Undergraduates are searching for identity and meaning and, like the rest of us, they
are torn by idealism of service on the one hand, and on the hand, the temptation to
retreat into a world that never rises above self-interests.

life.

(1) That faith is based on a conviction that the vitality of the United States, its creative
and diverse cultural life, its staggeringly inventive economy, its national security and
the robustness of its democratic institutions owe much to the quality of its institutions
of higher education.

The Virtues of Ambition

One can, after all, be ambitious for the public good, for the alleviation of suffering,

the
enlightenment
of
mankind,
though
there
are
some
who
say
that
these
are
precisely the ambitious people most to be distrusted.
