It
is
not
unusual to see a basketball game in which all the players on the floor are black.
Foreign visitors --- especially males --- who plan to be in the United States for an extended
period of time will enhance their ability to interact constructively with Americans if they take the
trouble to learn about sports teams that have following in the local area. (5) Knowing something

the

initial impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt
himself qualified, interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel considered this

and

manner
unsuited
for
this
particular
position.

may

They
say
in
the
trade
that

are

really
