Passage One

Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he
noticed
he
was
always
tired
and
was
losing
weight
fast.
Diagnosed
with
diabetes(

尿病
), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin(
胰岛素
) three times a day
for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if
that weren't bad enough, he had no health insurance.
After
a
month
of
feeling
upset,
Thomas
decided
he'd
better
find
a
way
to
fight
back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed
himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created , a free online
community
for
diabetics
and
their
loved
ones

a
place
where
over
1,100
people
share
personal stories, information, and resources.
Jason
Swencki

s
son,
Kody,
was
diagnosed
with
type
diabetes
at
six.
Father

so excited, writing to kids from all over,
volunteers.
Kody
is
anything
but
alone:
Diabetes
is
now
the
seventh
leading
cause
of
death
in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being
diagnosed at younger ages.
These
days,
Thomas's
main
focus
is
his
charity
(慈善机构)
,
Fight
It,
which
provides medicines and supplies to people

who can't afford a
diabetic's huge expenses. has raised about $$23,000

in products and
in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in
the Caribbean.
Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours
a week to his cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables.
diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure,
Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar's original members.
person I know saying people need help now.

A.

He needs to go to the doctor every day.
B.

He studies the leading cause of diabetes
C.

He has a positive attitude to this disease.

his
website

Passage Two
Ask
someone
what
they
have
done
to
help
the
environment
recently
and
they
will
almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of
course.
However,
being
forced
to
recycle
often
means
we
already
have
more
material
than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the
greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so
much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now
makes up a third of a typical household

s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets
nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for
example,
is
running
out
of
it
for
carrying
this
unnecessary
waste.
If
such
packaging
is
burnt,
it
gives
off
greenhouse
gases
which
go
on
to
cause
the
greenhouse
effect.
Recycling
helps,
but
the
process
itself
uses
energy.
The
solution
is
not
to
produce
such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many
supermarkets
encourage
customers
to
buy
more
than
they
need.
However,
a
few
of
them
are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue , encouraging customers to
reuse their plastic bags, for example.
But
this
is
not
just
about
supermarkets.
It
is
about
all
of
us.
We
have
learned
to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something
unpackaged
is
of
poor
quality.
This
is
especially
true
of
food.
But
is
also
applies
to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than
necessary.
There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise
just
how
much
unnecessary
material
are
collecting.
We
need
to
face
the
wastefulness
of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
61. What does the underlined phrase

over- consumption

refer to
A. Using too much packaging.
B. Recycling too many wastes.
C. Making more products than necessary.
D. Having more material than is needed.
62. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show _______.
A. the tendency of cutting household waste
B. the increase of packaging recycling
C. the rapid growth of super markets
Overuse
63. According to the text, recycling ______.
A. helps control the greenhouse effect
B. means burning packaging for energy
C. is the solution to gas shortage
D. leads to a waste of land
64. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4
A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D. Other products are better packaged than food.
65. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B. Needless material is mostly recycled.
C. People like collecting recyclable waste.
D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.

Rae
Armantrout,
who
has
been
a
poetry
professor
at
the
University
of
California
San Diego(UCSD) for two decades, has won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in the poetry
category for her most recent book,

Versed

.

I

m delighted and amazed at how much media recognition that the Pulitzer
brings, as compared to even the National Book Critics Award, which I was also
surprised and delighted to win,

said Armantrout.

For
a
long
time,
my
writing
has
been
just
below
the
media
radar,
and
to
have
this kind of attention, suddenly, with my 10th book, is really surprising.

Armantrout, a native Californian, received her bachelor

s degree at UC
Berkeley, where she studied with noted poet Denise Levertov, and her master

s in
creative writing from San Francisco State University. She is a founding member of
Language Poets, a group in American poetry that analyzes the way language is used
and raises questions to make the reader think.
In March, she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for

Versed.

This
book
has
gotten
more
attention,

Armantrout
said,

but
I
don

t
feel
as if it

s better.

The first half of

Versed

focuses on the dark forces taking hold of the
United States as it fought the war against Iraq. The second half looks at the dark
forces
casting
a
shadow
over
her
own
life
after
Armantrout
was
diagnosed
with
cancer
in 2006.
Armantrout was shocked to learn she had won the Pulitzer but many of her
colleagues
were
not.

Rae
Armantrout

a
unique
voice
in
American
poetry,

said
Seth Lerer, head of Arts and Humanities at UCSD.

Versed

by
the

University
Press,

appear
in

Passage Two
Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While
scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems
can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices
themselves.
University
of
Missouri(MU)
researchers
are
developing
a
nuclear
energy
source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.

To
provide
enough
power,
we
need
certain
methods
with
high

density(

)

said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering
at
MU.

The
radioisotope(
放射性同位素
)
battery
can
provide
power
density
that
is
much higher than chemical batteries.

Kwon
and
his
research
team
have
been
working
on
building
a
small
nuclear
battery,
presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro /
nanoelectromechanreal systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause
concerns, Kwon said they are safe.

People hear the word

nuclear

and think of something very dangerous,

he
said,

However,
nuclear
power
sources
have
already
been
safely
powering
a
variety
of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.

His
new
idea
is
not
only
in
the
battery

s
size,
but
also
in
its
semiconductor(

导体
).
Kwon

s
battery
uses
a
liquid
semiconductor
rather
than
a
solid
semiconductor.

The
key
part
of
using
a
radioactive
battery
is
that
when
you
harvest
the
energy,
part
of
the
radiation
energy
can
damage
the
lattice
structure(
晶体结构
)
of
the
solid
semiconductor,

Kwon said,

By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can
minimize that problem.

Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director
of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the
future, they hope to increase the battery

s power, shrink its size and try with
various
other
materials.
Kwon
said
that
battery
could
be
thinner
than
the
thickness
of human hair.
61. Which of the following is true of Jae Kwon
A. He teaches chemistry at MU.?
B. He developed a chemical battery.
C. He is working on a nuclear energy source.

A. get rid of the radioactive waste??
B. test the power of nuclear batteries.
C. decrease the size of nuclear batteries
D. reduce the damage to lattice structure.
64. According to Jae Kwon, his nuclear battery _______.
A. uses a solid semiconductor???????
B. will soon replace the present ones.
C. could be extremely thin??????????
D. has passed the final test.

第四套模拟题英语阅读

In the kitchen of my mother

s houses there has always been a wooden stand
(木架)
with a small notepad
(记事本)
and a hole for a pencil.
I

m
looking
for
paper
on
which
to
note
down
the
name
of
a
book
I
am
recommending
to my mother. Over forty years since my earliest memories of the kitchen pad and
pencil,
five
houses
later,
the
current
paper
and
pencil
look
the
same
as
they
always
did. Surely it can

t be the same pencil The pad is more modern, but the wooden
stand is definitely the original one.

I

m
just
amazed
you
still
have
the
same
stand
for
holding
the
pad
and
pencil
after
all
these
year.

I
say
to
her,
walking
back
into
the
living- room
with
a
sheet
of paper and the pencil.

You still use a pencil. Can

t you afford a pen

My mother replies a little sharply.

It works perfectly well. I

ve always
kept
the
stand
in
the
kitchen.
I
never
knew
when
I
might
want
to
note
down
an
idea,
and I was always in the kitchen in these days.

Immediately I can picture her, hair wild, blue housecoat covered in flour, a
wooden spoon in one hand, the pencil in the other, her mouth moving silently. My
mother smiles and says,

One day I was cooking and watching baby Pauline, and I
had a brilliant thought, but the stand was empty. One of the children must have
taken the paper. So I just picked up the breadboard and wrote it all down on the
back.
It
turned
out
to
be
a
real
breakthrough
for
solving
the
mathematical
problem
I was working on.

This
story

which happened before
I was
born

reminds
me
how
extraordinary
my
mother
was,
and
is
also
a
gifted
mathematician.
I
feel
embarrassed
that
I
complain
about not having enough child-free time to work. Later, when my mother is in the
bathroom,
I
go
into
her
kitchen
and
turn over
the
breadboards.
Sure
enough, on
the
back
of
the
smallest
one,
are
some
penciled
marks
I
recognize
as
mathematics.
Those
symbols
have
traveled

through
fifty
years,
rooted
in
the
soil
of
a

(看不到的)
exhibits at every meal.
56

Why
has
the
author

s
mother
always
kept
the
notepad
and
pencil
in
the
kitchen
A

To leave messages. B

To list her everyday tasks.
C

To note down maths problems. D

To write down a flash of inspiration.
57. What is the author

s original opinion about the wooden stand
A. It has great value for the family.
B. It needs to be replaced by a better one.
C. It brings her back to her lonely childhood.
D .It should be passed on to the next generation.
58. The author feels embarrassed for .
A. blaming her mother wrongly.
B. giving her mother a lot of trouble.
C. not making good use of time as her mother did.
D. not making any breakthrough in her field.
59. What can be inferred from the last paragraph

C. The author had little time to play when young.
D. The marks on the breadboard have disappeared.
60. In the author

s mind ,her mother is .

A. strange in behavior. B. keen on her research.
C. fond of collecting old things. D. careless about her appearance.
Passage Two
To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human.
Common sense is not all that common.
Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse
These three popular misquotes(
戏谑的引语
)are meant to be jokes, and yet they
tell us a lot about human nature .To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part
of
being
human,
but
it
seems
that
most
people
don

t
want
to
accept
the
responsibility
for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do .The original quote about
human
nature went
like
this:

To
err
is human,
to forgive,
divine(
神圣的
).

This
saying mirrors an deal people should be forgiving of others

mistakes. Instead,
we tend to do the opposite

find someone else to pass the blame on to. However,
taking
responsibility
for
something
that
went
wrong
is
a
making
of
great
maturity.
Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having
a
good
general
plan
that
will
make
things
work
well,
and
it
also
means
staying
with
the plan. Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm,
but
you
leave
the
umbrella
home
when
you
hear
a
weather
forecast
for
sunshine

Common
sense
does
not
seem
to
be
common
for
large
organizations,
because
there
are
so
many
things
going
on
that
one
person
cannot
be
in
charge
of
everything.
People
say
that
in a large company,

the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.

And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is
like creating a work of art One of the common problems with making excuses is that
people, especially young people. get the idea that it

s okay not to be totally
honest
all
the
time.
There
is
a
corollary(
直接推论
)to
that:
if
good
excuse
is

good

even if it isn

t honest, then where is the place of the truth
61. According to tile passage, which of following seems the most human
A. To search for truth

B. To achieve one

s ideal
C.
To
make
fun
of
others

mistakes

D.
To
criticize
others
for
one

s
own
error.
62

According to the author, what is a sign of a man

s maturity
A

Doing things his own way.
B

Bearing responsibility for his mistakes.
C

Making as few mistakes as possible

D

Thinking seriously about his wrongdoing.
63

Which of the following is NOT based on common sense
A

A man tries to take charge of everything in a large company.
B

A student goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather.
C

A company

s next move follows a good plan

D

A lawyer acts on fine judgments

64. What is the author

s opinion about a good excuse
A. Making a good excuse is sometimes a better policy.
B. Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas.
C. A good excuse is as rewarding as honesty.
D. Bitter truth is better than a good excuse.
65. What would be the best title for his passage
A. A Mirror of Human Nature B. To Blame or to Forgive
C. A Mark of Maturity D. Truth or Excuse

Passage One
My parents were in a huge argument, and I was really upset about it. I didn

t know who I should talk with about how I was feeling. So I asked Mom to allow me
to stay the night at my best friend

s house. Though I knew I wouldn

t tell her
about my parents

situation, I was looking forward to getting out of the house.
I was in the middle of packing up my things when suddenly the power went out in
the neighborhood. Mom came to tell me that I should stay with my grandpa until the
power came back on.
I
was
really
disappointed
because
I
felt
that
we
did
not
have
much
to
talk
about.
But I knew he would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room and told
him that I

d stay with him until the power was restored. He was quite happy and
said,

Great opportunity.

What is

I asked.

and
dad,
and
what
we

going
to

with
ourselves
now that we

re in the situation we are in.

But we can

t do anything about it, Grandpa,

I said, surprised that here
was someone with whom I could share my feelings and someone who was in the same

boat

as I was
And that

s how the most unbelievable friendship between my grandfather and
me started. Sitting there in the dark, we talked about our feeling and fears of
life---from
how
fast
things
change,
to
how
they
sometimes
don

t
change
fast
enough.
That night, because the power went out, I found a new friend, with whom I could
safely talk about all my fears and pains, whatever they may be.
Suddenly,
the
lights
all
came
back
on.

Well,

he
said,

I
guess
that
means
you

ll want to go now. I really like our talk. I hope the power will go out every

house D.

Passage Two
The

meals
on
holidays

gone.
Enter
the
Red
Hat
Society

a
group
holding
the
belief
that
old
ladies
should
have fun.

My
grandmothers
didn

t
do
anything
but
keep
house
and
serve
everybody.
They
were
programmed
to
do
that,

said
Emils
Comette,
head
of
a
chapter
of
the
7-year-old
Red Hat Society.
While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have
sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning
50 is the baby boomers(
生育高峰期出生的人
), and the same people who refused their
parents

way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.
If you take into consideration feminism(
女权主义
), a bit of spare money, and
better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable(

然的
). In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple(
紫色的
) clothes,
while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.

The
organization
took
the
idea
from
a
poem
by
Jenny
Joseph
that
begins:

When
I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesn

t go,

said
Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to
wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.

The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for
someone
else,

Cooper
said.

Women
feel
so
ashamed
and
sorry
when
they
do
something
for
themselves.

This
is
why
chapters
are
discouraged
from
raising
money
or
doing
anything useful.

We

re a ladies

play group. It couldn

t be more simple,

added Cooper

s assistant Joe Heywood.

The underlined word

chapter

in paragraph 2 means __________.

A

C

are enjoying a good life with plenty of money to spend

D
