Appreciate What You Have
It seems that people tend to shed tears
for what they have lost but turn a poker face at
what
they
are
still
holding
tightly
in
hand.
How
much
sorrow
would
vanish
if
people
could
learn
to
appreciate what they have!
Here is a story I heard once. A
successful artist was being interviewed. Suffering
from a rare
disease, the young woman
had to stay in a wheelchair and wasn’t able to
speak. The interview went
on smoothly
until a journalist asked: “As a seriously
disabled
,
·
miserable person
,
why are the
teachers cheerful?” The room fell into
an embarrassed silence, but the woman didn’t seem
to care.
Picking up a piece of chalk
with her swollen hand
,
she started writing on the blackboard. The words
were ugly but still powerful: “I am
happy to have a pair of beautiful legs.” “I feel
great to wake up
with sunshine through
my window.’’ “I am glad to have a healthy brain to
keep thinking and working.
“Most
important of all, I only care about what I have
instead of what I have lost.’’ All the journalists
present were deeply moved.
Had the artist always buried herself in
woe of losing, she wouldn’t have made any progress
and
been respected by healthy people.
Losing is usually evitable and unavoidable. So why
should we
lose heart for what we can’t
change? By the way, there is something that we can
hardly lose, such
as a bumping
heart
,
a movable hand
,
and the air around us, which we are used to turning a blind
eye to but
can never live without. Learn to treasure them,
and your life will be free of regrets and
misery.
Appreciate
what you have. Don’t let your smile fade for
anything that doesn’t belong to you.

Appreciate What You Have
I used to be grievous due to what I’ve
lost, the majority of people do, neglecting what
I’ve
already possessed. However, an
unexpected incident changed my point of view and
taught me to
appreciate what I
have
,
which I’ve benefited from.
When I was in Grade Eight,
I was a member of our school choir. Confident of
my sweet voice,
I was delighted to
enter for the singing competition.
Undoubtedly
,
I was applauded when I finished
my last high note, thus being
sure to win. However, the first prize didn’t
belong to me. Shocked and
grievous, I
couldn’t help but weep in a small voice. I lost
the first prize I’ve been dreaming of! Just
then, a handkerchief was passed in
front of me. I raised my head and saw my friend
Alice. “Cheer
up! You did perform well
to the audience, didn’t
you? You shouldn’t stick to what
you lost but
should appreciate what you have. You
got the second prize and importantly, you are
gifted with a
beautiful voice with
which you can succeed next time!” A warm smile and
words of comfort relieved
me of my
grief
,
and I was no longer in low spirits.
The incident left a
deep impression on me in that it taught me the
importance of appreciating
what I have.
Since life is full of difficulties, I can’t stick
to the grief of what I've lost. Only by
appreciating
what I have can I have a positive mind with which
to embrace my future life. Both the
incident and my friend’s words will be
cherished for good, reminding me to become
positive at my
life’s
crossroads.

You

the

Confidence
contributes
to
your
own
perspective and
individuality as well. You are who you are and
never should you doubt the path
you’ve
chosen for yourself.
As far as I
am concerned, your depression may be attributed to
two main reasons. For one
thing
,
a series of failures in
weekly tests struck you more than a bit, but
perhaps you were simply not in
good
condition due to the tiredness caused by
rehearsals for the school art festival. On the
other
hand
,
you might have been trapped by gossip about your poor performance. But this is your play
and
you can’t expect everyone to understand.
Just think of some happy and successful
moments and keep them in your mind when you are
in low spirits. Look into your papers
and try to make up for the defects. Besides, don’t
focus on
those past defeats as they’re
far from life or death problems.
I hope to see that energetic and
confident you soon and whatever happens, I will
always be by
your side.
Yours,
Wang

Dear Lin
Hua,
I
hear
that
you
have
met
some
difficulties
in
your
study

and
seemed
to
have
lost
confidence in yourself. As far as I am
concerned
,
confidence is the most important factor when you

success.
Not
only
can
self- confidence
motivate

but
also
it
enables one to keep trying to
solve difficult problems. Confidence is so vital
in one’s work and study
that without
it, one is likely to become a coward when faced
with difficulties, thus giving up the
chance to make progress; so, you should
rebuild your confidence.
Perhaps
it is the fact that you failed in the last exam
while your deskmate scored higher than
you that made you feel inferior to him
and became unconfident, but only one test doesn’t
mean
everything.
I
firmly
believe
that
you

as

and face difficulties bravely. Here, as your
friend, I’d like to give you some
suggestions.
First, you may as
well take more physical exercise, during which you
can remove your bad
mood, and build up
courage. Next, you should have correct attitude
towards exams, which I think
