4But the good life can get prettytough. Three monthsago when it
was 30 below, we spent two
miserable days haulingfirewood up the river on a sled. Three months
from now, it will be 95above and we will be cultivating corn, weedin
gstrawberriesand killingchickens. Recently, Sandyand I had to retile
the back roof. Soon Jim, 16 and Emily, 13, the youngest of our four
children,will help me make some long-overdueimprovementson the
outdoortoiletthat supplements ourindoorplumbing when we are
workingoutside. Later this month, we'll spray the orchard, paint
thebarn, plant the gardenand clean the hen house beforethe new
chicksarrive.

and delivers the eggs. There is, as theold sayinggoes, no rest for the
wickedon a place like this -- and not much for the virtuous either.

with preserves, tomatojuice, grapejuice, plums, jams and jellies.
Eventually, the basement floor disappeared under piles of potato
es,squashand pumpkins, and the barn began to fill with applesand
pears. It was amazing.
