Most people
need to hear those “three little words”
-- I love you. Sometimes they
hear them just in time.
I met Connie in the hospital where I
worked as a volunteer. Although Connie was in the
final stages of her fight against
cancer(
癌症
), she was
cheerful. I asked if she needed anything.
“Oh, yes,” she said, “would you please
show me how to use the TV? I enjoy the soaps.”
Connie
was a romantic. She loved soap
operas, and movies with a good love story. As we
became
familiar, she said how annoyed
it was to be married 32 years to a man who often
called her “a
silly woman.”
“I know Bill
loves me,” She said, “but he has never been one to
say he loves me. I’d give
anything if
he’d say ‘I love you,’ but
it’s just not in his
nature.”
Bill visited Connie every day. In the
beginning, he sat next to the bed while she
watched
the soaps. Soon, when she no
longer watched television and had fewer waking
moments, I

began spending more of my volunteer
time with Bill, who was a carpenter and made
furniture.
He and Connie had no
children, but they’d been enjoying retirement by
travelling, until Connie
got sick.
One day, over coffee I got him on the
subject of women and how we need romance in our
lives; how we love to get cards and
love letters.
“Do you tell Connie you love her?” I
asked, and he looked at me as if I was
crazy.
“I don't have to,” he said, “She knows
I do!”
“I'm sure she knows,” I said, “but she
needs to hear what she has meant to you all the
years.”
Two days later, I saw Bill
leaning up against the wall in the hallway and
staring at the floor.
The head nurse
told me Connie had died at 11 a.m..When Bill saw
me, his face was wet with
tears.
Finally, he took a deep breath. “I have to say how
good I feel about telling her.” He
stopped to blow his nose. “I thought a
lot about what you said, and this morning I told
her how
much I loved her…and loved
being married to her. You should have seen her
smile!”
I went into the room
to say my own good-bye to Connie. There, on the
bedside table, was
a large Valentine
card from Bill. “To my wonderful wife…I love
you!”

While reading,

A

C

and exciting.
When we see
babies or pets, we can't help gently touching them
to show our love.
And they give us
happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that
it’s different for plants.
A
study, published in The Plant Journal,
shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s
because touching changes their
genes(
基因
) and, even worse,
can slow their growth. Professor
Jim
Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The
lightest touch from a human, animal, insect,
or even plants touching each other in
the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the
plant.
In order to test the theory, the
scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew
a number
of plants to the age of four
weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush
every 12 hours
over a 36-hour period.
They found that as the result of the touch, the
mitochondria(
线粒体
) in
the plants had been partly destroyed.
The mitochondria are the
“power
-
house” of the
cell(
细胞
).
The
mitochondria produce energy
for the
cells in both animals and plants. If this
“power
-
house”
is
weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of
energy that should have supported their
growth.
Whelan further
explained, “If the touching is repeated, then
plant growth is reduced by 30
p
ercent.” Although the
touching does have a strong influence on plants,
usually the plants can
still be alive.
Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a
bad change. Continually
touching or
moving plants will make them grow shorter than
other ones. However, in some
ways, this
change could be helpful. It may help plants fight
threats to their health such as insects
and bad weather.
The new
research findings have led to a deeper
understanding of the plants. And the
research might help with the growth of
plants.

Wow, John! Your room is so
tidy. What’s up?
M:
I cleaned it just now. My
teacher, Miss Li, will visit our home this
evening.
W:
What? You didn’t tell me that. Were you
late for school again?
M:
Er... Mom, actually I slept
in the history class.
W:
You slept in class? How could you do
that?
M:
Miss Li
always tells many ancient stories in her class.
You know, I fall asleep quickly when I

W:
Are you trying to make a
fool of me? Tell me the truth, John.

gone to bed earlier last night, but the TV

Attention, please!
Our dear
teacher, Laura Green, will leave for America next
week. We are going to have a farewell
party for her to thank her for giving
us interesting classes. We really learned a lot
from her. The party
will be on Friday
afternoon in our classroom because we will have an
important exam on Thursday.
We must
prepare for it first. Just let me know if you can
prepare some food and drinks or games for
the party. Because it is a surprise
party, we also need someone to take Miss Green to
the classroom
without letting her know
about it. The party will start at three o’clock in
the afternoon, so you can
arrive at
five to three. Come on! Let's enjoy a wonderful
party and just show us what you can.

W.
Oh, hi! What are you doing
with the camera?
M:
Could you let me take a picture of you?
W:
Right here in
the kitchen? You must be joking!
M:
Please, it's for my
photography class.
W:
Why don't you just take a picture of
our house?
M:
I
can’t. Our homework this week is to take pictures
of our family.
W.
But honey, I’m cooking
now.
M:
The pictures are supposed to be
natural, so you don’t need to stop.
W:
All right.
When did you start your photography class?
M:
Last month,
and I go there every Tuesday and Thursday.
W:
You also have
a dancing class on Friday, don’t you?
M:
I used to,
but now I’m taking a tennis class
instead.
W:
I'm good at tennis. Maybe we can play
it together sometime.
M:
Sure. And I'm all done. Would you like
to see the pictures?
W:
Let me see... Wow, these pictures look
amazing. Good job!
