四、阅读理解
(

)
A
A
team
of
engineers
at
Harvard
University
has
been
inspired
by
Nature
to
create

3
the
first
robotic
fly.
The
mechanical
fly
has
become
a
platform
for
a
series
of
new
high- tech integrated systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny
machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air
and perform controlled flight tasks.
“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and
not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (
元件),” said Robert Wood,
the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project
for
over
a
decade.
A
few
years
ago,
his
team
got
the
go-ahead
to
start
piecing
together
the compo
nents. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually
none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on
our own,” he said.

They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The
seemingly
simple
system
which
just
moves
the
wings
has
a
number
of
interdependencies
on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but
then
has
to
be
matched
well
to
everything
it’s
connected
to,”
said
Wood.
The
flight
device
was
built
into
a
set
of
power,
computation,
sensing
and
control
systems.
Wood
says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny
components can be built and manufactured.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source,
the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might
someday
perform
data-
gathering
work
at
rescue
sites,
in
farmers’
fields
or
on
the
battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he
said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at
insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could
have
much
broader
applications.
“You
can
start
thinking
about
using
them
to
answer
open
scientific
questions,
you
know,
to
study
biology
in
ways
that
would
be
difficult
with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot
of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what
drives us on a da
y to day basis.”

4
36. The robotic fly project has been conducted __________.
A. just by accident

B. within a decade

D. for more than ten years
C. just by a professor

37. The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was
that __________.
A. they had no model in their mind
B. they did not have sufficient time
C. they had no ready-made components
D. they could not assemble the components
38. It can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly __________.
A. consists of a flight device and a control system
B. can just fly in limited areas at the present time
C. can collect information from many sources
D. has been put into wide application
39. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.
B. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.
C. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.
D. Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.

40. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Father of Robotic Fly
B. Inspiration from Engineering Science
C. Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect
D. Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study
B
How
could
we
possibly
think
that
keeping
animals
in
cages
in
unnatural
environments

mostly for entertainment purposes

is fair and respectful?
Zoo
officials
say
they
are
concerned
about
animals.
How
ever,
most
zoos
remain
“collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos
teach
people
that
it
is
acceptable
to
keep
animals
bored,
lonely,
and
far
from
their

5

natural homes.
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave
zoos
without
having
learned
anything
meaningful
about
the
animals’
natural
behavior,
intelligence,
or
beauty.
Zoos
keep
animals
in
small
spaces
or
cages,
and
most
signs
only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal
behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’
natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little
opportunity
for
mental
and
physical
exercise.
This
results
in
unusual
and
self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that
zoochosis
is
common
among
animals
kept
in
small
spaces
or
cages.
Another
study
showed
that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or
biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth,
a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (
圈养
繁殖
) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted
in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding
programs
because
they
do
not
want
people
to
worry
about
a
species
dying
out.
In
fact,
baby
animals
also
attract
a
lot
of
paying customers.
Haven’t
we
seen
enough
competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and
put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should
support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

41
. How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?

A. Dangerous.
B. Unhappy. C. Natural. D. Easy.
42. In the state of zoochosis, animals _________.
A. remain in cages

B. behave strangely
D. enjoy moving around
C. attack other animals

43. What does the author try to argue in the passage?
A. Zoos are not worth the public support.

6
B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.
D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.
44. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by _____.
A. discussing the advantages of natural habitats
B. using evidence he has collected at zoos
C. questioning the way animals are protected
D. pointing out the faults in what zoos do
45. Although he argues against zoos, the author would still agree that _______.
A. zoos have to keep animals in small cages
B. most animals in zoos are endangered species
C. some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos
D. it’s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats

C
Do
you
know
what
Fear
and
Faith
have
in
common?
Fear
believes
in
a
negative
future.
Faith believes in a positive future. Both believe in something that has not yet
happened. So I ask you, if neither the positive nor negative future has happened
yet then why not choose to believe in the positive future?
I believe during these challenging times we have a choice between two roads:
the positive road and th
e negative road. And our bus can’t be on two roads at the
same time. So we have to make a choice and this choice determines our belief about
the future and the attitude and actions we bring to the present.
I’m
not
saying
we
shouldn’t
have
any
fear.
There
a
re
times
when
fear
is
a
gift.
A healthy dose(
剂量
) of fear causes us to examine our situation and plan for the
future.
It
moves
us
to
smell
the
cheese
and
expect
change.
When
used
wisely
it
allows
us to manage risk and make better decisions. Some fear is good.
However, what I have observed lately is a supersized, huge dose of fear that
is spreading the hearts and minds of far too many people. This oversized fear is
causing leaders and their organizations to either act unreasonably or to not act
at
all.
They
are
either
hurrying
in
a
million
different
directions
because
of
fear.
