Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second
type of house won an Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects.

Located
on
the
shore
of Sullivan's
Island
off
the
coast
of
South
Carolina,
the
award- winning
cube-shaped
beach
house
was
built
to
replace
one
smashed
to
pieces
by
Hurricane
(飓风)
Hugo 10 years ago. Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolina's shoreline were
poorly
constructed,
and
enforcement
of
building
rules
wasn't
strict,
according
to
architect
Ray
Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. Soon after Hugo, all new shoreline houses
are
required
to
meet
stricter,
better-enforced
rules.
The
new
beach
house
on
Sullivan's
Island
should be able to withstand a Level 3 hurricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometers per
hour.

At
first
sight,
the
house
on
Sullivan's
Island
looks
anything
but
hurricane- proof.
Its
redwood
shell
makes
it resemble “a
large
party
lantern
(
灯笼
)” at
night,
according
to
one observer.
But
looks can be misleading. The house's wooden frame is reinforced with long steel rods to give it
extra strength.

To further protect the house from hurricane damage. Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground
on
timber
pilings

long,
slim
wood
pieces
anchored
deep
in
the
sand.
Pilings
might
appear
insecure,
but
they
are
strong
enough
to
support
the
weight
of
the
house.
They
also
raise
the
house above storm waves. The pilings allow the waves to run under the house instead of running
into
it.
'These
waves
come
ashore
at
terrible
speeds
and
cause
most
of
the
damage
done
to
beach-
front buildings,” said Huff.

Huff
designed
the
timber
pilings
to
be
partially
hidden
by
the
house's
ground-to-roof
shell.
“The shell ma
sks the pilings so that the house doesn't look like it's standing with its pant legs (

) pulled up,” said Huff. In the event of a storm, the shell should break apart and let the waves
rush under the house, the architect explained.

1

After
the
Hurricane
Hugo,
new
houses
built
along
South
Carolina's
shore
line
are
required .

A. to be easily reinforced
B. to meet stricter building standards

C. to look smarter in design
D. to be designed in the shape of cubes

2

Why is the award-winning beach house strong and hurricane-proof?

A. It is in the shape of a shell. B. It is made of redwood.

C. It is strengthened by steel rods. D. It is built with timber and concrete.

3

What's the purpose of Huff raising the house 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings?

A. To
anchor
stronger
pilings
deep
in
the
sand.
B. To
prevent
water
from
rushing
into
the
house.

C. To withstand peak winds of about 200 km/hr.
D. To make the house look more hurricane-
proof.

4

According the last paragraph, the main function of the shell is .

A. to give the house a better appearance
B. to strengthen the pilings of the house

C. to protect the wooden frame of the house
D. to slow down the speed of the big waves

【答案】

1

B

2

Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple
as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes
you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.

Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he
would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the
lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life.

But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of
the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His
thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk
was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he
threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He
reached
the
fence,
raised
himself
up
and
then
began
dragging
himself
along
the
fence,
firmly
determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided.
With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then
to walk by himself and then to run.

He
began
to
walk

then
run

Madison
Square Garden,
this
young
man who
was

expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run-this determined
young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.

A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one's self, Glenn Cunningham
continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce

when
all
difficulties
are

the
degree
that

the
preferable option.

If
you're
a
book
lover

you
have
a
pile
of
books
on
your
bedside

or
a
bookshelf
in
your
library with a“to read”sign on it

Yet you can't stop yourself from adding to the pile

This can
lead to feelings of guilt over your new purchases

But I'm here to tell you to stop worrying

What you have is an antilibrary

and it's a very good thing

The term comes from writer
Umberto
Eco

He
is
the
owner
of
a
large
personal
library

He
separates
visitors
into
two
groups

those who react with“Wow! What a library you have! How many of these books have
you read?”and the others who get the point that a private library is not something to show off
but a research too1

Read books are far less valuable than unread ones

Indeed

the more you
know

the larger the rows of unread books

Let us call this collection an antilibrary

If you think you already know everything about a subject

you're cutting yourself off from a
stream
of
information
at
an
artificial
point

So
a
growing
library
of
books
you
haven't
read
means you're consistently curious about the unknown

And that attitude is a great foundation
for a lifelong love of 1earning

So don't feel guilt over your unread books

Those books will be there for you when you do
want them

and as you build your library of read and unread books

you can start using it as
you
would
use
a
bigger

Certain

Or
you

find
that

book
you
bought
five
years
ago
has
special
relevance
today

Letting the role of books evolve in your life is a healthy sign of curiosity

That's good for
you and good for the world around you

1

What does the underlined word“antilibrary”in Paragraph 2 re
fer to?

A. Feelings of guilt over new books

B. A pile of books on the bookshelf

C. The collection of unread books

D. A large personal library

2

According to the author

more unread books mean________

A. your wrong lifelong learning attitude
B. you limit yourself from the unknown

C. your have no interest in the new world
D. your strong desire about new information

3

What's the author's attitude towards having an antilibrary?

A. Favorable

B. Doubtful

C. Ambiguous

D. Contradictory

4

What can we know from the last paragraph?

A. Curiosity is a sign of high IQ

B. Books are the ladder in our life

C. Unread
books
are
surely
relevant
to
the
present

D. We
should

We want our children to succeed, in school and, perhaps even more importantly, in life. But the
paradox(
悖论
) is that our children can only truly succeed if they first learn how to fail. Consider
the finding that world-class figure skaters fall over more often in practice than low-level figure
skaters. At first sight this
seems contradictory. Why are the really good skaters falling over the
most?

The
reason
is
actually
quite
simple.
Top
skaters
are
constantly
challenging
themselves
in
practice, attempting jumps that stretch their limitations. This is why they fall over so often, but it
is precisely why they learn so fast. Lower-level skaters have a quite different approach. They are
always attempting jumps they can already do very easily, remaining within their comfort zone.
This
is
why
they
don't
fall
over.
In
a
superficial
sense,
they
look
successful,
because
they
are
always on their feet. The truth, however, is that by never failing, they never progress.

What
is
true
of
skating
is
also
true
of
life.
James
Dyson
worked
through
5,126
failed
prototypes(
原型
) for his dual cyclone vacuum before coining up with the design that made his
fortune.
These
failures
were
essential
to
the
pathway
of
learning.
As
Dyson
put
it:
“You
can't
develop new technology unless you test new ideas and learn when things go wrong. Failure is
essential to invention.”

In healthcare, however, things are very different. Clinicians don't like to admit to failure, partly
because
they
have
healthy egos(
自我
)(particularly
the senior
doctors)
and
partly
because
they
fear litigation(
诉讼
). The consequence is that instead of learning from failure, healthcare often
covers up failure. The direct consequence is that the same mistakes are repeated. According to
the
Journal of Patient Safety
, 400,000 people die every year in American hospitals alone due to
preventable error. Until healthcare learns to respond positively to failure, things will not improve.

But
let
us
return
to
children.
One
of
the
major
mistakes
in
education
in
the
1970s
was
the
attempt to equip children with confidence by giving them lots of successes

setting the bar very
low

.
The
consequence
was
that
the
ego
of
kids
became
bound
up
with
success,
and
they
became unable to take risks and collapsed as soon as they hit a proper challenge.

We
need
to
flip(
翻转
)
this
approach.
In
a
complex
world,
failure
is
inevitable.
It
is
those
individuals
and
institutions
that
have
the
flexibility
to
face
up
to
failure,
learn
the lessons
and
adapt which eventually excel(
突出
).

1

The question raised in the first paragraph is to ________.

A. open up a discussion on the topic B. analyze the reason for success

C. express the author's opposition D. doubt the abilities of the top skaters

Which of the following is the structure of the passage?

A.

B.

C.

D.

A

(2)
考查文章结构。第一段提出中心论点 并以滑冰运动员为例引出第二段。第三段
James
Dyson
为正面例子证明:成 功是建立失败的基础上的。而第四和第五两段分别以医疗和
20
世纪七十年代的儿童教育为反例 证明:不经历失败就不会获得成功和提高。最后一段再次
强调中心论点。故选
A

(3)
考查主旨大意。文章第一段即提出中心论点:
the paradox
(悖论)
is that our children can
only
truly
succeed
if
they
first
learn
how
to
fail

Scientists
have
been
studying
how
people
use
money
for
long.
Now
they're
finding
some
theories may apply to one group of monkeys.

Researchers
recently
taught
six
monkeys
how
to
use
money.
They
gave
the
monkeys
small
metal disks(
圆片
) that could be used like cash and showed them some yummy apple pieces. The
monkeys soon figured out that if they gave one of the disks to a scientist, they'd receive a piece
of apple in return.

If you think that is all the monkeys can figure out, you are wrong. Two researchers, Jake and
Allison, acted as apple sellers in the experiments. The monkeys were tested one at a time and had
12 disks to spend in each experiment. Jake always showed the monkeys one apple piece, while
Allison always showed two pieces. But that's not necessarily what they gave the monkeys. The
number of apple pieces given for a disk was determined at random.

Experiment One: Allison showed two pieces of apples but gave both pieces only half the time.
The other half, she took one piece away and gave the monkey just the remaining piece. Jake, on
the other hand, always gave exactly what he showed: one piece for each disk. The monkeys chose
to trade more with Allison.

Experiment Two: Allison continued to sometimes gave two pieces and sometimes one piece.
But
now,
half
the
time,
Jake
gave
the
one
apple
piece
he
was
showing,
and
half
the
time
he
added a bonus. Guess what? The monkeys chose to trade more with Jake.

In
the
first
experiment,
the
monkeys
correctly
figured
out
that
if
they
traded
with
Allison,
they'd
end
up with
more
treats.
In
the
second
one,
when
a
monkey received
two
pieces
from
Jake, it seemed like again. When Allison gave the monkey only one piece instead of the two she
showed,
it
seemed
like
a
loss.
The
monkeys
preferred
trading
with
Jake
because
they'd
rather
take a chance of seeming to win than seeming to lose.

We also sometimes make silly business decisions just to avoid the feeling that we're getting less,
even when were not. Would you have made the same choices?

1

What conclusion might experts draw from the first experiment?

A. The monkeys show certain business sense.
B. Business theories can apply to all monkeys.

C. People are smarter in terms of finance. D. It's easy to teach monkeys how to trade.

2

What does a bonus in paragraph 5 refer to?

A. A metal disk.
B. An apple piece.
C. A chance.
D. A coin.

3

Why did the monkeys choose to trade more with Jake in the second experiment?

A. Because Jake always gave them two apple pieces.
B. Because the apple pieces from Jake
were yummy.

C. Because they didn't like the feeling of losing.
D. Because they get more apple pieces from
Jake.

4

What could be the best title for the passage?

A. People's Business Decision: Lose or Gain?
B. Moneky's Business Sense: Smart or Silly?

C. Shopping for Bargain: Same or different?
D. Disk for Apple: Who to Trade with?

【答案】

1

A

2

Mexico sites on an island plateau (

a constant concern for people who live there.

In April, the country took a decisive step toward improving air quality by enacting a temporary
ban on private and Federal vehicles in the city. The rule forbids people from driving in the city
one day each week and one Saturday each month. Electric vehicles, government service vehicles,
public transport options and school buses are not included in the ban.

Mexico City isn't the first urban center to be involved in car-free living. But the ban is more
than an awareness-raiser. It was enacted with the direct aim of solving air pollution. In March, the
city sank into a deep brown haze of smog when the pollution levels passed the 200 mark. The city
ordered some 1.1m of the area's 4.7m cars off the streets and also offered free bus and subway
rides.

Mexico City's temporary vehicle ban raises questions about the best ways to improve urban air

A. Raised the number of public vehicles. B. Offered free bus and subway rides.

C. Introduced more travel options.
D. Encouraged citizens to leave the city.

What may contribute to improving the air quality in Mexico?

A. Alternate-day rules. B. Tax rises. C. Congestion charge. D. The rainy season.
