The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had
lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet
the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew
they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.

One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his
wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had
interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother.
He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”

After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I
wish we could help him to earn
money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”

“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”

For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a gre
at idea! I have
a solution that we can all help accomplish(

The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you
what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us

When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’
s idea, she thought it was a good one, too.
So, they went to the local supermarket
together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of
popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell
the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this
family.

With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
He took the popcorn around to the houses and
sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self- dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs.
Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt
to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of

150
左右。

I woke at 5:30 A

M. after a restless night’s sleep. I slowly unzipped the tent door to inspect the new day. Just
like yesterday, the wind had dropped. It was another beautiful Arctic day. I crawled out of my sleeping bag
unwillingly. I am normally a morning person but the intense cold outside made that morning most unappealing.
Anyhow, it was time to greet Charlie and start the day.
My dog Charlie was up and it was bouncing up and down at the end of his chain looking well rested. I poured
what looked like a pound of dog food into his bowl.

Stepping out of the tent, I looked around for bears or tracks and saw none. It would never be a good thing to meet
a polar bear. An Inuit (
) once told me that I should watch out for polar bears. He said that if I met a polar
bear, I should keep the following rules in mind. First, keep eye contact, move sideways or slightly forward, never
backward, stay calm. Do not show fear and stand beside a large object to make myself appear as large as possible.
Weapons like flare gun(
) are necessary, but do not shoot unless forced to. Don’t wound a bear, or you'll make
it even more dangerous, and never run.
It was only six o’clock, so I decided to have a leisurely
breakfast of a bowl of milk powder, coconut flakes, and
butter mixed with warm water. I sat on my sled

to enjoy my first breakfast of the expedition only to find that
after the third spoonful it was frozen. So much for leisurely breakfasts! I added more warm water and ate the rest as
fast as possible.
Suddenly I heard a deep, long growl coming from Charlie’s throat. In a flash I looked at him and then in the
direction in which he was staring. It was a female polar bear followed by two cubs

slowly, purposefully,
toward me. They were two hundred yards away.
Paragraph 1:
With my heart quickening, I grabbed my loaded flare gun and carefully walked sideways a few steps to Charlie.

With my heart quickening, I grabbed my loaded flare gun and carefully walked sideways a few steps to Charlie.
Without taking my eyes off the bear, I led him to the sled and fastened his chain to a rope. The bear was getting closer.
Remembering all the Inuit had told me, I fired a warning shot to the bear
’s left. But on she came. Then, I fired a flare
right in front of her. She stopped and looked at me. Then she fixed her eyes on Charlie, who was barking wildly. She

looked back at her cubs and waited for them to catch up, then finally moved away toward my right.
The whole event lasted fifteen minutes but seemed years long. My hands were shaking as I stood still, watching
the three slowly move north. But despite the fear, I could feel deep down inside a real satisfaction. I now knew that I
could stand up to a bear in the wild and stay calm enough to function and still remember the words from the Inuit.
With Charlie’s help I had passed my first test.

Charlie

Charlie
Charlie
Charlie

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving,
sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks
driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my

eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-
bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again?
Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent
into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the
purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept:
“You stand outside the door and play lookout(
放哨
) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while
you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh…I thought they were
being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time,
Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely
-looking backyard and ask if we could set up
tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand
our objections(
反对
). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She
thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
注意:

1.
150
左右;

2.
5
个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

3.
续写部分分为两段,每段的开头已为你写好;

4.

Paragraph 1:
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us.
______________

Paragraph 2:
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way.
______________

The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us.
Thinking of this tent, Mom suggested that
we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed.
When the door of our car opened, Mom stormed out instantly and urged us to put up the tent. David and I were asked
to pick up some branches to build a fire. And when we came back, Dad and Mom had already lain down the grass
comfortably in front of the tent, talking merrily with a local boy at our age, who kept glancing at this tent curiously.
Soon we learnt that the boy in rags even didn’t have a home to live in. Of course, Mom “forgot” to take this tent with

us again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way
. And we also had a nice time living with
my grandparents during that trip. But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by
Mom. Though she did love going camping, she presented that poor boy with this tent out of sympathy. It was Mom
that made my childhood colorful. And it was also she that showed me the true meaning of giving.

fo rgetful

nice
);

)

;
;
;
;
;

:

with

Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering
her enthusiasm, we all agreed. what
which
But what impressed me
most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom.

faster! Her husband encouraged her.

To help Amy stay healthy, her husband had been running with her for over two years. Several years ago, Amy
could barely walk down the stairs of her apartment building due to fatness caused by eating disorders. She realized the
problem after a failed job interview and began walking to improve her ability to move. At first, she could walk for
only 15 minutes at a time. But she pushed herself every day, walking 5 minutes longer than she did the day before
until she walked for an hour and eventually two. For three years, Amy kept her walking habit, slowly and
painstakingly building her body shape. Then she changed her walking shoes to running shoes about two years ago and
became an excellent runner.
In March 2001, an advertisement invited people to nominate

bring the Olympic flame to Salt Lake City as torch bearers

or support runners.

Support runners serve as

Amy's experiences touched her husband, so
he nominated her to be a torch bearer. The possibility to be selected was low, but Amy wanted to try.
Running taught Amy the importance of training for a race. She pictured herself running a race and crossing the
finish line. For months, she ran through her neighborhood carrying a broken-off broom handle, feeling the weight of
the torch. She waved at her neighbors, pretending they were cheering crowds. She also printed a picture of a torch
bearer wearing the white uniform, replaced the face with a picture of hers, and put it onto her refrigerator door.
Every day, Amy imagined herself as a torch bearer. She was training for a historic running event. On September
26th, while on her daily run through her neighborhood, an express package arrived.

another package arrived. It contained her official blue support runner uniform along with instructions for her part of
the relay. Then on a cold day, Amy and her husband stood outside the Torch Relay collection point.
Paragraph 2:
