过去完成时表示过去的某时前已经发生的动作或情 况,也就是
“过去的过去”
。如:

By the end of June they had treated 3,000 patients.
The play had already started when we got to the theater.

、常使用过去完成时的情况


1)
在很多情况下,句中没有明显的时间状语,而是要从上下文
来分析, 这时过去完成时表示的动作较另一过去的动作先发生。

when, as soon as, before, after, until, now that
等连词的
复合句中,
如果主句谓语和从句谓语表示的 过去动作是在不同时间发
生的,那么先发生的动作常用过去完成时来表示。

I hadn’t learned any English before I came here.

、一般过去时与过去完成时的区别。

过去完成时表示在过去某个动作发生之前已完成的动作,

“过
去的过去”
;而一般过去时表示的是与“现在”相对而言的过去,二
者在时间上相关一个时间段。注意区别以下两个 句子:

It seems that he has known the news.
It seemed that he had known the news.
