In
the
past,
I
often
saw
ants
eating
biscuits,
bread,
juice
and
other
sugary
foods,
but
I
never
saw
them
eating
sour,
spicy
and
other things, do they really only love sweets? With this
curiosity in
mind, I
spent
the
summer
making
a field
survey
of
the eating habits of ants.

Time: August 27, 2006 (Sunday)

Weather condition: Sunny

Experimenter: a pupil in grade five (assisted by father and
mother) to complete the experiment

Experiment site: grassland near the dam two of Ming Dynasty
Tombs reservoir in Beijing (see photo 1)

(drive from West Third Ring Road, Beijing, about 40 minutes)

Sample preparation:

into seven small pieces;

pieces
of
steamed
bread
with
honey,
soy
sauce,
water,
vinegar,
hot
pepper,
coke
and
orange
juice
(I

3. Then each sample is placed in a transparent plastic bag.

Experiment 1:

Experimental procedure:

First, after arriving at the destination, first look for the
flat, not too high weeds, and better to do experiments;

Two

place

seven
samples
at
a
distance
of
about
1~2
meters (see photo 2). Confirm if the sample is placed or not.

Two and then we left the experimental site about 3 miles away
in order to avoid scaring ants and affecting the experimental
results.

Three, halfway through the experiment (about 30 minutes after
the
start
of
the
experiment),
close
observation
of
ants,
in
the
prepared form to fill in a variety of samples, ants pay the
amount.

Four, after about 1 hours, fill in a variety of samples, ants
pay the amount, and carefully observe the ants.

Experiment result:

The first

Question:

As can be seen from the above experiment, the colorless and
tasteless
water
attracted
the
most
ants,
while
the
acid
steamed
bread
attracted
the
least
ants.
Isn't
the
ant
really
like
this?
Armed with this question, we carried out second experiments.

Experiment two:

Experimental procedure:

First,
gently
remove
the
ants
on
the
sample,
and
then
place
the
seven samples in a triangular area of about 10 centimeters at
each distance (see photo 3). And then confirm the sample
placement problems.

Two and then we left the experimental site about 3 miles away
in order to avoid scaring ants and affecting the experimental
results.

Three, after
about 30
minutes,
fill
in
a variety
of
samples
of
ants pay the amount. And watch the ants carefully.

From
the
results
of
second
experiments
can
be
seen,
with
spicy
oil
Steamed
Buns
paying
ants
up
to
about
70;
the
second
is
with
the Orange Juice Steamed Buns about 30; the more than 3 is
stained with vinegar Steamed Buns about 10; fourth is stained
with honey Steamed Buns about 5; fifth with the Steamed Buns
Cola is 4; sixth is stained with water Steamed Buns about 3;
the last is stained with soy sauce Steamed Buns had not. (see
photo 4)

experimental result

After
comparing
Table
1
and
table
2
of
the
experiment
results,
I think we can draw the following conclusion:

1,
in
the
first
survey,
probably
due
to
the
living
environment
and
eating
habits
in
various
parts
of
the
ants,
and
some
samples
of the position from the home of ants (nest), so the results
somewhat upset.

2,
little
love
to
eat
greasy
food,
and
ants
but
love
eating
sweet
food.

3, ant walking very regular, very neat, and big ant is go all
the way.

4 see, in the experiment, the ant ants than unity,

They work together to move food together.

5, when the big ants eat honey without ant, the reason may be:

(1) the ant does not love to eat honey, love to eat greasy
things.

(2)
because
of
the
large
ants
in
fear,
afraid
to
eat
large
ants
ants.

6, when the ants eat without large ants, the reason may be:

Ant and ant love to eat something different.

7,
in
the
two
experiment,
the
results
showed
that
steamed
bread
containing vinegar paid less ants, probably because:

Vinegar contains acid, and ants themselves secrete acid, so
ants do not like acidic things.

and
two
experiments
show
that
ants
do
not
like
to
eat
steamed
bread with soy sauce, so it can be said that ants do not like
to eat salty things.

My harvest:

Through this experiment, I got the following harvest:

(1) know what ants like to eat;

(2) contact with nature and small animals in person, and
increase extracurricular knowledge;

(3) initially learned how to do small experiments in science,
and improved my observation ability.

My expectation:

I'm
going
to
continue
doing
experiments
about
ants
in
the
future.
A better understanding of the ant's eating habits.
