executive summary

this research provides a rigorous analysis of the current
facilities and services of hkue library. the overall objective
aims at helping the library discover how it can better meet the
needs of students.

the study methodologies are exploratory and descriptive
research. this study undertook a paper-survey of 32 students;
carried out a wide ranging program of desk research;
observation; carried out focus groups with students.

the study yielded the following clear results:

the facilities and services of hkue library in its current
situation are not positive. there are divergent views in the
survey. most of the students not satisfy the services and
facilities of the library. we sum up the dominant views.

the major areas of weakness arethatthe area of library is small,
students do not satisfy the

librarian service, the library collection is not adequate,
computer printer are not enough andthe opening hour of
library is not serious problem in school library
has existed for years. this study makes a number of practical
suggestions about the weakness.

the study also investigates the fact that the analysis
conducted has limitations. some of the limitations include: - - -

the library user not enough to do a detail research.

the library is small, so do not have an adequate amount of
funds.

different views and interpretation between the group mates in
the study. study only can measure the past, not the future.

it lacks of some advanced technology to do the research.
some contradictory information is encountered.

introduction

hkue is a hong kong based educational institute founded by a
group of professionals with dedication to education. being a
private school registered with the education manpower bureau
of the hksar government, asia management education centre
aims to provide students with quality education.

therefore, hkue provides a library for students, staff and
lectures of amec, acec and utas to have an information
resource service. the services in the library include printing
and photocopying service, self-study counters, locker
borrowing service and borrowing books service. moreover,
there are more than 1000 books with different types of book in
the library for the users to find the information that they need.

however, the using rate of hkue library is decreasing in
recently month.

consequently, we would like to conduct a research project to
find out the reason why the using rate of hkue library is
decreasing and give some recommendations at the end of the
project. moreover, the main purpose of this research project is
finding some inadequate facilities and services of our school
library through collecting the hkue school library users?
opinions, to improve the hkue library?s quality and provide
better service for the users of hkue library.

research methodology and schedule

the overall objective helps the library to identify how it can
better meet the needs of students. our research methodologies
are exploratory and descriptive research. our research will
focus on why the library of hkue has few students to visit.

our assignment is to use methodology of a paper-survey of
existing library users and non-users (student). as this method,
we ask for 32 students in hkue for doing questionnaire which
has 10 questions and closely connected with our objectives.
these questions are ensured enough quality. also we will find
outwhat services and facilities the advanced libraries will
provide. moreover, we will refer some library surveys of hong
kong?s university. we will not conduct a pilot because the size
of our survey is actually as small as a pilot.

also, we observe the situation of the library with some days.
the time of observation is 30 minutes per day.
