Reading Comprehension

(40 points)
Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some

and D. You should decide on the best choice.
Passage 1
Our language, songs, and slang are full of images that spring from the use of cash.
When you hear of someone
“roiling
in the green stuff

, or when someone asks you for a

ten

,
you
know
what
they

re
talking
about.
But
vital
as

greenbacks

and

cold,
hard
cash

may seem to our way of life, one day be outdated. Plastic and microchips
are the
currency of modern banking, and
even those
who now enjoy the feel
of
change in
their
pockets may one day just as attached to a

smart card

.
The automatic teller machine

ATM

has become a feature of American life. Many
banks give their customers ATM cards when they open an account, and some cards users
find the service so convenient that they almost never see the inside of the bank. All you do
is insert your card into a slot and punch in your personal identification number and your
transaction.
The
machine
makes
sure
you
have
enough
in
your
account
to
cover
your
present request, then spits out the cash. Customers like the service because it

s available at
off-hours and because the machines tend to be faster than going inside and waiting for a
human teller. Banks like the machines because they often save money.
When ATMs first appeared, they were set up by individual banks to serve just that
bank

s customers. Now, however, most ATMs are part of networks. Instead of driving to
the ATM at their home branch, most people can now use their cards at ATMs in shopping
malls and supermarkets, or
in
the machines of other banks,
small banks join together to
create
regional
shared
networks,
so
card
holders
can
do
business
anywhere
within
their
region.
And
though
the
concept
is
relatively
new,
two
major
national
networks
have
already made their 30,000 ATMs available to 100 million cardholders.

31. According to the first paragraph, ____ may one day be outdated.

A. cash

B. our languages, songs and slang

C. banks

D. plastic and microchips
32. Many banks give ____ to their customers when they open an account.

A. money

B. cards

C. checks

D. all of the above
33. What do you not do when you get money on ATM?
A.

Insert a card.

B. Punch in transaction.

C. Go inside the bank and wait for the bank teller

D.

Punch in personal identity number

34. Why do customers like the service of ATM?
A.

Because it saves money

B.

Because they can get everything from ATM.
C.

Because it earns money.
D.

Because it is convenient.
35. ATMs were firstly set up by individual banks to serve ____.
A.

B.

D.
