Generally
speaking
,
Renaissance
refers
to
the
period
between
the
14th
and
mid-17th
century.
The
word
“Renaissance”
means
the
rebirth
of
letter
,
specifically
in
this
period
of
history
,
revival
of
interest
in
ancient
Greek and Roman culture. Renaissance
,
in essence
,
was
a
historical
period
in
which
the
European
humanist
thinkers
and
scholars
made
attempts
to
get
rid
of
conservatism
(保守)
in
feudalist
Europe
and
introduce
new
ideas
that
expressed
the
interests
of
the
rising
bourgeoisie.
Two features are striking of this movement. The one
is a thirsting curiosity for the classical literature.
Another
is
the
keen
interest
in
the
activities
of
humanity.
Representative is Shakespear.

(sonnet)
The
sonnet
was
established
by
Petrarch
in
the
14th
century
and came to be adopted in Spain, France, and England in
the
16th
century.
A
verse
form
of
Italian
origin
consisting
of 14 lines in iambic pentameter with rhymes arranged
according to a fixed scheme, usually divided either into
octave(
八度音
)
and
sestet
(
六行诗节)
or
in
the
English
form
into three quatrains
(四行诗)
and a couplet. The
rhyme
schemes
of the sonnet follow two basic patterns.
Italian sonnet
,
Petrarchan sonnet
- a sonnet consisting
of an octave with the rhyme pattern abbaabba, followed by
a sestet with the rhyme pattern cdecde or cdcdcd.

Classicism
)
A movement or tendency in art, literature, or music
that
reflects
the
principles
manifested
in
the
art
of
ancient
Greece
and
Rome
during
the
17th
and
18th
centuries
in
Europe.
The
classicists
modeled
themselves
on
Greek
and
Latin authors, and tried to control literary creation by
some
fixed
laws
and
rules
drawn
from
Greek
and
Latin
works.
Representatives are Addison, Steele and Pope.
浪漫主义(
romanticism
)
It prevailed in England during the period 1798-1832.
Generally
speaking,
the
romanticists
expressed
the
ideology
and
sentiment
of
those
classes
and
social
strata
who were discontent with, and oppose to, the development
of capitalism. It characterized by a heightened interest
in
nature,
emphasis
on
the
individual's
expression
of
emotion
and
imagination,
departure
from
the
attitudes
and
forms of classicism, and rebellion against established
social rules and conventions.
But
own
to
difference
in
social
and
political
attitudes,
they split into two schools. escapist romanticists and
active romanticists. Representatives are Walter Scott.

English critical realism of the century flourished in
the
forties
and
in
the
early
fifties.
The
critical
realists
described
with
much
vividness
and
great
artistic
skill
the
chief traits of the English society and criticized the
