A
A recent documentary produced by the
British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has
caused a stir in China and in the UK.
The documentary, titled Are Our Kids
Tough Enough? focuses on five Chinese
teachers who are sent to teach 50 UK
teens at a school in Hampshire.
The
teachers instruct the students for a month. The
pupils are then tested, and
the results
are compared to the ones of those who have
continued in the regular UK
education
system. The idea is to see if the Chinese method
improves academic
performance.
The
Chinese
teachers
use
their
own
teaching
methods
but
receive
strong
resistance
from
the
students.
A
clip
from
the
documentary
online
shows
some
problems,
with
Chinese
teachers calling
their students lazy and lacking in discipline,
while the students
say the high
pressure and harsh teachers are driving them
crazy.
This has aroused a new debate in
both China and the UK, with some arguing the
teenagers need more regulation and
discipline. Others say Chinese methods encourage
rote learning
(
死记硬背
) instead of
independent thinking. For instance, Chinese
language teachers should do more than
pass on knowledge about words and characters.
They
should
inspire
students,
helping
them
feel
the
sentiment
from
Chinese
literature.
This is a higher
level of teaching.
Yang
Dongping,

says,
“The
Chinese
teaching
methods
are
designed
to
strictly
train
the
majority.
Foreign
teaching
methods, however, are more natural and
relaxing, and designed to inspire students’
- 1 -
interest
in
learning.
Education
methods
are
based
on
culture.
That
is
why
a
successful
education method in one place may not
work that well when simply ‘transplanted’
into another place.”
Yang Dongping says, “The documentary
does reflect some problems rooted in
traditional
Chinese
teaching
methods.
Nobel

One spring day, once the
flowers have begun to open, a bee will hover
(
盘旋
) and
zip
through your yard and dive-bomb your picnic table.
While you're thinking about
avoiding an
attack, that bee is focused on something else
entirely: me.
A honeybee has about six
weeks to live. Today, like most days, her task is
to
fly
as
many
as

from
home,

minutes,
until
the
mixture
is
ready
to
be
placed
into
the
comb.
Then she and her 50
000 or so mates will hover in the dark all night
every night,
flapping their wings to
create hot, breezy conditions to remove the water
from the
mixture. Several sunrises
later, they will seal me off in a golden cell of
beeswax.

myself, I am a timeless treasure. Literally---I
never go bad.
Alas, my good
health is not guaranteed. The problem lies in the
growth of
industrial agriculture and
the use of pest control chemicals, as well as
changes in
weather patterns, all of
which reduce the number of flowers bees have to

Your
colleague’s
sharp

replaying
in
your
mind.
Two
of
your
students
are
trapped in a “he said/she said” battle. When you
reflect on your emotional

get
caught
up
in
cycles
of
negative
feelings,
which
can
make

If
so,
the

lie
in
a
skill
called

“self

the ability to take a step back and view
yourself more objectively. According to a
research,
when
people
adopt
self-distancing
while
discussing
a
difficult
event,
they
make
better
sense
of
their
reactions,
experience
less
emotional
suffering,
and
display
fewer signs of
stress.
But what might
self-
distancing look like in action?
Consider a typical “he
said/she
said”
student
conflict
where
they
are
each
focusing
on
their
own
feeling
s.
One is thinking
,“I can’t
believe he did that to me.” And another insists,
“She
really
hurt
my
feelings.”
However,
if
you
ask
them
to
take
the
self
-distancing,
they
might step outside of
themselves and ask broader questions: “Why was he
so hurt in
this s
ituation?”
or “How did her anger affect him?”
Although this approach may sound too
simple to be effective, studies indicate
that a change in point of view can have
a powerful effect on the way people think,
feel, and behave. Here are several
different techniques you can try.
First
,
consider
how a thoughtful friend might respond after
quietly observing
their
situation.
Besides,
avoid
using
the
pronoun
“I”.
Focus
on
using
third
-person
pronouns,
he,
she,
they,
and
they
were
able
to
see
the
stressful
event
as
challenging
- 5 -
rather than
thr
eatening. Finally, ask yourself,
“How would I feel about this one
week
from
now
or
ten
years
from
now?”
This
form
of
mental
time
travel
may
be
effective
because our
attention is directed away from our immediate,
concrete circumstances.
7. What is
self-distancing?
A. Getting stuck in
negative emotions.
C. A study on
relieving emotional stress.
objectively.
8. Paragraph 2

D. process
B. A

D. Reflecting on

statement uses the techniques of self-distancing?
A. I’m angry with him.
B. How I wish I could go back to the
past!
C. How did these two people get
to this point?
D. He grabbed my notes,
and then, and then
10. What is the best

Fun
Writing Activities for Struggling Writers
There
are
dozens
of
reasons
kids
struggle
with
writing.
They
may
have
difficulty
getting their thoughts down on
paper._____11_____Perhaps grammar and language
barriers are blocking their progress.
Whatever the reason, adding a little fun can
be a great way to get the creative
juices flowing.
_____12_____
- 7 -
Sometimes
writers get stuck because they simply don’t know
where to start. For
a child
you can try things that are
geared(
合适

interests, like
My
Favorite
Toy
,
or
What
I
Like
to
Do
in
the
Summer
.
Remember, it'
s
important
to
support
and guide their
ideas, not to discourage thoughts or judge them.
Develop a story map
A great
activity to help struggling writers is to build a
story map. Write down
ideas for the
beginning, middle, and end of a story. Or put the
topic in the middle
of
the
paper
and
draw
lines
out
like
a
wheel
for
who,
what
where,
and
why.
_____13_____
This is
helpful, because it takes stress out of the
writing process.
Make writing relevant
Children are more apt to write if they
can identify with the purpose of writing.
Writing a letter to a friend or
relative can better engage a struggling writer. Or
maybe your child has some suggestions
for books that the library should have.
_____14_____
If writing
becomes a more meaningful activity to
the child, it can
help
to
make it an easier process.
Make writing
enjoyable
You
could
consider
making
different
writing
supplies
available
like
colored
pens
and pencils, notebooks, etc. Or you
could provide a word bank of common words for
your
kid
to
use
and
spell.
___15___
Afterwards,
reward
your
child’s
good
performance.
These all set
the stage and invite kids to get excited to write.
A. Inspire ideas
B. Develop
an interest.
C. Use the map to guide
the writing.
D. Make the process into
more of a game.
E. Maybe they lack
experiences to write about
F. There are
loads of fun ways to get children writing.
G. Encourage him to write a letter to
the person in charge
