28-year
old
woman
has
recently
become
known
and
recognized
for
her
battling
with
cancer.
After
being
diagnosed
with
breast
cancer,
the
woman,
Zhou
Lin,
stayed
strong
by
recording
her
experiences
in
a
diary.
After
the
diary
was
posted
online,
her
story
touched many
netizens(
网民
).
In
late
June
of
last
year,
Zhou
was
diagnosed
with
breast
cancer
by
a
local
hospital.
Soon after, she lost both her job and
her love: her boyfriend broke up with her the
month after her diagnosis. As an
unmarried woman, it was hard to adjust herself to
the
mastectomy(
乳房切除术
)
of
her
right
breast
at
the
end
of
July.
However,
for
Zhou,
the chance to live
always came first.
Subsequent
treatments
were
also
torture
for
Zhou.
After
six
rounds
of
chemotherapy
and 25 rounds
of radiotherapy, the skin on her neck began to
come off. In addition,
Zhou
’
s family
spent about 200,000 yuan on the treatment, half of
which had to be
borrowed from
relatives.
Even so, the tough young
woman was not beaten by the economic burden, nor
did she
remain
in
despair
after
her
relationship
ended.
On
the
ninth
day
after
her
mastectomy,
she chose to
share her experience with cancer on social media,
and decided to keep
a diary to record
her bitter experience.
She wrote in
her diary:
“
Even though I
can still feel pain after the operation,
everything
is
going
to
get
better.
This
is
the
best.
I
feel
grateful
for
my
parents
’
care.
”
Her diary
was later posted online by friends. Within three
days, it had been
read tens of
thousands of times. Many people have been touched
by Zhou
’
s optimism,
saying that she deserves many good
things after going through such a tragedy.

When you watch TV programs about wild
animals, it is surprising to see how an
antelope(
羚羊
)
can
escape
a
lion
’
s
attack.
In
the
wilderness,
everyone
has
a
stunt(
绝
技
) . Even plants have
their own ways of fighting off enemies.
Over
millions
of
years
of
evolution,
plants
have
developed
a
unique
defence
system.
Chemicals are widely
used for survival. By making their leaves,
flowers, roots and
fruits distasteful
or poisonous to enemies, plants can fight back.
One
such
plant
is
the
Golden
Wattle
tree,
British
scientist
David
Caneron
has
found
when an animal eats
the tree
’
s leaves, the
amount of poison increases in the other
leaves.
“
It
’
s
like
the
damaged
leaves
telephoning
the
others
telling
them
to
fight
together against the
enemy,
”
he said.
The
tree
also
sends
defence
messages
to
neighboring
plants
by
giving
out
a
special
smell.
Golden Wattle trees in the surrounding 45 metres
will get the message and
produce more
poison within 10 minutes. Now, if an enemy eats
too many of the trees
’
leaves, it will die.
Every
species of plants or tree is good at the
production of a particular set of
chemicals. A herbivore that can safely
eat the leaves of one tree may be poisoned
by its neighbor.
In this
way, plants have developed not only individual
defence system, but also
shared it with
others. This makes it impossible for a single
animal to destroy even
a small area of
forest.
24. Which of the following can
be the best title of the passage?
A.
Plants Fight
Back With Poisons
B.
Plants Can Kill Animals
C.
Animals and
Plants
D.
Lions
and Antelopes
25. According to the
study, if one Golden Wattle tree is attacked by
animals, it can
______________.
A.
Tell other
trees to protect it
B.
Produce more poison within 10 minutes
C.
Send defence
messages to the neighboring plants
D.
Kill the
animal with its leaves

My
father
was
always
a
good
gardener.
One
of
my
earliest
memories
is
standing
without
shoes in the freshly
tilled(
翻耕的
) soil, my hands
blackened from digging in the
ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad
around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the
tiller(
耕作机
) ahead
in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all
sorts of
things:
yellow
and
green
onions,
watermelons
almost
as
big
as
me,
rows
of
yellow
corn,
and
our favorite--- red tomatoes.
As
I
grew
into
a
teenager,
I
didn’t
get
so
excited
about
gardening
with
Dad.
Instead
of
magical land of possibility, it had turned into
some kind of prison. As Dad grew
older,
his love for gardening never disappeared. After
all the kids were grown and
had started
families of their own, Dad turned to gardening
like never before. Even
when he was
diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his
garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by
bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he
used
to do. What really convinced me
that Dad was dying was the state of his garden
that
year.
The
rows
and
rows
of
multicolored
vegetables
were
gone.
Too
tired
to
weed
them,
he simply let them be. He only planted
tomatoes.
For the first few years after
he died, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s
garden without having strong memories
pour over me like cold water from a bucket.
Three years ago, I decided to plant my
own garden and started out with just a few
tomatoes. That morning, after breaking
up a fair amount of soil, something caught
the
corner
of
my
eye
and
I
had
to
smile.
It
was
my
eight-year-old
son
Nathan,
happily
playing in the
freshly tilled soil.
28. Why did the
author like the garden when he was a child?
A. He wanted
to be a garden-crazy like his father.
B. The garden was just
freshly tilled
C. The garden was full of his favorite food.
D. He loved
being in the garden with his father.
29. When all the kids started their own
families, the author’
s father _____.
A. stopped his gardening
B. turned to other hobbies
C. devoted more to
gardening
D. focused on
planting tomatoes
30. What happened to
the garden when the author’s father was seriously
ill?
