BUTTERFL
Y
DREAM
was
originally
called
REBECCA.
It
was
written by
an English female novelist, biographer and
playwright Daphne
Du Maurier, and
published had been translated into 20 kinds of
languages
and
reprinted
more
than
40
times.
It
was
filmed
by
Alfred
Hitchcock in 1940 and always won
acclaim to the present day.
In
Monte
Carlo
,
the
heroine
,
a
paid
companion
of
a
rich
and
snobbish woman, came across Maxim,
owner of the grand English estate ,
Manderley . They fell in love and got
married, though it
?
s a deal
at first.
But
when they came
back to
Manderley, the bride felt
Maxim
?
s former
wife Rebecca had always existed in
their
house, and marriage.
Even the
house keeper .Mrs.
Danvers, who was a crazy fan of
Rebecca, had keep
Rebecca
?
s room as
it once had been. Mrs.
Dauvers always
put on more
pressure
to
this
marriage
and
tried
to
drive
the
bride
away
from
Manderley. With time
gone,
“I”, knowing
that
Rebecca was a beautiful,
sophisticated,
and supremely confident
woman, had
suffered from great
inferiority
and
lived
painfully
in
the
presence
of
Rebecca
?
s spirit.
She
eventually
learned that Maxim did not love
Rebecca, a
cruel, egoistical
woman. Rebecca failed finally, in
ruining her husband
?
s life
.Maxim and
“
I
”
also lost Manderley, which was ruled by Rebecca
.Finally Manderley
had gone with a
mysterious fire after Mrs.
Danver
?
s resignation.
It
?
s
a
thriller,
suspense
novel
which
was
the
represent
of
Daphne.
Most of her works
were romantic suspense novels which were set on
the
coast
of
Cornwall
where
she
sailed,
walked,
and
lived.
So,
they
were
called Cornwall Novels.
Her novels focused on the characterization and
plot and had strong dramatic
properties. In the novel, the plot was
also
around the
heroine
?
s love story
and told by the
heroine.
Daphne usually
adapted the Gothic
structure to develop the
plot which was
twisted and
unexpected.
Besides, its characterization was
successful. There were two different
characters, the heroine and Rebecca.
Rebecca
was
the
key
of
the
novel .She
was
always
controlled
and
affected
those
people
who
lived
in
Manderley.
She
likes
a
shadow
covered over the Manderley. The
character was complicated and mature.
She never shows up; she was said to be
very beautiful but there
was not
the least description of her except
that she was tall with long black hair;
she had been died for 10 months when
the story began, but seems to be
everywhere since the heroine and her
husband?s first met when Mrs. V
an
Hopper said,
” h
e
can?t get over his wife?s death”. After
the couple was
at
home, the
bride felt that Rebecca was like a spook,
wandering in her life
and making her
miserable.
It
seems
that
Maxim
was
always
thinking
about
Rebecca,
whom
everyone loved, who
died in a boating accident just a year before,
whose
handkerchief was still left in
the raincoat, and whose hand-writing could
