Due Attention Should Be Given to Speaking
Nowadays fewer and fewer students pay attention to
their spoken English, which results in a dramatic
increase in the number of students who can spell English words but are incapable of speaking them
fluently or correctly. This phenomenon has aroused many people's attention.
Why does such a phenomenon emerge?
As far as I'm concerned
, there are possibly two reasons
contributing to this phenomenon.
On the one hand,
exam-oriented education makes many schools lay
emphasis on passing the English exams, which leads to the lack of speaking environment for students to
practice their spoken English.
On the other hand
, students themselves don't realize the importance of the
ability to speak English which has a great influence on their future study and career development.
To change this situation
, I think we can take the following measures. First, the importance of oral English
should be emphasized to raise students' awareness of the necessity of speaking English. Second,
exams should be modified to make students pay attention to their spoken English. Third, schools can
organize various activities to arouse students' interest in speaking English.

Attending school abroad has many advantages. In the first place, by looking at our own country from the
outside, we can best see the strong points of our nation, and therefore widen our vision and broaden our
minds. Secondly, while studying in a foreign country, we can travel widely, visiting famous scenic spots
and making friends with the local people. Thirdly, we can use the foreign language in our daily life so that
our ability in the second language may be improved quickly. But the most important thing in attending a
foreign university is to get acquainted with the latest knowledge in science and technology and make use
of the first-rate facilities available. For all these advantages, it is really worthwhile to go abroad for further
studies.
However, as everything has two sides, there are also some disadvantages in attending a foreign
university. The most serious problem is the language barrier. Most of the students who are ready to go
abroad do not have adequate proficiency in the language spoken there. As a result, on arriving there,
they will find it difficult to understand what the instructors are saying. Besides, for lack of knowledge of
the customs and way of life of the local people, they may constantly run into trouble in dealing with
various situations. Therefore, misunderstandings often arise. Furthermore, the cost of living is much
higher than that in our country, so most students have to find part-time jobs in order to help support
themselves. Faced with these difficulties, many students find themselves unable to pay full attention to
their studies and some students may even fail in their courses and learn little, even some have to return
to their motherland.
Therefore, given an opportunity to attend school abroad, one must consider both sides of the factors
carefully before making up his mind. On the whole, it is good to go and study abroad particularly when
the subject is very weak or not available in our country. But on the other hand, one must not lose sight of
the disadvantages.

Lectures and Discussions

There is a heated debate over the role of lectures and discussions in the classroom. Some people
believe that lectures can help students learn more quickly. In contrast, others hold that
discussions can stimulate students to learn by themselves.

Those who hold the first opinion suggest that students attend more lectures. In their view, by
giving lectures teachers help students master the knowledge they've accumulated over years of
study and research. However, others think that in a discussion, the teacher usually guides the

In my opinion, I stand on the side of neither idea. First of all, either method has its disadvantages.
Furthermore, each student has his or her preference. Thirdly, lectures ate preferable to
discussions in the teaching of science subjects, and on the contrary, discussions are preferable to
lectures in studying the humanities. Therefore, we should adopt different teaching methods
according to different subjects.
