Aesop’s Fables

The Wolf and the Lamb

Once upon a time a Wolf was lapping at a spring on a hillside, when,
looking up, what should he see but a Lamb just beginning to drink a l
ittle lower down. ‘There’s my supper,’ thought he, ‘if only I can
find
some excuse to seize it.’
Then he called out to the Lamb,
‘How
dare you muddle the water from which I am drinking?’

‘Nay, master, nay,’
said Lambikin;
‘if the water be muddy up there,

I cannot be the cause of it, for it runs down from you to me.’

‘Well, then,’ said the Wolf, ‘why did you call me bad names this t
ime last year?’

‘That cannot be,’ said the Lamb; ‘I am only six months old.’

‘I don’t care,’ snarled the Wolf; ‘if it was not you it was your
father;’ and with that he rushed upon the poo
r little Lamb and .WARR
A WARRA WARRA WARRA WARRA .ate her all up. But before she died she ga
sped out .’Any excuse will serve a tyrant.’

The

answered,

I
could
see

once,
I

The

time,
and
the

out
to
the
path
which
the

used
every
day.
First
an
old
discharged
soldier
came
by.

that

asked
the
wolf.

answered
the
fox.

has
been
one.

Afterwards
came
a

on
his

to

that
a

he

Finally
a

on
his

and
a

at
his

The
fox
said
to
the
wolf,

there
comes
a

He
is
the
one
you

but
I
am
going

to

The
wolf
then
charged
at
the
man.

When
the
huntsman
saw
him
he
said,

I

with

Then
he
aimed
and
fired
a
load
of
shot
into
his
face.

The
wolf
pulled
an
awful
face,
but
did
not
let
himself
be
frightened,
and
attack

him
again,
on
which
the
huntsman
gave
him
the

The
wolf

his

and
charged
at
the
huntsman
again,
who
in
turn
drew
out
his
naked
sword,
and
gave
him
a
few
blows
with
it
left
and
right,
so
that,
bleeding
all
over,
he
ran
howling
back
to
the
fox.

Brother
Wolf,
said
the
fox,

did
you
get
along
with
man?

replied
the
wolf,

never
imagined
the
strength
of
man
to
be
what
it
is.

First,
he
took
a
stick
from
his
shoulder,
and
blew
into
it,
and
then
something
flew

into
my
face
which
tickled
me
terribly.
Then
he
breathed
once
more
into
the
stick,

and
it
flew
up
my
nose
like
lightning
and
hail.
Then
when
I
got
next
to
him,
he
drew
a
naked
rib
out
of
his
body,
and
he
beat
me
so
with
it
that
he
almost
killed
me.

said
the
fox.
