Unit 3 Inventions
Teaching Objectives:
In this unit, students will listen to a speech on inventions that have changed the
world in the Listening Task section and a conversation on the QWERTY Keyboard in
Real
World
Listening
1.
In
Real
World
Listening
2,
students
will
listen
to
a
radio
interview on the subject of failed inventions. Students will be required to do research
on inventions, failed and successful, in the Real World Speaking and Project sections.
Teaching Difficulties:
1.
Students
may
encounter
some
difficult
words
while
listening,
and
they
are
required to figure out the contextual meanings of these words. It takes time and
the instructor has to take pains to gradually acquaint students the skill of how to
understand unfamiliar words while listening.
2.
Students may come across difficulties of taking down notes while listening. The
instructor has to pause while listening to tell the students how to jot down brief
notes in process of listening comprehension.
Teaching Procedures:
1.
Warming-up exercise
Students are asked to think of other inventions that have changed daily life. They
are required to brainstorm with the class and make a list on the blackboard. The
instructors will elicit comments about how these objects changed people

Dealing with Background Noise
Listening
in
real
life
is
very
different
from
listening
in
a
language
lab.
There
won
’
t
be
headphones
or
studio
produced
high-quality
sounds,
but
background
noises that distract us from hearing every word directly. When we are listening to
a speech or a lecture, it is impossible to ask the speaker to stop and repeat what
they
’
ve said. In cases like this, it is often useful to guess from the context.
Listening Activities:
1
)
First
listening.
Students
are
asked
to
listen
to
the
whole
recording
and
see
whether or not they can guess the answers correctly. Then they are asked to
write down the effect of each of the three inventions.
2
)
Second listening. Students are asked to listen to Part 1 and choose the correct
picture that shows how the ancient Egyptian clock works as is
described in
the
program.
In
Part
2,
Professor
Murray
will
talk
about
refrigerators.
Students are asked to listen carefully and complete the fact sheet. In Part 3,
Students are asked to listen to the material
and put the correct letters in the
boxes.

Real World Listening 1

Describe.
All
the
following

are
asked to listen to Part 1 of the dialogue, find the errors and rewrite the sentences
to make them correct.

Get the Main Ideas. Students are required to listen to Part 2 & 3 of the dialogue
and choose the best answers. There can be more than one answer to each question.
