1The Lion and the Mouse

Lion was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face.

Rising up in anger, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the Mouse piteously entreated,
saying:

you
would
only
spare
my
life,
I would
be
sure
to repay
your
kindness.
The
Lion
laughed and let him go.

It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong
ropes to the ground.

The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came up, and gnawed the rope with his teeth, and setting him
free,
exclaimed:

ou
ridiculed
the
idea
of
my
ever
being
able
to
help
you,
not
expecting
to
receive from me any repayment of your favour; but now you know that it is possible for even a
Mouse to confer benefits on a Lion.

Little friends may prove great friends.

said

off she

THE MISCHIEVOUS DOG
There was once a Dog who used to snap at people and bite them without any
provocation,
and
who
was
a
great
nuisance
to
every
one
who
came
to
his
master's house. So his

master fastened a bell round his neck to warn people of his presence. The Dog
was
very
proud
of
the
bell,
and
strutted
about
tinkling
it
with
immense
satisfaction. But an old

dog came up to him and said,
, my
friend. You don't
think, do you, that your
bell was given you as a reward of merit?
On the contrary,
it is a badge of disgrace.

Notoriety is often mistaken for fame.
