This is what True Love is all about:
It
w
as
a
busy
morning,
approximately
8:30
a.m.,
when
an
elderly
gentleman
in
his
80's
arrived
to
have
stitches
removed
from
his
thumb.
He
stated
that
he
was
in
a
hurry
as
he
had
an
appointment
at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone
would to able to see him. I saw him look at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with
another patient, I would evaluate his wound.

On exam, it was well healed, so I talked
to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, we began to engage in conversation. I asked him if he had
another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no,
that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.

I then inquired as
to
her
health.
He
told
me
that
she
had
been
there
for
a
while
and
that
she
was
a
victim
of
Alzheimer'
s Disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer
knew
who
he
was,
that
she
had
not
recognized
him
in
five
years
now.
I
was
surprised,
and
asked
him,
He smiled as he patted my hand and said,
I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,
of love I want in my life.
True
love
is
neither
physical,
nor
romantic.
True
love
is
an
acceptance
of
all
that
is,
has
been,
will be, and will not be.
Gifting a Homeless Man A Little Something He

Dropped

He was a man I assumed to be homeless, because in the freezing Michigan winter, you could
spot
him
on
his
bike,
with
a
few
small
bags
of
cans,
braving
the
icy
weather
to
stop
at
the
store.
The thing that set him apart from the few other homeless in our area, were his dogs. He had two
big,
meek,
but
beautiful
dogs
that
accompanied
him
everywhere
he
went.
I
noticed
this,
and
thought,
what a good man, to care for those dogs, even when he has trouble caring for himself. The dogs
were
not
malnourished,
or
beaten
down
looking,
though
clearly
they
hated
the
below
freezing
temps

as much as he did. One day, I had an extra 12 dollars, and I stalked him a bit, as he noticed
my car, and clearly not knowing me, got skittish. I managed to corner him in a parking lot, and
told him he had dropped this, and I handed him the 12 dollars. At first he began to debate it,
but
I insisted that he had dropped it off the back of his bike. I then told him he was doing
a
great
thing
caring
for
those
dogs.I
will
be
surprising
him
again
soon
with
a
little
something
he dropped, it brought me great joy to know he did not have to rely on that little bag of cans,
at least for that day anyhow.
The Importance of a Simple Smile
This event happened a long time ago, but it is something that has stayed with me all these
years. When I was in high school, all of the students went on a retreat. At some point, we were
given an exercise where we had to go off by ourselves in silence to do some writing.
As
everyone
was
dispersing
and
walking
around
the
retreat
center
to
find
a
place
of
solitude,
I saw a boy who looked kind of down. I did not know him but we locked eyes for a moment and I
smiled at him. It felt simply natural to give someone a friendly smile. I
could not go talk
to
him
because
of
the
restriction
on
speaking
at
that
time.
I
had
no
idea
how
that
small
gesture
would affect him until later.
After
the
quiet
time,
we
regrouped
and
there
was
a
discussion
and
sharing
time.
This
boy
stood
up and shared that he had been feeling very sad but that one girl gave him a friendly smile and
it helped. Just that small connection with someone else had cheered him up. He said it helped
him not feel so alone with what he was dealing with.
I am so glad that boy shared his feelings with the group. This anecdote is from over 20 years
ago. The boy was not someone I ever saw again. I do not even remember his name. However, I will
never forget the lesson he gave me about the importance of a simple smile which we all can do.

Lighting Up A Stranger

s Home
One Saturday, I got a phone call about electrical problems.
Since I am not an electrician,
I
quickly
realized
that
the
woman
on
the
line
had
the
wrong
number.
The
woman
on
the
phone
sounded
extremely
anxious
as
her
electricity
wasn't
working.
Her
husband
tried
to
replace
a
wall
switch,
but now some of their lights wouldn’t turn on, and the heat
had shut off.

2
The woman thought she
was calling an electrician who has done work for her in the past.
I
had just recently changed my number and she got me instead.
I'm not an electrician but I do
work with electricity.

I
informed
her
that
she
had
the
wr
ong
number,
and
I
didn’t
know
what
her
old
electrician
changed
his number to.
She apologized, and we said goodbye.
After I hung up the phone I thought maybe
I could help her so I dialed *69 and found out she was just one town over.
When I got to her house, I told her I would help her, but I would not accept any money.
This
confused her and she asked why I would bother if I wasn’t getting paid.

I told her it was
an act of kindness and to

Dorothy and Jacob, who were both retired, seemed
surprised and said they never met anyone like me.
I had to run to the local Kmart to get a 3-way switch.
They seemed worried I wouldn't return
but I assured them I would be right back.
Her husband had installed the wrong s
witch which
was causing a short.
After I got the lights working and reset the breakers I re-lit the pilot
light to fix the heater.

After
I
was
done,
they
thanked
me
and
tried
to
give
me
some
money.
I
told
them
I
wouldn’t
accept anything, and that the best payment would be to find someone else to help out.
I also
said if you can't find someone else to repay then just be extra nice to each other. They were
both incredibly happy that I managed to solve their electrical problems quickly, but I think
I was even happier at the opportunity to help them.

A Few Cup of Tea That Touched Many Souls
Last week, I witnessed a beautiful act of kindness.
Actually, I witnessed a million over
the ten days spent in the Kutch region of Gujarat, India and chose to share this one with you
as a testament of the powerful vibration of giving.

I
traveled
to
Kutch
with
Jayesh-bhai,
the
f
ounder
of
Manav
Sadhna
NGO,
two
Manav
Sadhna
staff

Jagat and Bhaskar

and some friends.
On our return to Ahmedabad, we stopped for 'chai'
(Indian
Tea)
at
a
truck
stop.
The
chai
was
absolutely
delicious
and
we
reordered
more
two
times,
with
regular
exclamations
of
its
quality
to
the
servers
and
cashier.
When
it
came
time
to
pay,
the cashier would not take our money.
After some forced attempts to pay, Jagat accepted the
gift
of
the
chai,
took
back
the
money,
thanked
him
and
asked
the
cashier
for
his
phone
number.
Jagat promised to call the cashier when he had paid the gift forward to someone else.

3
What a powerful way of engaging people in paying forward and seeing the impactful ripple effect
of their actions!
Two days later, Jagat called the cashier to tell him that, with the money,
Jagat
had
purchased
5
bottles
of
hair
oil
for
a
child
he
had
met
in
the
slum
that
had
run
out.
I
can only imagine how the cashier now sees his cups of chai.
A Lift That Give Me Joy
Last
fall,
before
Thanksgiving,
I
was
making
my
way
in
my
car
out
of
the
shopping
center
parking
lot.
I was all alone in the car.
I noticed a woman laden with bags and her two boys, one
carrying a pumpkin and the other another bag.
They were headed, I assumed, to
the bus stop across the
major road, since it was too far to walk
with all those purchases to any of the nearby apartment communities.
On a random impulse, I
rolled
down
my
window
and
asked
if
they
were
indeed
headed
to
the
bus
stop.

“Yes,”
the
mother
responded.
I asked

I
was
delighted,
and,
after
maneuvering
over
to
the
side
out
of
the
way
of
other
traffic,
I
stopped
and the boys piled into the back seat.
The mother started to push in beside them.
I stopped
her by saying, “Oh, you come on up here by me. I’m not a taxi!”

So off we went.
Right away, I decided to take them the mile and a half to their home, since I had time and they
had bundles.
The boys chattered away telling me about themselves, and I had just a fine time
listening and talking with all of them.
It felt so good to be able to do this little trip and
know that with such a small effort I could make a big difference to a tired mother.

I’m not
sure who got the most out of it.
Incidentally,
this
was
special
for
me
because,
as
a
handicapped
person,
I’m
often
on
the
receiving
end of help and now know how especially good it feels to be useful.
Knowing That She Was There Made Us Feel Much Less Alone
When my son was first diagnosed with Autism, it was a very hard time for us.
In some ways
it was a relief, because we finally had a name for what was going on in our lives, but it also
meant years more of uncertainty, and we didn't know what the future held.
When
I
shared
the
news
with my
coworkers,
I was
so
surprised
and
happy
to
receive
so
much
immediate love and support from them.
They were focused on what we needed, as opposed
to how it would affect my ability to make it to work.
One coworker in particular was amazing to my family and I.
She called me into her office
a
few
days
later,
and
gave
me
a

stone

for
your
thumb.
It gives you something to focus on when you're worried, rubbing your thumb
around on this stone.
It was a lovely gesture.
She
then
extended
a
permanent
offer
to
drive
us
to
any
appointments
or
testing
that
we
needed.
Considering the fact that we lived 90 minutes from where most treatments took place,
this
was
a
tremendous
offer.
She
made
it
very
clear
to
me
that
this
offer
included
last
minute
trips
or
emergencies.

Anytime
we
needed
to
go
anywhere,
she
was
willing
to
be
our
transportation.
She said that we needed
to be able to focus on our son as opposed to having
to divide our attention between the road and him.
We never did need to take her up on her wonderful offer, but knowing it was there and that
she was so willing to help made it feel like we were much less alone.

I'm tremendously grateful to
her and everyone around us who rallied to be a support system in
our time of need.
We were really overwhelmed by the level of support we received.

The Seed That Never Grown
A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take
over the business.
Instead
of
choosing
one
of
his
Directors
or
his
children,
he
decided
to
do
something
different.
He called all the young executives in his company together.
He said,
one of you.
The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued.
h one of you
a seed today - one very special seed.
I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back
here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you.
I will then
judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO.
One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home
and
excitedly,
told
his
wife
the
story.
She
helped
him
get
a
pot,
soil
and
compost
and
he
planted
the
seed.
Everyday,
he
would
water
it
and
watch
to
see
if
it
had
grown.
After
about
three
weeks,
some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning
to grow.

5
Jim
kept
checking
his
seed,
but
nothing
ever
grew.
Three
weeks,
four
weeks,
five
weeks
went
by,
still
nothing.
By
now,
others
were
talking
about
their
plants,
but
Jim
didn't
have
a
plant
and he felt like a failure.
Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone
else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues,
however.... He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow.
A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to
the CEO for inspection.
Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot.
But
she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to
be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right.
He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of
plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes.
Jim put
his empty pot on the floor and
many
of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for
him!
When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.
Jim just tried to hide in the back.
said the CEO.
All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the
Financial Director to bring him to the front.
Jim was terrified. He thought,
I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!
When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed - Jim told him the
story.
The CEO
asked everyone to sit down
except
Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced
to
the young
executives,
Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow his seed.

the others said.
Then the CEO said,
the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds;
they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow.
All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the
seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you.
Jim was the only

6
one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one
who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!
If you plant honesty, you will reap trust; if you plant goodness, you will reap friends; if you
plant humility, you will reap greatness; if you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment;
if you plant consideration, you will reap perspective; if you plant hard work, you will reap
success; if you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation; if you plant faith in God ,
you will reap a harvest.

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will
reap later.

Whatever You Give To Life, Life Gives You Back.
Nightshift at the Marriott
It had been a long, hot August day. We'd driven over six hundred miles and it was nearing 11
pm as we entered Kingman, Arizona. We pulled off and picked a motel. Much to my surprise, it
being mid- week, the deskman informed me they were full. Next place, same story. This time, I
asked the clerk for suggestions.

At the Hampton we were greeted with,

the Grand Canyon. It's an unusual evening. You might try the Best Western. I think they had one
room left about an hour ago.
We tried the Best Western. No luck.
By that time, we'd traveled to the west end of Kingman. We turned around for another try and
were
startled
to
see
the
moon-huge,
reddish
and
only
half
full-standing
barely
above
the
horizon
in
the
still
of
the
desert
night.

can
even
see
the
craters,
my
wife
said
almost
to
herself.
I'd been in Sa
nta Fe for a conference. My wife, returning from Europe, had flown into to
Albuquerque
the
night
before.
In
spite
of
her
jet
lag,
we'd
put
in
about
350
miles
between
Belen
and then north past San
ta Fe to El Rito. So now, when I suggested we push on to Needles fifty
miles down the road, she balked.
luck?
