The art of translation is a combination of literary skills, acquired and perfected through long,
persistent
practice,
and
the
knowledge
of
grammatical
rules
and
linguistic
principles,
whose
application makes for correctness and exactitude. Translation is the process of good understanding
of
the
original
language
and
proper
conversion
from
the
original
into
another
language.
It
is
usually
composed
of
the
two
stages:
comprehension
and
representation.
Comprehension
of
the
original through the context clue is crucial. It is necessary for us to make a careful analysis of the
grammatical relation and the logical layout of the context. In order to achieve faithfulness of the
original, we must pay attention to two points: Firstly, a correct understanding of the exact meaning
of the difficult words. The meaning of a word is not gained simply from the dictionary or textbook.
The context and collocation have great influence upon the meaning of words. Secondly, we must
make a careful analysis of the grammatical structure and the logical layout of the sentence, as well
as its relation with other parts of the paragraph. Having settled the problem of understanding of
the original, we must try to express it in the target language and have a faithful translation as well
as
a
smooth
version.
Owing
to
the
fact
that
English
and
Chinese
are
two
entirely
different
languages, “faithfulness” does not mean the complete conformation of the superficial phenomena
of
the
parts
of
speech
and word
order.
As
a
rule,
we
could
not
add
or
cross
out
at
random
the
meaning of the original. But with a view to the characteristic of the two languages of English and
Chinese, we could, if necessary, make some supplement and omission in translation.

This course focuses on the progression of American literature, principle literary stages and
the
respective
characteristics,
helping
students
understand
and
appreciate
the
classic
American
literary
writings,
along
with
lecturing
on
the
background
against
which
the
related
works
were
produced.
In
understanding
the
literary
works
the
teacher
should
point
to
the
deeper
meaning,
instruct the students to discuss the language art and social significance of the works, as well as to
introduce the literary theories and the literary commentaries when called for. The first purpose of
the course is to solidify our students’ literary foundation, nourish their humanistic taste, replenish
their
thoughts,
cultivate
their
creative
mind;
the
second
purpose
is
to
improve
the
students’
language
appreciation
level.
Almost
every
successful
foreign
language
learners
hold
that,
extensive reading of the originals is effective to heighten language level, so the final purpose of

This course is a compulsory course offered for the 2
-year English majors for one semest-er
and delivered entirely in English. As an introduction to English linguistics, it focuses on research
subjects,

approaches and achievements in linguistics. It is intended for students to become more
precise in their description and understanding of the English language. The purpose of this course
is to help students understand better about linguistic issues in general and the English language in
particular. In this course, introductory surveys of general linguistics will be covered.

Through
lectures

discussions,

linguistic

process,
standards and approaches of literary translation. Students will learn the techniques and strategies
of producing literary translations that faithfully serve the original and at the same time stand as
works of art in their own right within the linguistic and cultural context of the translation culture.
The course helps students to understand the main literature genres of both English and Chinese.
Students learn to translate idioms, novels, proses, drama and poems. Moreover, the students will
have an opportunity to read and discuss several different translations of one and the same literary
work,

model
translations
