Today
the
official
language
of
the
United
States
and
most
of
Canada
is
English.
However, French almost became the official language because of a war.
The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. The name of this
war is not accurate because the war was actually between England and France. The
Indians fought on the side of the French.
France and England were trying to gain control of North America. France held
Canada,
and
England
held
part
of
what
is
now
the
United
States.
However,
France
tried
to expand its land by moving southward into New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and
Virginia.
When
the
French
built
a
fort
on
the
Ohio
River,
the
residents
in
Virginia
sent George Washington to attack the fort in 1754. However, the French defeated
Washington.
The French, aided by the Indians, outsmarted the English and won many early
battles.
Later,
the
British
began
to
do
well
against
the
French.
In
the
final
battle
in
Quebec,
Canada,
General
Wolfe
of
England
faced
General
Montcalm
from
France.
Both
generals
died
in
this
battle,
but
the
English
outlasted
the
French
and
won
the
battle.
Thus, most of North America today has the English culture and language.

The
5
questions
or
unfinished
statements
are numbered 36 through 40.
All
our
dreams
have
something
to
do
with
our
emotions,
fears,
wishes,
needs
and
memories. But something on the “outside” may affect what we dream. If a person
is hungry, or tired, or
cold, his
dreams may include a feeling of
this kind. If the
covers
on
your
body,
such
as
a
quilt
(被子)
or
a
blanket
(毯子)
,
have
slipped
off
your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow.
So
what
you
dream
usually
comes
from
something
that
has
effect
on
you
while
you
are
sleeping and it may
also use the wishes and
interests you
have now.
This is why
children are likely to dream of fairies, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers
of their families, and prisoners of freedom.
There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what
we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams is not affected
by everyone, but it offers an interesting way to look at dreams. They believe that
dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words, a
dream is a way of having your wishes carried out.

A) Emotions.
B) Memories.
C) Feeling hungry.
D) Wishes.

enjoys sleeping

afraid of
