阅读下列短文,从每题所给的
A

B

C

D
四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie, was a
rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie 's
place. We'd sit on the edge of the dock (
码头
)and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut
our
first
watermelon,
hand
us
both
a
big
piece
and
sit
down
next
to
us.
Then
we'd
bury
our
faces
in
watermelon, eating only the heart

the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, and most seed-free part

and
throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father's ideal of a rich man, I always thought it was because he was such a successful
businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie 's wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that
my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the
watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich
is a state of mind. Some of us, no
matter how
much
money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don't take the
time to enjoy life's small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the dock I was too busy making all the
money I could. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's

the heart of the watermelon.
I have learned again to throw the rest away.
31. We learn from the second paragraph the writer and his father were feeling _______.

32 .How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon?
A. They ate it in a polite way.

B. They only ate its best part.

4
C. They ate every part of it

D. They shared only one piece.
33. In the eyes of the writer's father, Bernie_______.
A. was just a rich businessman

B. worked hard all the time
C. lived a rich but healthy life

D. knew how to make money
34. The writer was too busy to________

A. make money

B. enjoy life's small pleasure

C. eat watermelon.

D. get together with friends
35.
The underlined part “the heart of the watermelon” in the last paragraph refers to _______.

A. the writer's hope of enjoying life

B. the writer's busy life
C. the writer's decision of making money

D. the best part of the watermelon

It is said that more than four million people die each year from smoking. That number is increasing.
Seven in ten of those deaths are in developing countries. These numbers are frightening.
Yet people around the world continue to smoke. The Great American Smokeout has been founded for
twenty- five years to show the dangers of smoking and provide support for people who decide to stop
smoking. The American Cancer Society says all cigarettes damage the body. It warns that smoking even a
small number of cigarettes is dangerous. It is not easy to give up smoking forever. However, doctors say
they probably will live longer if they do stop smoking. They will feel better and look better. They also will
protect the health of family members who breathe their smoke.
The American Cancer Society says there is not just one right way to stop smoking. Any useful way to
stop smoking is worth trying. They may take long walks or spend time in places where smoking is not
allowed. Also, they could eat a small piece of fruit instead of having a cigarette.
The American Cancer Society says the sooner smokers stop smoking, the more they can reduce their
chances of getting cancer and other diseases. It says blood pressure returns to normal twenty minutes after
smoking the last cigarette. Carbon monoxide (
一氧化碳
) gas levels in the blood return to normal after eight
hours. After one day, the chance of heart attack decreases. After one year, the risk of heart disease for a
non-smoker is half that of a smoker.
Stop smoking before smoking stops you!

Do you want
to know how and why a fall leaf changes color? We first have to understand what
leaves are and what they do.

Leaves
are
the
world’s
food
factories. Plants
take
water
from
the
ground
through
their
roots
and
take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(
葡萄糖
), a kind of sugar.
Plants use it as food for energy and growing.

A chemical called “
chlorophyll
” in the leaves gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and
autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” to begin getting r
eady for winter.

During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food
they
store
during
the
summer.
They
begin
to
shut
down
their
food-making
factories.
As
the
green
chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.

The
bright
reds
and
purples
we
see
in
leaves
are
made
mostly
in
autumn.
In
some
trees,
like
maples(
枫树
), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red colour. And
we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn.
should be in the box? Sunlight+(

)+CO2=glucose.

4

44. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. When autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter

B. During winter trees live on the food they store in summer

C. During winter some of yellow and orange colors are still in the leaves

D. Trees begin to stop making food in summer

are all kinds of plants on the earth
all the colors of the leaves are from chlorophyll
leaves change the color as other trees
D
If you want to learn English well. You have to practice speaking English! Use these sentences to help you
start interesting conversations in English.
___46__. We should try to do things independently(
独立的
), rather than wait for help. Do you think our
school stop us from thinking independently? How can we become more independent? Can we help our
classmates to be more independent? How?
___47__. I find this to be true with my student. If they only recite without understanding, they cannot use
English well. Have you ever tried to recite many English words? What is the result? Do you know some
people that only follow but never think? What is that person like? Do you know anyone who is a clear
thinker? What is that person like?
