There are three kinds of goals: short- term,medium-range and long-term goals.
Short- range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we

TEXT B
There
are
two
factors
which
determine
an
individual's
intelligence.
The
first is
the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being
more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with,
an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities
to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual

the sort of
environment
in
which
he
is
reared.
If
an
individual
is
handicapped
envionmentally
,it
is
likely
that
his
brain
will
fail
to
develop
and
he
will
never
attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individual's intellingence can

be
demonstrated
by
the
case
history
of
the
identical
twins,
Peter
and
Mark
X.
Being
identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes
were
the
same.
When
the
twins
were
three
months
old
,
their
parents
died,
and
they
were

Mark's
I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points
higher
than
his

Given
equal
opportunities
,
the
twins
,
having
identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.
selection can best be titled_________.
ing Your Intelligence

Case of Peter and Mark
the brain Influences Intelligence
beststatement of the main idea of this passage is that _____.

brain a person is born with is improtant in determining his intelligence

the
conclusion
that
_______.

Despit
occasional
alarms,
the
country
escaped
any
postwar
depression and lived in a state of boom. A n economic survey of the year 1955,
a typical year of the 1950’s, may be typical as illustrating the rapid economic
growth of the decade. The national output was value at 10 percent above that of

an
ominous
echo
of

TEXT D
In
the
case
of
mobile
phones,
change
is
everything.
Recent
research
indicates
that
the mobile phone is changing not only our culture, but our very bodies as well.
First.
Let’s
talk
about
culture.
The
difference
between
the
mobile
phone
and
its
parent, the fixed-line phone, you get whoever answers it.
This
has
several
implications.
The
most
common
one,
however,
and
perhaps
the
thing
th
at has changed our culture forever, is the “meeting” influence. People no
longer need to make firm plans about when and where to meet. Twenty years ago,
a Friday night would need to be arranged in advance. You needed enough time to
allow everyone to get from their place of work to the first meeting place. Now,
however, a night out can be arranged on the run. It is no longer “see you there
at 8”, but “text me around 8 and we’ll see where we all are”.

Texting changes people as well. In their paper, “insights
into the Social and
Psychological
Effects
of
SMS
Text
Messaging”,
two
British
researchers
distinguished between two types of mobile phone users: the “talkers” and the
“texters”
-those who prefer voice to text message and those who prefer text to
voice.
Th
ey found that the mobile phone’s individuality and privacy gave texters the
ability to express a whole new outer personality. Texters were likely to report
that
their
family
would
be
surprised
if
they
were
to
read
their
texts.
This
suggests
that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one
familiar to those who knew them well.
