Chinese painting has a long history. All the people around the world must be
attracted by its incomparable beauty if they see it. I had the opportunity to visit the
Hubei province museum and saw many Chinese painting in it this term. Comparing
with caricature from Japan and oil painting from European countries, Chinese
painting, magnificently conceived
, leaves much for viewers to the imagination. It is
rooted deeply in the soil of Chinese culture after thousand of years and has become
one of the unique cultural treasures. It contains the cultural literacy, mode of thinking,
aesthetic and philosophical concepts, which reflect the characteristics, style and verve
of Chinese people. It is another art peak and its position in the world of art can never
be replaced.

Types of Chinese painting

In the development of China, Chinese painting formed many branch.

According to its comment, it basically has four types-characters in summary:
figures
, landscape, birds and flowers and Jie painting.

Mountains and natural scenery is the main body of the landscape painting. In
Sui and Tang dynasties, landscape painting in china has become an independent
creation. In the Five dynasties and the northern Song dynasty,

painters matured their paintings by constant exploration and revision and painting in
this time has become perfect. According to painting skill and coloring, the Chinese
landscape painting can be divided into ink, green, golden, shallow Jiang, light colour
and other forms.

Bird and flower painting is to describe flowers,
fruits, bamboo stone, animals
and insects, etc. its inception is very early. Pottery in Neolithic Period and

bronze
ware in Yin and Zhou Dynasties both have decoration patterns like plants, dragon,
and fish on them. In accordance with the theme, traditional flower and bird painting
can be divided into flowers, fruits, feathers (birds), animals, insects, and fish painting
etc.
The genre flourished under Emperor Huizong (1082 - 1135), who was an artist
himself and excelled at both calligraphy and traditional painting, especially paintings
of exquisite flowers and birds

Jie painting refers to buildings such as the palace, house, and pavilions. It is
also called
bounded straight foot line drawing. Jie painting is founded in the Sui dynasty.

According to the means of expression, Chinese painting can be divided into two
categories: the xieyi school and the gongbi school. The xieyi school is marked by
exaggerated forms and freehand brush work. The gongbi school is characterized by
close attention to detail and fine brush work.

Xieyi, however, is the fundamental approach to Chinese painting. It constitutes
an aesthetic theory, which emphasizes sentiments. Even in ancient times, Chinese
artists were unwilling to be restrained by reality. A famous artist of the Jin Dynasty
Gu Kaizhi (345-406) was the first to put forward the theory of
the spirit
appearance of an object, but express how the artist looks at it. Gu's views were
followed by theories such as
should be something between likeness and unlikeness
Chinese artists disregard the limitations of proportion, perspective, and light. Take Qi
Baishi, the modern painter, for example. He does not paint shrimps, insects, birds, and
flowers as they are in nature; only their essence has shown as a result of the artist's
long-term observation and profound understanding of the subject.
No matter what the subject or the style is, traditional Chinese painting should be
infused with imagination and soul. A traditional story that captures the Chinese view
of painting tells about the establishment of a royal college of painting during the reign
of Emperor Huizong. Examinations were held to recruit the best painters. Examinees
were asked to draw a picture that reflected the joy of people who had just returned
from a spring outing, an outing that had been so pleasant that even the horseshoes
seemed fragrant. Many endeavored to depict this bright scene but only one work was
chosen; the painter simply drew a horse's hoof followed by butterflies which were in
graceful flight. This painter had managed to capture the essential spirit and beauty of
the scene.

3. Features of Chinese painting
Different from Western paintings, a Chinese painting is not restricted by the
focal point in its perspective. The artist may paint on a long and narrow piece of paper
or silk all the scenes along the Yangtze River. It can be said that the adoption of
shifting perspective is one of the characteristics of Chinese painting. Why do the
Chinese artists emphasize the shifting perspective? They want to break away from the
restrictions of time and space and to include in their pictures both things which are far
and things which are near. Also, the artists find that in life people view their
surroundings from a mobile focal point. As one walks along a river or in a garden, one
sees everything on the way. The shifting perspective enables the artist to express
freely what he wants.

Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting are closely related because lines are
used in both. Chinese people have turned simple lines into a highly-developed form of
art. Lines are used not only to draw contours but to express the artist's concepts and

feelings. For different subjects and different purposes a variety of lines are used. They
may be straight or curved, hard or soft, thick or thin, pale or dark, and the ink may be
dry or running. The use of lines and strokes is one of the elements that give Chinese
painting its unique qualities.

Traditional Chinese painting is a combination in the same picture of the arts of
poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal engraving. In ancient times most artists were
poets and painters. Su Dongpo (1037-1101), Ni Yunlin (1306-1374), and Dong
Qichang (1555-1636) were such artists. To the Chinese,
poetry in painting
and seal impressions help to explain the painter's ideas and sentiments and also add
decorative beauty to the painting. Ancient artists liked to paint pines, bamboo, and
plum blossoms. When inscriptions like
were made, those plants were meant to embody the qualities of people who were
upright and were ready to help each other under hard conditions
4.
Artistic conception of Chinese painting
Chinese Painting attached great importance to the performance of mood, only
fully reflects the thoughts and feelings, will produce a moving picture realm. We
should enhance all aspects of self-cultivation, with others to create a different mood.
Focus on mood, is used to toggle artist has demonstrated an important means for the
viewer.

Whether Chinese painting figure painting, landscape painting, or flower, have
special attention to the performance of the object in mood. Chinese artists that the
work should be a good painter from the observation of objective understanding of
things and experience the feelings generated a certain thoughts and feelings, through
the special artistic ideas and image-building, the full expression of such thoughts and
feelings out. Painting enables those who enjoy resonate through the association,
thoughts and feelings are infected. Whether painting mood, which is an important
factor in the success of work. The performance of the pursuit of artistic conception of
traditional Chinese aesthetics is an important part of thinking, which is an important
feature of Chinese painting.

Different from general meshwork, Chinese painting should be full of life, fresh
and lively, giving viewers a feeling of poem and much imagination. If not showed so
