A

We all know what a brain is. A

doctor will tell

you that the brain is the organ of

the body

in the head.

It controls our body

s functions, movements, emotions and thoughts. But a brain can mean so much more.

A brain can also simply be a smart person. If a person is called brainy, he is smart and intelligent.

If

a

family has many children but one of them is super smart, you could say,

He

s the brains in the family.

And if you are the brains behind something, you are responsible for developing or organizing something.

For example, Bill Gates is the brains behind Microsoft.

Brain trust is a group of experts who give advice. Word experts say

the phrase “brain trust” became

popular

when Franklin D. Roosevelt first ran for president in 1932. Several professors gave him advice on social

and political issues facing the U.S. These professors were called his “brain trust”.

These ways we use the word

“brain”

all make sense. But other ways we use the word are not so easy

to

understand.

For

example,

to

understand

the

next

brain

expression,

you

first

nee

d

to

know

the

word

“drain”.

As a verb, to drain means to remove something by letting it flow away. So a brain drain may sound like a

disease

where

the brain

flows out

the ears. But, brain drain

is when

a country

s most educated people leave

their countries to live in another. The brains are, sort of, draining out of the country.

However,

if

people

are

responsible

for

a

great

idea,

you

could

say

they

brainstormed

it.

Here,

brainstorm

is

not an act of weather. It is a process of thinking creatively about a complex topic. For example, business

leaders

may

use

brainstorming

to

create

new

products,

and

government

leaders

may

brainstorm

to

solve

problems.

If people are brainwashed, it does not mean their brains are nice and clean. To brainwash means to

make

some accept new beliefs

by

using repeated

pressure in a forceful

or

tricky way.

Keep in mind

that brainwash

is never used in a positive way.

21.

According to the text, if y

ou’re the CEO of Baidu

you can be called

A. the organ of Bai Du

C. the brains behind Bai Du

.

B. the brain drain of Bai Du

D. Bai Du

s brain trust

.

22.

Roosevelt successfully won the election probably because

A. he got his brain trust

C. he was smart at giving advice

23.

From the passage, we can infer that

.

B. he got the help of word experts

D. he was the brains behind America

A.

to drain a lake means to fill it with a lot of water

When I was seven my father gave me a Timex, my first watch. I loved it, wore it for years, and haven

t

had

another

one

since

it

stopped

ticking

a

decade

ago.

Why?

Because

I

don

t

need

one.

I

have

a

mobile

phone

and

I’m alwa

ys near someone with an iPod or something like that. All these devices tell the time

which

is why, if you look around, y

ou’ll

see lots of empty wrists; sales of watches to young adults have been

going down since

2007.

But

while

the

wise

have

realized

that

they

don

t

need

them,

others

apparently

including

some

distinguished men of our time

are spending total fortunes on them. Brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe

and Breitling command shocking pri

ces, up to ?250,000 for a piece.

This is ridiculous. Expensive cars go faster than cheap cars. Expensive clothes hang better than

cheap

clothes.

But these

days

all

watches

tell

the

time

as

well

as

all

other

watches.

Expensive

watches come

with

extra functions

but who needs them? How often do you dive to 300 meters into the sea or need to find

your

direction

in

the

area

around

the

South

Pole?

So

why

pay

that

much

of

five

years

school

fees

for

watches

that allow you to do these things?

If justice were done, the Swiss watch industry should have closed down when the Japanese discovered

how

to make accurate watches for a five- pound note. Instead, the Swiss reinvented the watch, with the aid of

millions of pounds

worth of advertising, as a message about the man wearing it. Rolexes are for those who

spend their weekends climbing icy mountains; a Patek Philippe is for one from a rich or noble family; a

Breitling suggests you like to pilot planes across the world.

Watches are now classified as

“investments”.

A 1994 Philippe recently sold for nearly

?350,000,

while

1960s Rolex

es have gone from ?15,000 to ?30,000 plus in a

year. But a watch is not an investment. It

s a

toy

for

self-satisfaction,

a

matter

of

fashion.

Prices

may

keep

going

up

they

ve

been

rising

for

15

years.

But when fashion

moves

on, the owner

of the

?350,000 beau

ty

will suddenly find his pride and joy is no more

a good investment than my childhood Timex.

24.

The sales of watches to young people have fallen because they__________.

A. have other devices to tell the time

C. prefer to wear an iPod

25.

It seems ridiculous to the writer that__________.

A.

people dive 300 meters into the sea

B.

expensive clothes sell better than cheap ones

C.

cheap cars don

t run as fast as expensive ones

D.

expensive watches with unnecessary functions still sell

26.

What can be learnt about Swiss watch industry from the passage?

A.

It targets rich people as its potential customers

B.

It

s hard for the industry to beat its competitors

C.

It wastes a huge amount of money in advertising

D.

It

s easy for the industry to reinvent cheap watches

B. think watches too expensive

D. have no sense of time

C

“I moved him,” th

e old man said.

“I moved

him

then.” He

felt faint again now but he held on the

great fish

all the strength that he could. I moved him, he thought. Maybe this time I can get him over. Pull, hands,

he thought. Hold up, legs. Last for me, head. Last for me. Y

ou never went. This time I

’ll pull him ove

r.

But when he put all of his effort on, starting it well out before the fish came alongside and pulling

with all

his strength, the fish pulled part way over and then righted himself and swam away.

“Fish,” the

old man said. “

Fish, you are going to have to die anyway

. Do you have to kill me too?

That way nothing is accomplished, he thought. His mouth was too dry to speak but he could not reach

for

the water now. I must get him alongside this time, he thought. I am not good for many more turns. Yes, you

are, he told himself. Y

ou’re good for eve

r.

On the next turn, he nearly had him. But again the fish righted himself and swam slowly away. You

are

killing

me,

fish,

the

old

man

thought.

But

you

have

a

right

to.

Never

have

I

seen

a

greater,

or

more

beautiful,

or a calmer or more noble thing than you, brother. Come on and kill me. I do not care who kills who.

Now you are getting confused in the head, he thought. You must keep your head clear. Keep your head

clear and know how to suffer like a man. Or a fish, he thought.

“Clear up, head,” he said in a voice he could hardly

hear

. “Clear up.”

Twice more it was the same on the turns.

I do not know, the old man thought. He had been on the point of feeling himself go each time. I do not

know. But I will try it once more. He tried it once more and he felt himself going when he turned the fish.

The fish righted himself and swam off again slowly with the great tail heaving in the air.

I’ll

try it again, the old man promised, although his hands were mushy now and he could only see

well in

flashes. He tried it

again and

it was the

same.

So he thought, and he

felt himself

going before he started;

I will try it once again. The old man dropped the line and put his foot on it and lifted the harpoon (

) as high as he could and drove it down with all his strength, and more strength he had just summoned

(

召集

), into the fish

s

side just behind the great chest fin that rose high in the air to the altitude of the man

s chest. He

felt the iron go

in and he leaned on it and drove it further and then pushed all his weight after it.

Then the fish came alive, with his death in him, and rose high out of the water showing all his great

length

and width and all his power and his beauty. He seemed to hang in the air above the old man in the skiff.

Then he fell into the water with a crash that sent spray (

) over the old man and over all of the skiff.

28.

Why did the old man keep talking to himself while fighting against the fish?

A. To rescue himself from great pressure.

C. To prevent himself from feeling tired.

B. To remind himself of the hidden danger.

D. To give himself constant encouragement.

29.

Which of the following statements is true about the fisherman?

A.

The fisherman seemed to be playing a cat-and-mouse game with the fish.

B.

The fisherman showed respect for the fish in this fierce battle.

C.

The fisherman has been fighting with the fish for long, which made him anxious.

D.

The fisherman, experienced as he was in fishing, nearly got killed on several occasions.

30.

What can be inferred from the sentence “Fish,

you are going to have to die any

way”(Para. 3) ?

D

Why

should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching

something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions

and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.

Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move

from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of

a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic

tendency to expand wherever possible.

Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding

areas

can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With

knowledge, we can lessen its effects.

Exploration

also

allows

minerals

and

other

potential

resources

to

be

found.

Even

if

we

have

no

immediate

need

of

them,

they

will

perhaps

be

useful

later.

Resources

may

be

more

than

physical

possessions.

Knowledge

or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which

can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other

spin- offs

including

improvements

in

earthquake

prediction,

in

satellites

for

weather

forecasting

and

in

communications

systems.

Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (

副产品

) of technological developments in

the

space industry!

While many

resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative,

brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold

many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The

danger

exists,

but

knowledge

can

help

human

beings

to

survive.

Without

the

ability

to

reach

out

across

space,

the chance to save ourselves might not exist.

While

Earth

is

the

only

planet

known

to

support

life,

surely

the

adaptive

ability

of

humans

would

allow

us

to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life cultures have

adapted in the past and surely could in the future.

32.

What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2?

A. Humans are nature-born to do so.

C. Humans may find new sources of food.

B. Humans have the tendency to fight.

D. Humans don

t like to stay in the same place.

33.

The underlined word “spin

-of

fs” in Paragraph 4 probab

ly refers to _______.

A. survival chances

C. unexpected benefits

B. potential resources

D. physical possessions

34.

What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?

A. Our genetic makeup

C. The adaptive ability of humans

B. Resources on the earth

D. By-products in space exploration

35.

Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?

A.

Space exploration has created many wonders.

B.

Space exploration provides the best value for money.
