Passage 5
Many
people believe they are supposed to drink eight
glasses of water a day, or about two liters. Why?
Because that is
what they have been
told all their life. But a new report offers some
different advice. Experts say people should obey
their
bodies;
they should drink as much water as they
feel like drinking.
The report says
most healthy people meet their daily needs for
liquid by letting thirst be their guide. The
report is from
the Institute of
Medicine, part of the National Academies. This
organization provides scientific and technical
advice to the
government and the
public.
The report contains some
general suggestions. The experts say women should
get about two-point-seven liters of water
daily. Men should get about three-
point-seven liters. But
wait
—
in each case that is
more than eight glasses.
There is an
important difference. The report does not tell
people how many glasses of water to drink. In
fact, the experts
say it may be
impossible to know how many glasses are needed to
meet these guidelines
(
指导方针
). This is because the
daily
water requirement can include the
water content in foods. People do not get water
only by forcing themselves to drink a set
number of glasses per day. People also
drink fruit juices and sodas and milk. They drink
coffee and tea. These all contain water.
As you might expect, the Institute of
Medicine says people need to drink more water when
they are physically active. The
same is
true of those who live in hot climates.
Spending on
heat and activity, people could need two times as
much water as
others do.

Passage
7
Some of the notebooks George Washington
kept as a young man are still in existence. They
show that he was learning
Latin, was
very interested in the basics of good behavior in
society, and was reading English literature.
At school he seems only to have been
interested in mathematics. In fact, his formal
education was surprisingly brief for a
gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike
other young Virginians of that day, he did not go
to the College of William and Mary in
the Virginian capital of Williamsburg.
In terms of formal training then, Washington
contrasts sharply with some other early
American Presidents such as John Adams,
Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later
years, Washington probably regretted
his lack of intellectual training. He
never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress, or
on any subject that had not to do with
everyday, practical matters. And
because he never learned French and could not
speak directly to the French leaders, he did not
visit the country he admired so much.
Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams, he never reached
Europe.
1. Why didn?t
Washington go to college
?
A. His family
could not afford it .
B. A college education was rather
uncommon in his time.
C. He didn?t like the young
Virginian gentlemen.
D.
The author doesn?t give any
reason.
2.
Washington felt uncomfortable in Congress debates
because he
.
A. lacked
practice in public speaking.
B. felt his education was
not good enough
C. didn?t like arguing and debating
with people.
D. felt that debating was like
intellectual training.
3.
The reason why Washington didn?t visit
Fran
ce was probably that he
.
A. didn?t really care about
going
B. didn't know French
leaders
C. couldn?t communicate
directly with the French leaders
D.
was too busy to travel
4. According to the author
.
A.
Washington?s lack o
f formal education
placed him at a disadvantage in later
life
B.
Washington should have gone to France even though
he could not speak French
C. Washington was not as good a
president as Adams, Jefferson or Madison
D. Washington was a model
for all Virginian gentlemen.
5. The
main idea of the passage is that Washington?s
education
.
A. was of
great variety, covering many subjects
B. was probably
equal to those of most young gentlemen of his time
C. may seem poor by modern

Man has always wanted to

In the
sixteenth century he made designs for machines
that would fly, but they were never built.
Throughout history, other less famous
men had wanted to fly. An example was a man in
England 800 years ago. He made
a pair
of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them
to his body and jumped into air from a tall
building. He did not fly
very far.
Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every
bone in his body.
The first real steps took
place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, the

very
large “hot air balloon”. They knew that hot air
rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The balloon
was made of cloth and
paper.
In September of that year, the King and Queen of
France came to see the balloon. They watched it
carry the very first air
passengers
into the sky. The passengers were a sheep and a
chicken. We do not know how they felt about the
trip. But we do
know that the trip
lasted eight minutes and that the animals landed
safely. Two months later, two men did the same
thing. They
rose above Paris in a
balloon of the same kind. Their trip lasted
twenty-five minutes and they traveled about.

but at the present time, fifty percent of American

Passage 10
How
men first learn to invent words is unknown; in
other words, the origin of language is a mystery.
All we know is
that men, unlike
animals, somehow invented certain sounds to
express thoughts and feelings, actions and things,
so that they
could communicate with
each other; and that later they agreed upon
certain signs, called letters, which could be
combined to
represent those sounds, and
which could be written down. Those sounds, whether
spoken, or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then,
lies in their
associations(
联想
)---the
things they bring up before our minds. Words
become
filled with meaning for us by
experience, and the longer we live, the more
certain words recall to us the glad and sad
events
of
our past; and the
more we read and learn, the more the number of
words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who
not only have great thoughts but also express
these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully
to our minds and emotions. This
charming and telling
(
生动的
)use of words is what we
call literary style. Above all, the real
poet is a master of words. He can
convey his meaning in words which sing like music,
and which by their position and
association can move men to tears. We
should therefore learn to choose our words
carefully and use them accurately, or they
will make our speech silly and vulgar
(
粗俗的
,
庸俗的
).

3. What is true about the words?
A. They are meaningful sounds that
